Subj: Hello!!
Date: 97-05-11
From: geddes@mcb.net (R.Geddes)
Must join in the "de - lurking", though I don't reckon 36yrs of
fanaticism is "lurking" at all. (Hope this actually reaches bloodlines).
My name is Rod Geddes and I live in the Isle of Man,British Isles.
I have been a follower of J.S. since 1961,when a bloke in a record shop
in Manchester persuaded me to buy "Come Along Julie" when I went in for
a Trio record. "Listen to this voice" he said, as the "Listen to the
robin" verse came up...that was it!! Then he joined my favourite group!!
Over the years I,ve met up with a lot of other J.S. fanatics..you are
either hot or cold about the man and his music, seen him a few times
over here, bought everything I could get my hands on from various
sources and collected concert tapes and unreleased material from all
over!! I have quite a collection now. My one regret..never being able
to find a copy of "Rocking Anna" or the "Daydream Believer/ Do you
have a place I can Hide?/ Leaving on a Jet Plane" demo with John
Denver.Favourite John Stewart songs, "Dreamers on the Rise", "Under
Heavy Fire", "Rivers of Light", "Angel Delgadillo", "Eyes of Sweet
Virginia",etc etc.
Soon as I went on the Web, the first Search was..well, here I am, so
you guessed it.
Looking forward to joining in the conversations with everyone.
By the way...NO...John isn't country..he's unique!!
Rod Geddes.

Here's my crow with garlic and lemon, as Roy put it in his memo to Dave,
who I never for one minute wanted to leave: I never meant "good rats"
or "bad rats".
Who am I to say that? And I am too new to bloodlines to make such a call
anyway, even if I thought I were perfect enough to make such a judgement.
All I originally meant to do was let John Stewart know that, from what I
knew of him (over 25 years of listening to his songs), and the way he does
things now, plus the way this group has seemed in these bloodlines, not too
many people would hesitate to respond to his call for HELP for the animals
being hurt at Berkeley by Dr. DeValois (correct my spelling if it's wrong?) -
And I DID get too strong and hot under the collar about it - sorory if I
worded my thoughts in a clumsy or tactless way - KShep87309

Subj: The Murder Weapon
Date: 97-05-11
From: WardHorde@aol.com
As I catch up on several days of mail, and the many "shooting from the hip"
comments, I am reminded of T-Bone Burnett's song "The Murder Weapon." In the
song, the murder weapon is our tongues. Perhaps we should remember that
shooting from the hip or the lip is not the wisest thing and take the time to
compose our thoughts rather than spitting each one out like a gumball
machine, straight from the brain to the tongue.

I hope everyone had the opportunity to watch the very endearing Rugrats

And last but not least, after reading all the comments about the

I don't recall if it was my Mom or Dad.... "Caution: put brain in

Hope all you mothers had a pleasant day...

Subj: Circling back. . .
Date: 97-05-12
From: RGodwin495@aol.com
As deep as I'm into Bloodlines, as many of us are, I also monitor Guy
Clark's list, 'tho not nearly as much. With everything that has been going
on the past ten days on *our* list, there's been similar, although less
intense, discussion and dialogue over on GC and Friends. One particular
thread relates to "do we talk only about Guy Clark or do we allow
conversations about other artists". Some of it has led to a questioning of
netiquette on that list. . echoes of many recent voices we have all heard
here!
In light of the above, (and that thread is used only to tie in to the
following snip) I just thought it was quite interesting. . .and
coincidental. . .that I came across the following post tonite on Clark's
discussion board.
The moral to *all of this*. . .both here and on 'GC Friends' list. . .
perhaps lies within the last line.
<< Hmmmm (again), I don't want to start another dialogue regarding the do's
and don'ts of mail-list etiquette! I was just illustrating the "loose"
and "tight" interpretations of "Guy Clark Friends".
Far be it for me to "censor" or "police" anybody, that's up to the desire
of the list. I too enjoy hearing about other artists. It was through
this list that I received early reports about the deaths of Faron Young
and Townes, and a late report about the death of Gambol Rogers-- all
favorites of mine. As well as an update about what Jessie Winchester's
been up to.
We all have to know when to circle back. Have fun.

>>
So. . .is it time for us, too, to start circling back?

