I was thinking about giving people a few months and maybe trying to put
something together in late June. If people think they need more time, I think
we can be very informal about setting a deadline. On the other list, the
deadline is literally when enough material has been accumulated to fit on a
tape.

Subj:	An appeal to your collective wisdom
Date:	97-03-05
From:	folkera@loopback.com (Ian Shaw - Folk Era Records)

Hello Bloodliners,

One of the reasons I've not participated as fully as I'd like in
recent weeks is that in addition to my day job for Folk Era, I've been
working full time at planning a wedding (mine on May 17th!!!!!
Yay!!!!) and a honeymoon. Excited and busy have both become very apt
understatements.

The appeal to your collective wisdom is thusly: The honeymoon
destination is Ireland and the UK. We (my fiancee Rachel and I) have
Ireland pretty well planned, but have just begun the planning the UK
part of the trip, and would love to have your thoughts. We're
planning to arrive in either Glasgow or Edinburgh (flight dependent)
travel around Scotland, head to London, then wander east through
Wales before leaving. What should we make a point of seeing in
between?

I know this is a list about John, but since he's got pretty strong
ties to the UK, and a bunch of you are from Scotland and Great
Britian, and a larger bunch have visited, I couldn't think of a better
place to ask. Thanks for any help you can give us!

In a joyful tizzy,

Ian (and Rachel)

You're right. This is a JS list but hey we're all interested in other
things, too. You must go to the Traquair Arms Hotel in Innerleithen.
About 30 miles south of Edinborough in the Scottish Borders. Small
mill-town . We've been there numerous times and love the area. Very laid
back but near eough the city. If you really want the skinny on some out
of the way places contact me privately and I'll give you some great
recommendations. Paul

One thought re Edinburgh--you might want to stay in Borthwick Castle, about a
half hour outside of town, which hopefully hasn't changed since my wife and I
stayed there in 1990. It's steeped in history--there's still a chunk out of
one of the exterior walls from one of Cromwell's cannon balls. Mary Queen of
Scots stayed there, as did the Earl of Bothwell, on the last night before her
capture by the English. There are only a few guest rooms, including those
previously occupied by M.Q.of S. and E. of B. You can sit in the Great Hall
by a roaring fire sipping single malt Scotch before dinner. There's no place
quite like this one.

I just called McCabe's in Santa Monica (where Route 66 either began or ended,
depending on your point of view). Tickets for John's April 5 performances GO
ON SALE MONDAY, MARCH 17. As usual, two shows -- 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
I'll try to remember to remind everyone a day or two before the sale date.
 McCabe's phone number is 310-828-4497.

If you're flying to California for the show, McCabe's is about midway between
the Burbank Airport and LAX, just off the 405.

OK, this is pretty touristy advice, but here goes.

If this is your first trip to London, Ian, I would encourage you not to
overlook the Tower of London or Shakespeare's home, in Stratford. Stratford
is a drive out of town but not too bad.

My family and I had our first trip a little over three years ago, two months
after John Stewart played the Community Theater here in Chattanooga. A
wonderful double-header, for that year. London became a second home, in terms
of atmosphere and comfort. It was a sort of homecoming. It's our history,
too. We're English by way of Scotch-Irish. A little heavy on the Scotch, for
some of us.

I guess I'll be keeping track of some of the great tips you're getting, for
the next trip.

Would like to time that for one of John's gigs at The Turf.

Your dad's company is a big part of how I ultimately made my way to this
Bloodline. Helped me catch up with John's career. Helped me tremendously in a
first concert production. Met your dad in Media, PA, in '92. Very friendly.
Very helpful.

Tell him thanks for me, if you would.

Bon voyage, vio con dios, and happy trails. Best wishes on the Great
Adventure.

Buffy, the D man, and myself played...all I can say is that the gig was
"interesting" ...I had a great time...the grand finale was everybody on stage
singing with the 60 member gospel choir...we got religion that night.
Anyway, maybe they'll invite us back for the '97 "Pasquinade."

I'll bet every UK listmember smiled at this. It demonstrates perfectly the
difference between the British and American perception of relative
distances. Nobody in Britain would think of Stratford as being 'a drive out
of town' from London - they'd probably say: "But it's on the other side of
the country!" i.e. it's reasonably local in U.S. terms, but fairly remote to
the the British mind.

Quite a nice drive though, if you take the 'A' roads and stay off the
motorways...but then you'd take ages to get there. The other thing is that
it's (as you say) *so* touristy that it's become a cliche. I'll bet there's
more Americans than Brits there on an average summer's day. Oh well, do it
anyway.

Still chuckling,

Mike

I just found an official Martin Guitar newsletter in a music
store...something fairly new, apparently. The January 1997 edition talks
about creating 40 sets of instruments--a D-28, a Vega long-neck banjo, and an
O-18 tenor guitar--to mark the Kingston Trio's 40th anniversary. I can't
imagine being able to come up with the cash for those, but I'm glad they're
doing it. Each of the instruments will be signed by Bob, Nick, George, and
John. There's a nice little bio of the Trio, and information on the specs of
the instruments. Rather a collector's item itself, I suppose. There will
also be a number of special D-28's made, but only according to orders, which
must be placed by October 30. Here's the address:
The Martin Guitar Company
P. O. Box 329
Nazareth PA 18064-0329
Telephone: 610-759-2837

Go for it, all you rich Stewartistas and Triotistas! If anyone's feeling
generous, order a guitar (or a whole set) for me!

Subj:	introduction
Date:	97-03-10
From:	cwoodward@ucflink.com (Charlie Woodward)

Business and other concerns haven't allowed participation
time to get priorities straight and join in the discussion.

I guess an introduction is in order to join the Bloodliners.
I was always a Trio fan, and particularly enjoyed the turn the
music took when John joined them. I'm one of those who listens
to the words, and John's songs held a lot of meaning for the times.

I had pretty much lost touch until around 1970 when I saw a
copy of California Bloodlines while browsing around my
campus bookstore. I snatched that up and played it until it wore out.

John's records were not that easy to find in Michigan where
I grew up, but when I did come upon a new album, it was great.
Probably like a lot of us, I learned to play guitar mostly by
playing along with John. Although I never took it to the lengths
that Lindsey Buckingham did, I have had an awful lot of fun
with it and am grateful to John for the inspiration.

I saw the Trio in about 1963 in Detroit, and didn't get a chance
to see John in person again until my wife surprised me with
tickets to shows he did in Fort Lauderdale. Turned out to be
the best anniversary present ever, as we attended all 4 shows
on two nights. I remember thinking that John and Dave must have
thought we were nuts, but it looks like we John Stewart fans
are an awfully dedicated group.

Just finished watching the videos, and they're great. It's
unbelievable that the music just keeps getting better and better.
You've probably gone over it before, but as good as some of
the early songs are, it's hard to beat the material on Bandera,
Rough Sketches, and the rest of John's later endeavors.

Thanks,

Charlie
