Subj:	Brief Intro/Davis Concert

From:	joehler@afes.com

How ya doing guys,
My name is James and I am a 18 year old (youngest on the
list?:-) northern California kid, that discovered Mr. Stewart's music
about a year ago, when my dad was listening to one of John's old
albums, California Bloodlines .. Have been hooked ever since. I
don't know why but nobody at school has heard of John Stewart. :-)
And it's even harder to get them to listen to it. :-) But I enjoy
listening to his music with my parents. I have been on this list ever
since it started way back when , haven't really written anything,
but I and my parents have enjoyed your many posts. Yes I'm anothrer
lurker coming out of the woodworks (is that the saying, I'm to young
to remember it :-) . But I know there is about 100 more lurkers
out there, why don't you come out. :-) The reason I'm a unlurking for
now, is because of the John Stewart concert in Davis, CA last
night.
The show was great, John started off the show by asking the
audience if any of them belonged to the Internet mailing list,
bloodlines, I waved my hand thinking I was one of many but turns out
I was the only one in a crowd of about 50.. Then John asked me what
my screen name was, well since I never wrote anything to this list, I
knew he wouldn't recognize my screen name, so now I am writing to
prove I exist! :-) Anyways, back to the concert, I didn;t keep a set
list but he played a lot of the classics and some Rough Sketches song
.. along with a the Black Sky shining song.. great song by the way..
also with a song I have never heard "cowboys in the distance" was
said throughout the song..what song is it? He introduced his Daydream
Believer song by saying that it was his favorite Bob Dylan song .. He
also did a great version of the Kentucky Derby song Let 'em run.. He
also got out the ole banjo, and boy did it sound good... And he ended
the show with a REALLY good version of "maria" .. So as usual Mr and
Mrs Stewart, and Dave Batti did a good job.. Hey john you never did
play "Armstrong"! :-) Just kidding..

I hope that John is going on that Route 66 trip because I
have just finished restoring a 1963 Ford Galaxie, my dad
finished a 1966 Ford Mustang, and my brother has a 1963
Chevy Impala, that would really love to get their tires back
on the neon road! What's the word, Mr. Stewart?

anyways, that's about all for now.. maybe I'll
write more later.

Regards,

"Straight Edge" James

Subj:	John Stewart on Norwegian national radio (NRK)
Date:	97-05-04
From:	svein-rm@netpower.no (Svein Reidar Myklebust)

Hello Stewardistas!
This night in a program called "Pusterommet" (A space to breath) John
Stewart was the songwriter of the the week. It starts at 5 minutes past
midnight and last until 1 o'clock.
His songs was presented in some 20 minutes in 54 minute long programe.

These sangs was played.

The Monkees Daydream Believer
J.S. Dreamers On the Rise
Kingstone Trio Greenback Dollar
J.S. The Reverend Mr. Black
Rosanne Cash Dance With A Tiger
Lobo Armstrong
J.S. Daydream Believer

The presentation was based on the presenters lack of knowledge of this to
him an unknown singer, but he said nothing wrong. He had either searched on
Internet or read the biography in Guiness Encylopedia Of Popular Music.
It is surprising because as far as I know any kind of presentation of John
is scarce on Norwegian radio, but this program deals espcilly in
singer/songwriters so I will send E-mail try to persuade the presenter to
play more of John's songs.

yours truly
Svein Reidar Myklebust

Subj:	Phoenix lurker
Date:	97-05-04
From:	doghelp@primenet.com (Bill Rayner)

As a part-time presenter of folk music concerts in the cultural desert
of Phoenix - as well as booking agent for up-and-coming folk duo D
squared (Don Charles & Deb Gessner) based in the thriving metropolis of
Mayer, AZ, I monitor several of the folk music mailing lists as well as
several others for artists I respect and admire.