Subj: Nanci Plays John
Date: 97-05-12
From: tae69@dial.pipex.com (Mark Austin)
Went to see Nanci Griffith in London last night. A very suprising
lady. Bit of a closet rocker really.
Anyway, as mentioned previously, John was included on the pre show
tapes. Last but one before the opening we got Shadows of the Angels
Wings and as a bonus, during the interval, Daydream Believer.
Both these were off Airdream Believer and I note both tracks actually
feature Nanci!
She also confirmed that Other Voices 2 is recorded and will be out next
year. So I guess we will get to hear that version of Deportee which
I am particularly looking forward to as Steve Earle is another major
fave of mine.

John is playing in Williams, AZ.......wow....I knew I should have
taken that job with the Grand Canyon Railroad there.
So...Nancy, just how are you going to be able to cope with not one
but THREE JS concerts within 2 hours of Prescott? (Scottsburg, Flag,
Williams). Wow (again). I'm gonna have to catch that one in
Flagstaff.
Hope to see you all there.

Dearest Stewartistas...
I received this post from a former Bloodlines member who would have been

Unfortunately he picked the wrong two days to sample what we have to offer.

No, Shep; I can barely handle life, so I don't drink or do drugs. Was
your message a concern for my health, an invitation, or a commentary on
my style of writing? If the former, thanks, I'm doing fine. If the
second, see my first line. If the later, ah, well, sorry 'bout that.

Subj: our Man in the Midwest: a plea for help
Date: 97-05-12
From: jalderson@journals.uchicago.edu
Dear Minnesotan Bloodliners: Luke, Dennis, and Fred in St Paul if you're
still there, and any others I've missed,
I have a brother-in-law, David Alderson, who's house manager at the Cedar
Cultural Center, 416 Cedar Avenue, (612) 338-2674 in Mpls, which is, btw,
<<shameless plug follows>> a terrific place to hear folk music and
lesser-known acts from all over the world.
Now, I've been trying to hook up Spitbucket and David to arrange a gig for
JS in the pre-or post-Bayfield WI timespan, but for some reason Spitbucket
is dragging his feet. This is becoming more urgent because it looks like the
Cedar will have to shut down for a couple months this summer due to lack of
interest in indoor concerts during the extremely short MN summer. So if there
is to be a JS concert there, we'll have to express a strong advance interest.
I personally will guarantee 2-4 people from Chgo and possibly 2 more from Madison
and several from the Twins if JS shows. If you folks know of people who would be
interested in seeing our Man play, please let the Cedar know. And plague
Spitbucket like boils, I mean, David is one of the family of Stewartistas I
married into, has been a fan for at least 25 years, is house manager at a folk
club, if HE can't book a gig I don't know what!
Thanks for your help; if I don't see John and "Dave" this summer my little heart
will crack!

only an email away from JS fans. Isle of Man? What's summer like there?

Its very warm and sunny up here,in the north of the Island, David. We are
in the middle of the Irish Sea. Its a bit parky (sorry, that means
cold!!) in winter though, as there is nothing between us and Iceland,
where the winter winds come from!!
Only trouble is that I am off the beaten track now, as far as John's
concerts go..but that won't stop me seeing him. As you say, I am only an
E-mail away from JS fans everywhere! Very glad I found "Bloodlines",
(thanks Michelle!!)
Looking forward to many happy years here!!

Michelle,
Your right, too bad. But I've got to tell the truth, not everything always
interests me either - that's part of the human condition. But, maybe I can
learn something (even if I don't want to) from the things I'm 'not interested in'.
Our friend should have been a little more patient.
FYI Phoenix Xerox will be in the mail in about 2-3 days - if you don't get
yours before moving and Post Office efficiency loses it, let me know.

Well (lest I be labeled cliche) necessity is the mother of invention (or
maybe just getting off one's butt) I was going to wait until after I moved,
but I was just too disturbed by all that has developed over the last two
weeks.
I have made application for the digest version of this list. If approved it
should be up and running by this time next week. If you'd like to switch
from "Bloodlines" to "Bloodlines-digest" ASAP, e-mail me (PRIVATELY at
ddunet@concentric.net) and you'll switched at the first opportunity.
I won't be publicizing the digest version of this list on the web site just
yet. But I will be issuing announcements about this periodically, as we
gain new members. That doesn't mean I want y'all to switch to digest. I'd
like to digest to comprise of people who would most likely otherwise leave
us if it weren't for the existence of this alternative, but I'll leave that
decision up to you.
