Subj: Santa Monica, Mister

Someone had mentioned a possible get-together somewhere in Santa Monica
before the McCabe's date. Is anything in the works?

The most effective (April) wind breaking is done by Sycamores that grow in
long planted rows.. therefore it must be beyound the trees...

After checking the Music Space Message Center I found that it was Dick (stuck
in Chicago) Griffith who suggested The Border Grill on 4'th St. for
Southwestern cuisine, or The Cafe Montana for Calif. style food. Either of
these sound good to me. Any more ideas?
Still hungry,
Mott

I'm the one who suggested a pre-concert dinner get-together, but I don't
know any good places in Santa Monica to eat. Someone mentioned some places
about a week ago ( I think it was PFARNUM ), but I don't recall them now.
I'm open to just about anything from pizza to serious dining. Any more
suggestions? Let's decide on something and do it.
Always Hungry,
Mott

Right back atcha. My e-mail is simple, so I don't forget it.
MButters@aol.com, as you see here.
Funny hearing from you. I've been meaning to ask what strings you've been
using on the 12-string.
Back to you.

The other side of the wind is a boundary that cuts across the edge of a
chasm filled with fear, where empty, dripping shelters leave the young
stranded, hungry but alert and alive, peering at hard earth, and creating
promises.

Also very good, is Back On Broadway, on Broadway, between 20th & 21st. There
is also an Irish Pub on the corner of Wilshire & 23rd that might start the
evening off in the proper mood. And for those of you folks who really want
to go all out, there is the Pacific Dining Car, on Wilshire & 27th (approx).
It is rather expensive, but very nice. How about a show of hands for those
interested?

My wind "story" is very simple.....there is nothing in the universe like the
sound of wind blowing thru pine trees. I'm moving where I can hear that all
the time :)))
Nanc <--- outta the flatlands and into the pines <G>
PS...what that means techinically is that I'm in the process of moving from
Chino Valley, AZ, into Prescott...15 miles away, but into the TREES...Chino
is quite flat and treeless :((((

Subj: Re: Martin Guitars & KT influence
Date: 97-03-25
From: RMoore1004@aol.com
This past weekend I went to the Dallas Guitar Show and saw the Kingston Trio
Anniversary instruments. They're beautifully understated. Each instrument
(D-28, O-18T, Vega long neck) has "The Kingston Trio - 1957-1997" inlaid on
the fingerboard, and each has a sticker inside with its number (of 40) and is
signed by Nick, Bob, John, and George. Being most interested in the banjo, I
picked it up and examined it (#2 of 40). The neck and rim are beautiful
quilted maple finished in a transparent charcoal grey. I don't care too much
for the color, but it sounds fantastic! It's actually made by Deering (they
now own the rights to make Vegas). The price for the set (they only come
that way) is (are we sitting down?) $12,500!! Maybe if we each chipped in
$20, we could buy a set for the whole Bloodlines list! I guess I'll just
have to get a stock banjo from Deering ($2500) or wait for a commemorative to
come up for sale second-hand.
I've actually had moments when I've tried to calculate whether I could budget
such a purchase...then I return to reality. That's how strong the Trio's
influence was on me!
They really were pioneers: the Grammys created a Folk category the year
after "Tom Dooley;" they were the first pop artists to sell LPs rather than
singles; they were also among the first pop artists to sell stereo records.
They pioneered the pop "concert" concept, beginning at colleges, then
branching out to off-campus venues. They got people to buy guitars & banjos
and actually participate in making music. The Beatles got many of those same
people to plug them in. It really bothered me to see their quality slip with
the move to Decca. Even then, their concerts knocked me out! It also
bothers me that their importance and influence has been given a back seat to
PP&M and Dylan. Without the KT, they wouldn't have had a chance!
Well, I've gone on enough. Thought you might like more info in the
instruments and the ravings of a 50-year-old KT fan.

a cat named Jerry sang that if you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind. The
other side of the wind, therefore, must be someplace safe. (May the four
winds blow you safely home).
Bluesy, what is the AOL buddies you speak of?

AOL Buddies is a sytem that lets anyone that has your screen name know
immediately that you are online. Thus visits when you may be trying to do
something else. Aggravating sometimes.

Yes, Buddy List can be aggravating, but simple, courtesy solves most
problems.
When I see someone on my Buddy List online, and I want to send an IM, a
simple "Howdy. Got time to chat?" works wonders. If someone doesn't
respond, or says "no", I'm not offended and don't send any further messages.
When I get an IM, if I'm busy, I say so. Mostly, I'm glad to chat, if only
for a short time.

Or, you can go to Keyword "buddyview" and click on "preferences" and block
your AOL screen name from appearing on others' buddylists. I, for one,
enjoying getting IMs from my online "buddies" -- to each his/her own.

Yes, but out of common courtesy you should consent to being added to someones
buddy list--just in case they really aren't your buddy. These are the cases
I'm speaking of.

Bluesy,
They didn't design it that way, as I'm sure you know. Another one of the
glitches about cyberspace that we have no control over...
Be sure and see Paul4500's reply about blocking it, if you so choose.

Subj: Rough Sketches Is Here!
Date: 97-03-26
From: folkera@loopback.com (Ian Shaw - Folk Era Records)
The Rough Sketches discs arrived here at Folk Era today!
John / Dave & Homecoming should have them by the McCabes show April
5, if not possibly at the Salt Lake show on Saturday, and if you wish
to order them right away from us, you can do so through the
Rediscover Music Catalogue at 800-232-7328. We're also in the
process of adding them to our website at http://www.folkera.com and
should have them available through there within the next few days
(I'll let you all know as soon as it's up). The album should also be
available in stores starting April 22, so if you're somewhere and
don't see it, let the store know it's not there, and us know which is
store is being deficient, and we'll try and change that!
The album looks and sounds great, and I don't think anybody who sees
and hears it will be dissappointed! From the opening track Spirit of
the Road to the closing monologue of The Road, with highlights like
the new version of Inteview With An Angel (with Buffy on vocals)
in between, I think this will be John's best received "label" album
since Punch The Big Guy.
We're planning to do a strong radio push, and for those that asked,
yes - any album released on Folk Era is submitted to NARAS for Grammy
consideration. We're hoping that through our promotions on this one
we can at least get the people who do the voting to know it's out
here.
I guess that's pretty much the story. I'll try and keep everybody
up to date as things move forward with the album! Hopefully I'll
have some big things to report. Thank you too for all your support
of John over the year's. It's a real pleasure for us at Folk Era to
be working with such a great artist and a community of fans like
there are here on bloodlines.
Also (finally and overdue) a personal thanks to everybody for the UK &
Ireland suggestions. I've been meaning to write some replies, and just
been so busy I've hardly had time to think about anything that wasn't
directly work or wedding related.
Talk to you all soon!
Sincerely,
Ian

Angelbravo & DBATTI:
It looks like my wife and I are the only bloodliners going to Salt Lake
City - and certainly the only ones from Nuevo Mexico. If you guys need
someone to help sell tapes and other goodies (like hopefully Rough
Sketches CDs) we'd be more than happy to help. We should be in SLC
mid-late afternoon.
Requests for show: Anna On A Memory, The River, I Could Have Been a
Runner.
I hear Angelbravo is currently 12 string-less. Bummer, was looking
forward to hearing some
on Saturday.
Have a Good trip. See you on Sat night.
Earl K.
