PA to CA is more than commendable, it's outrageous!
But totally understandable, too, given the reason.
And taking a cue from "Dave," there's every reason to hope we might help
round out a summer tour. St. Louis has some very fine venues where John
would simply sparkle, as I'm sure Pennsylvania does, too.
But your note brings to mind two questions I would like to pose to everyone:
1) Again, Margie's "road trip" seems to me a record. Has anyone traveled
further to see John?
2) Maybe I missed it, but is there anything new to report on the Route 66
tour?

For those folks who have been sending me notes asking about the house

Not further, but maybe longer. I took a 12-hour bus trip from Syracuse, NY

Date: 97-03-01
From: GeryJarcia@aol.com
Maybe I am the odd man out here, (well, yes, as a matter of fact I am odd,
but that is beside the point) but I don't feel that the Grammies are any true
recognition of an Artist's quality or achievement. But, it certainly seems a
noble quest, so good luck.
Some say the Grammies are even jinxed. Look at Billy Ray Cyrus (if you
can). He got 5 nominations last year, took home no trophies & went literally
from megastar to 'who are they now' in the course of a few weeks. Lest we
forget Milli Vanilli. John could certainly take some of the tarnish off that
trophy if he won.
To me, the greatest recognition an artist can receive is the accolades of
an appreciative fan base; to have the fans share the music & joy with others.
For the most part, much of the music that garners the lion's share of
airplay today is unoriginal uninspired music, akey breakey heartburn if you
will, that doesn't make the listener think (Kinda like prime time TV, ya
know?). It is the intelligent listener (Stewartistas?) that seeks out the
true artist, the quality performance or recording, the fan who goes to the
clubs & small venues and treasures the angelbravos, the working musicians of
the world. The intelligent listener is but a small piece of the mass
market. It is a rare occasion when a grammie statue, or any mass music
award, is bestowed in the right direction, so your challenge is great.
If we end up chasing windmills on this quest, just remember
Grammies? we don't need no stinkin grammies.... we got angelbravo, and
if you look hard enough, you just may also see the eyes of sweet virginia, or
even hear a cannon in the rain....

Subj: Rough Sketches. . .Released or Not?
Date: 97-03-02
From: RGodwin495@aol.com
Time out, everybody. . .put the grammys, the tour venues, and life itself on
momentary hold!! A matter of urgent priority has just surfaced!!
It's been my understanding that the Rough Sketches CD wouldn't be released
nationally for another two months. So, I've been rather patient while tending
to other, more mundane issues. Such was the case on this bright, sunny
Arizona Saturday morning. . .when the postman delivered my mail. And out
from the junk mail, magazines and bills appeared the latest issue of
"Rediscover Music Catalogue", Folk Era's product catalog of in-stock and
new releases.
And much to my surprise, look what's on the front of the catalog -- it's the
ROUGH SKETCH CD's package cover!!!! And the graphics? It's a sketch of a
man (John ??), complete with what looks like a ten-gallon hat, and what
appears to be a six-shooter in his right hand, pointed down!! Don't know
what he's aiming at, for the illustration is cropped right above the knees.
No little black dogs, tho. . .unless they're lying at his feet!
Then, you turn to page 5 and there's an entire page devoted to John's and the
KT3's albums. And over in the far right column, guess what is featured? Yep,
you've got it -- the Rough Sketches CD! Priced at $15 (JST1437D) and does
include the lyrics.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. .. the questions of the hour are: Has Rough Sketches, in its
long awaited CD form, been released?
Or is it being released now through Rediscover Catalogue, then later through
Folk Era Records'(Rough Sketches CD label) national distributors? When does
Homecoming get it?
As much as I plan to order it thru Homecoming Records, I'm still curious -
if I call the catalogue's 800 #(1-800-232-7328) will they have it, or tell
me I would have to wait?
John - Dave B. - Clack - LordFrench - somebody!! What's the status
of Sketches?
The gathered clan of bloodliners await your good word. . .
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Rickster
To supplement all this, had a good phone conversation with Ian Shaw at Folk
Era earlier this week. In addition to Interview With an Angel being re-cut
with Buffy, some of the tracks got the re-digitalizing treatment from
Northeastern Digital, Inc. From what I *hear*, the CD version is a
mind-blower.
also. . . Ian, who does follow bloodlines, will be giving an update this
coming week. on bloodlines. . .if all goes as planned. And, YES, he is
up-to-date on the Grammy thread. . .with some interesting perspectives about
it..
Thanx for the chat reminder, Ron. I'll email Ian about it, just in case he
missed yours. . . it'd be really nice to get him in on the chat.
Perhaps he can drop a "morsel or two of news"!!