This list is one that I continue to read with interest - what a bunch of
characters you are. But I must admit, I have been negligent in attending
John's shows in the past several years. So now I hear that JS will
appear in Phoenix on June 15th - but the venue didn't get mentioned or I
brain cramped it and didn't notice. Is it Tom Anderson's place again?
I will be there this time for sure - gotta catch up and maybe meet some
of you nuts!

Last Sunday, my wife and I were eating breakfast at The Good Egg on
Camelback and "Midnight Wind" was playing just as we sat down. Volume
was so low it was hard to tell but the voice was there and I guess I
don't have to explain to you how and why I picked it out of the air.
Something I remember from the early 70's was an interview on KDKB with
JS and Bill Compton. Think I recall something about John Hartford's
"Aeroplain" album being discussed and Compton saying he thought he was
the hairiest guy around until he saw Hartford. Wish that interview was
available somewhere - anyone?? Bill Compton had a lot to do with the
quality of the music in the Phoenix area and he is missed. People like
John Stewart and Jerry Riopelle were gods around here. Constant
airplay, packed concerts. It was a great time!

Update on the cultural desert - Tom Rush played the Rockin' Horse a few
weeks ago - there were 10 people there. Tom came out and said something
like - what an intimate crowd we have tonight. Played like the place
was packed. Think John would have done the same... Hopefully, that
doesn't happen very much to John and Co. I joined D squared on a New
Mexico tour last December and at one gig we played to 6 people in Taos -
by the end of the night there was only 1 left. He bought a tape (said
he didn't have enought money for the CD) and his check bounced. Go
figure.

The bottom line is - support the artists you enjoy. Go to their
concerts, bring your friends, buy their product.

See you in Scottsdale - Bill Rayner

Dear Friends
I rarely ask for you help but I must, in what I feel is an urgent and
critical situation.
It has been brought o my attention that a scientist named Russel DeValois at
UC Berkeley
is and has been conducting
needless and inhumane experiments
on monkeys and kittens and has
been summarily criticized and chastised by
other doctors in his field for his cruel and
sadistic disregard for living creatures.
I will spare you the graphic details becuse they are to horrible to repeat.
He is considered the most cruel by all in his field.
There is a movement to have his grants removed and his position terminated.
I would ask all of you who care
about these loving little creatures.
To write to UC BERKLEY CHANCELLOR
Chiang -Lin Tien, 200 California Hall. UCB
Berkley Calif.94720 and ask that DeValois no longer be allowed to experiment
on animals and ask for a full investigation into the irresponsibility
documented in recent reports.
Write to the Director of the NIH about the outrageous cover up regarding
theses reports. National Institue of Health, Bethesda MD. 20892.
A long list of other doctors in his field have said that his experinents are
not only cruel but have yeild no wothwhile information.
Animals have starved to death in his crae because he" forgot to feed them."
Sick and injured animals are not often allowed medical treatment in DeValois
labs.
Did you know that the DNA of monkey is 90% the same as ours and a Chimp has
95% the same DNA as a human.
All those in the San Francisco are who would be interested in joining me in a
peaceful demonstration at the lab site. please email me at
Angelbravo@aol.com.
The Devil lives in Berkeley and his name is DeValois.
THIS IS A CALL TO ARMS.
Thank you, you have never let me down.
John Stewart.

From:	GerShep1@aol.com

Thanks to Michelle for the "welcome to bloodlines" message. I found this
site via the AOL bbs but sort of forgot about it until the Palms Playhouse
concert last night. I started listening to John's music in the 70s and
became a regular attendee at the Chuck's Cellar concerts. Unfortunately, I
got out of the loop sometime after the "Blondes" album was released and
didn't really start to catch up until a couple of years ago. So, I really
never had anything to contribute to the bbs, but the messages are fun to
read.

Not to get preachy on ya'll right off the bat, but one thing that came out of
the Palms concert that I think is important was John's mention of Russell
DeValois & animal research. I worked at the equine research lab at UC Davis
for three years and believe me, that was three years too many. DeValois,
however, makes that establishment seem like the garden of Eden. It would be
nice to see those of us who care about these creatures take a (peaceful)
stand.