Rediscover and Folk Era are one in the same. Both run by Alan Shaw. "He's"
been mighty quiet lately.
BTW, FYI:
Look for the KT3 Stewart years "and" Cumberland Three/Whiskey Hill Singers,
etc stuff hopefully later this year. On import, of course. Three new box
sets on the way. Meanwhile, be content with "The Ghost of Tom Joad." All
you Grammy boo hooers. That was a great "folk" album. Give the boss credit
for reinventing himself and Sony for forgetting 8 million in CD sales. And
even though you couldn't call Shawn Colvin's "A Few Small Repairs" a "folk
album," at least she gets a nod for Best Pop Female vocal. "Repairs" was
probably the best album of all from 1996. Give a listen if you haven't.

I'd be glad to send you Kim's address and phone numbers, but I'd prefer not

Hello all,
I am a long time (I;m 49 and holding) fan of JS beginning with the KT
but actually a much bigger fan of his solo career. I have a very
extensive collection of vinyl (many dupes if anyone is interested), live
concert and radio performances from usa and GB, posters and photos and
of course the CD's.
My favorite period is probably some WB stuff and RCA stuff. The newest
stuff seems to have lost me but Bandaras is pretty catchy. I;ve seen JS
many times live and always have been moved. I even saw him on the night
I got engaged at Jonathan Swift;s in Boston (now closed). I presented
John with a Gold Record for "Gold" that I purchased from a collector at
a concert in Hartord, Ct several years ago. He did not even have a
copy. Friend Ben Blake took a photo and it is a prized possession.
Haven't seen JS in a few years due to conflicts but I see his is
appearing near again in april so I hope to see him then.

(Phoenix Concerts) it was no small part because of some of the song titles.

that I found out he was from California.
I still consider him a blood brother of sorts. Great songs...great guy.

More thoughts on traveling to see JS:
In my opinion each of John's shows is a unique and wonderful experience. My
consistent reaction is: It just doesn't get any better than this - I can't
get enough That's why I try to take advantage of any chance to see a show.
Many of my trips are related to using an expiring frequent flyer ticket. When
faced with a "use it or lose it" ticket and the question: where do you want
to go? - the right answer for me is always: wherever John is appearing.
I hope to get to a show or a tour in the UK sometime in the future.

Subj: JS Tribute Compilation
Date: 97-03-03
From: rcaplow@decisive.com (Randi Caplow)
Fred Grittner has kindly offered to use his knowledge and resources to
produce our tribute compilation on CD. He has access to a CD burner which he
can use to do this. Would everyone prefer to have it done on CD, and if we do
and the cost is a little higher than for cassette, would everyone agree to
this? Here are Fred's messages regarding the details of this, for those who
are interested:
snip 1:
I have a project studio with a PC running Sound Forge and other editing
>software and I have a CD-R as well. I burned a CD of Vietnam tapes
>containing songs by a fellow bloodliner, Bob Moore. It was amazing how much
>sludge I cleaned off the sound files. Once I got stuff edited, it was very
>easy to burn the CD. Which leads me to the question: couldn't we offer the
>Bloodliners CDs as well as tapes. I would be willing to burn them. Best
>Buy sells raw CD's for around $7. I have the NEATO label program and it is
>slick and cheap to produce quality labels. It also has templates for the CD
>booklet and back insert.
and snip 2, after I commented to him that we are not restricting rules on
fidelity, so that people with 4-tracks and even less equipment than that may
contribute:
"I am aware the fidelity of the original tapes wont
be too good but CDs seem to be the most accepted media today. I have a 2x
recorder, which cuts burn time almost in half. A 45-minute cassette would
take about 24 minutes to burn, so I could do 6 or 7 a night and many more on
several weekends--once you get the song files set up it is like a bread
machine!"
Thanks, Fred!!!
So what do you all think? Should we take him up on it and do CD's, or would
you prefer only cassettes? I think CDs would be a bit more fun for us to do
and may inspire more of us to contribute ("look, mom, I'm on a CD...").
I will also go ahead and do a cover design and post it to my web site for you
guys to review and comment on. Anyone wishing to contribute to that aspect of
it can e-mail me privately.

Latest word Rediscover's heard from Bear Family is 2 different box sets,
1 of all the Guard KT material (including the Whiskeyhill singers stuff)
1 of the Stewart KT material (on which details have been sketchier).
We've also heard that there will be a hardcover book with each box
set.
Bear Family also has been pushing the dates back. The most recent
we've heard is the Guard material in time for Xmas, the Stewart
material next year (1998!). I'm sure though that unlike a record
label whose initial is C, when Bear Family pushes something back,
it's cause they're insisting on doing the best possible job they can
on something, and not cause they have something "more important" to
work on.
I've no idea if the Signals Through The Glass album, or what if any
Cumberland Three stuff might be included.
Sincerely,
Ian

They aren't exactly one and the same . . .
Rediscover is the mail order catalogue. It carries all kinds of
releases, including all of the Folk Era releases, but Rediscover
doesn't actually put out records. Rediscover retails to individual
customers. Rediscover is also primarily a catalogue of nostalgia
product.
Folk Era is the record label. We put out CD's, market them to
stores through our distribution network, do radio promotion, print
advertising, etc. We don't actually sell to consumers though. We
sell wholesale to stores. About half of what Folk Era releases are
contemporary ablums, the other half reissues. (Based on catalogue
size were also one of the larger independent folk labels in the
market).
The reason this distinction is important is that our distributors and
the stores tend to get unhappy if they think they're competing with
us.
Finally, Allan isn't actually on this list (I've tried though). For
now, I'm the only reader from Folk Era. If you want to correspond directly
with Allan though, he can be reached at FolkEraMAS@aol.com
Best,
Ian

Subj: Re: Rough Sketches. . .Released or Not?
Date: 97-03-03
From: folkera@loopback.com (Ian Shaw - Folk Era Records)
The defintive answer is . . .
Yes - We're VERY close on Rough Sketches, but NO, it isn't out yet.
We are expecting to have product in house by April 1, and Rediscover
should be able to ship any orders received around that date. We hope
to have product to John for the McCabes and NY tours, but the official
street date (meaning the date that it should be available in stores) is
April 22. We also hope to have the album added to our website by
April 1 (http://www.folkera.com)
The reason it was listed in the Rediscover Catalogue is that the
catalogue only gets printed about 4 times a year, so even if we know
something is coming, but isn't here yet, we will include it. We
meant to mark available April 22, but the proofreaders blinked.
I apologize for not announcing anything sooner here on Bloodlines, but
it's my tendency to wait until all the "i's" are dotted and "t's" crossed
before I say anything, having tasted my foot one time too many. The
luxury of that choice isn't as available throught Rediscover. At this point
though, everything is on schedule, so the juciy details are . . .!
Cover Art by John - it's a gorgeous drawing, and the colors really
jump out. Back cover drawing is also by John, and there are a couplea
nice photos of John inside the booklet, as well as full lyrics. John
chose the cover art, so any questions about the whereabouts of the
dogs are beyond my ability to answer.
There's also 2 new songs - one is Spirit Of The Road, which opens the
album, and the other is a new version of Inteview With An Angel,
with Vegas's part sung by none other than Buffy Ford. The new
rendition is a huge highlight of the album for me. I've just been
listening to the CD-R reference copy we have to approve duplication
this weekend, and it sounds great! I think this is easily the best looking
and sounding Stewart studio album we'll have had since Punch The Big
Guy.
Finally, both Michelle and John (thank you both) have given
permission for this - the bloodlines subscription info will also be
printed in the booklet.
If you've got any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them. I'm
sure I've missed something. Also - sorry I haven't been able to
contribute more to bloodlines - I'm usually so busy that I have my
hands full just reading through things and trying to keep up!
Sincerely,
Ian

Subj: chat and Clack's

From: ClackClack@aol.com
Hi folks-
I've been adding new things to Clack's Cellar. With the help of PJ March I've
put in a discography along with photos of the Stewart Trio albums. PJ did a
real great job on them. To keep the page loading time in reason the images
are on the small side but still nice. Amazingly my AOL browser loaded the
page about 5 times as fast as Internet Explorer. Also added a guestbook so
visitors can leave comments when you visit the website and read the comments
others have left. Hope to have photos up from the Maestro's concert within a
couple weeks.
Clack's is at: http://members.aol.com/clackclack/rebeffa1.htm
On the chat tomorrow, March 4 at 6:30 Pacific on AOL in private room
neonroad. I have some busy days and nights this week and will probably miss
it. I would appreciate if someone could log the chat and mail me a copy to
post to Clack's. If you haven't logged a chat before it is easy.
On a PC (don't know if a MAC is different) before you enter the chat room,
open the file menu in upper right of your AOL header. Click on log manager
and this brings up a log box. Open chat log and give it a name like
chat397.log. Then minimize. The chat will automatically be recorded for you
and end up in your AOL directory in the file chat397.log. Before you exit AOL
after the chat, just open up the log manager again with a click and choose
close log. You're done. You can usually close the log after you exit AOL too,
but I wouldn't tempt fate. If you could then just send me the log as an
attachment to an email it would be appreciated. I'll try and make the end of
the chat if you folks are still going strong.
Ron