OK....now I'll get off my soapbox and just add that it'll be great to read
all the various bloodlines messages and I'm really glad to be aboard.

I second the motion to move the chat - are you lurking, Ron? - because we
know that unless John and Dave carry their laptops with them to gigs, neither
one will be able to join the chat.
Not sure if I'll be able to make the Sweetwater show, even though it's one of
my most favorite venues to see John. It's a long way from San Jose on a work
night and I did just see the Big Guy in Capitola.

Well,

Glad all the lurkers have been coming out. I know there at at least a few
"young ones". As always I enjoy and never get tired of hearing about how
Stewart's songs reach folks. Patrick- glad you've come out of the woodworks-
wondered where you've been hiding since the NanciNet days. I found an old
article you wrote in Rediscover or maybe Kingston Korner about a decade ago.
It was a kick seeing your name there.

I am seriously bummed that I missed the Palms show. Not only do I not hear
Black Sky I missed "Mariah"!!! I know that John played that just because I
wasn't there! But I was off doing my Campfirely duties near Bolinas. I was
going to take a picture of a Bolinas sign but I never did see one.....

The netiquette issue seems to have run its course. I think each one who
discussed it brought forward an important point. Michelle of course has no
intention of being the heavy (nor do I when I send out an occasional note
when I wear my Michelle Jr hat). This list, you know, really is a New
Frontier. But Michelle and I, we've been on other lists and seen what can
happen, and believe me that sometimes it isn't pretty. But we seem to have a
very special bunch of folks here, and my private theory is that there is a
certain goodness in the people on this list and it is because of John- not
only his participation, but especially the way his music has spoken to us. It
doesn't reach everyone but it has reached us and we share that bond. This
isn't just a bunch of crazy fans (although we seem to be a bunch of crazy
fans). We're a group of folks who have come together in this new way and
become friends across the wires. We share, we support, we're friends out in
the madness (to steal a line of Nanci Griffith's).

I'm glad you're all out here.

Ron

I put up a note on the website last month that I thought we should skip the
chat since it was a show date. Planned for the enxt one to be the first
Tuesday of June. However, if John and/or Dave can make it next week sometime,
say the second Tuesday, May 13th, we could do that. How does that sound guys?

Consider the letter written, Angelbravo. It brings to mind Paul
McCartney's last tour when he opened the show with clips of animal
research including the electrocution of an elephant to prove it could be
done.
"I wonder if a long time ago, somewhere in the universe, they watched a
man named Adam..." We consider ourselves advanced, but give me a guy who
loves animals anyday.

Look what surfaced in the rarified Arizona air...
. . . another JS denizen of the desert!

Welcome aboard, Bill. And you're right on the mark about John and the
'70s here in Phoenix. He owned the place. Every concert SRO, and it was
every six months.
Labor Day Weekend - 1970 - at Big Surf and the SummersEnd Festival - a
summer "monsoon" storm came up - wind, rain, and Leon Russell's piano got
blown off the stage!! Crazy times.

Yes, John's at Anderson's Fifth Estate on 6/15 - next to the canal bank.
Understand Steve Gordon is working on Tucson and Flagstaff. If this comes
true, some of us just might pull the hat trick. Three JS concerts in one
week. We'll caravan - create our own *Johnny Stew Express* up and down
Interstate 10 and 17!

Too bad about Tom Rush. . .Phoenix should've done much better for Tom. I keep
fantasizing that GorDoom and Tom Anderson work up a deal with Scottsdale's
Center for the Arts - book John into the outdoor - grass lawn -
amphitheater. June evening. Full moon over the mountains. Once again,
 SRO - 2000 JS fanatics., , ,
. . .another dream of mine on the rise.

Again, welcome to the blood. . .Cockatoo (Nancy) will be glad to hear this
(she's moving this weekend, and is offline. . .lives 25 miles up the road in
Prescott).

Talk to you later via direct post....
