Why fly when you can take the train? <G>
I leave in the early morning for Missouri....have to drive to Flagstaff to
catch Amtrak, where they're having the biggest snow storm so far this
season. Figgers....I pray for snow for months, and it has to happen when I
have to DRIVE in it. :))))

If you've never ridden the Southwest Chief from LA to Chicago, it's an
experience to remember. I did it a year ago Oct....and went on to NYC by
train also. The LA/Chicago run somewhat parallels Route 66 (John, you
really oughta try the train!)
Train people are like no other breed, except for maybe JS fans <G> Everyone
gets acquainted, and I have met some wonderful people and had the time of my
life, every time I've taken the train (which has been relatively frequent
because I don't fly...ever)

Anyway, just wanted to plug Amtrak, after seeing Floyd's signature....it's
really a blast and I'm looking forward to it alot...just not looking forward
to the drive to GET to the train.
John, I'm sure you could find a vast wealth of material for songs after
hopping on a train....(who am *I* to suggest your material...you've been
doing wonderfully without MY help for years! <G> ) Since you've already
written several songs with "train" references, could we assume that you've
already done train trips in the past, and
that's where you've already gotten some song material? :))))
I'll see you all when I get back from Missouri, next Monday evening.

Nancy..... in usually sunny but tonight snowy Arizona (there's a wind
chill of 3 in Flagstaff)
"Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit
salvation?
"...Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have
entertained angels without knowing it..." ~ Hebrews 1:14; 13:2

Nancy,

Congratulations on finding your mother! I, too, have an internet
(Bloodlines, actually) reunion story of my own, though not as dramatic. I
was found by a fellow guitar player and Stewartista whom I met in Vietnam in
1972, and haven't seen since. He subscribed to Bloodlines about a week
before Christmas, saw one of my posts, inquired as to my identity, and voila!
instant (after 25 years) reunion!

Best of luck to you and thanks ro Michelle for unwittingly making this all
possible.

Happy New Year!

Bob

I'm not sure how this conversation went from
Wingless Angels (good album - best song is "Hung on the Heart") to
trains, but I've got to agree with Nancy. There is more romance in
railroads than in any other subject (ie - Ghost of the Superchief).
About 18 years ago I figured out that I was never going to make a living
singing JS songs - even in my home town of Scottsdale (you out there
RGodwin495@
aol.com?) so I turned to my second love. Trains. There is nothing more
amazing than 2000 tons of iron thundering down the rail - the original
heavy metal you might say. At the risk of plugging my own commercial
entity, if the JS Route 66 tour swings through New Mexico this summer,
it needs to take a day off and go 100 mi north of Santa Fe to the
Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR where 80 and 90 year old steam locomotives
fight thier way across the mountains the same way they did....well 80
years ago. Here is a song just dying to be written.

Superintendent of Operations,
C&TSRR and Attendee of the Phoenix Concerts in 1974.

ps: I promise no more commercials - but I do work in a cool place.

Hi Floyd,
yes , you did your tiatribe on drum machines when you decided to make your
story in The Kingston Trio book a platform for your anti drum machine
obsession. 'Come on John, just because Lindsey uses one' or some cheap shot
in that vein.
Yea Floyd Lindsey and half the free World uses them. I can see you're still
riding that horse. Floyd, I really don't care that you don't like
drum machines. It would have been a perfect cd if not for Rocky Top? (sorry
John) Like I'm going to be crestfallen that you don't like Rocky Top?
I imagine you wrote your narrow little review on a computer. COME ON FLOYD
just beacuse Ben Fong Torres use one.

Earl,

I live in Colorado Springs and I've been on the train. It is pure romance.
I went with my Dad (who, btw, is a big Kingston Trio fan). We both love
trains. Yours, and the Durango train. It's memories of things past, eh?

John,

Glad to see the sense of humor is still there. Here is the thing on the drum
machine. I recall a review (maybe it was the interview record RSO put out,
I'll have to check my copy), where you said something about the beauty of
human error being recorded live on the DBGH album. You don't get that with a
drum machine. To add irony to it John, I'm really into ambient music that is
almost all electronic. . .
Your section of the book was written on a typewriter...given to Ben Blake
after the computer revolution swept me up. Best to Buffy. Drummer hit the
wham bam...

      Earl,

You train sounds like the ideal excuse to map northern New Mexico into my
next vacation plans.

In a way, I've always associated Route 66 and trains together, atleast here
in Arizona. Coming across thru Holbrook, Winslow, Flagstaff, Kingman the
highway parallels the tracks (as does I-40 now) in many areas. For miles,
you can look out and see the track. . . and many west and east-bound trains.
It's big country, with sweeping panoramas of vermillion cliffs, sage and
blue sky forever.

You've just got to think that, over the years, there have been countless
people who have combined both highway and track as their own Blue Dream Road
to the coast.

What's all this lead to? . . just what you mentioned - an endless supply of
material, both of nature and human nature. . . for John to touch on. . . and
 sing of.
But I have a feeling that he's still ahead of us, and has been down this
road, and track, before in search of word and melody.

       ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you ever get back to Scottsdale in the summer (hey, its a *dry* heat!) ?
John always plays Andersen's Fifth Estate in June or July. Hopefully, by
then, we can identify each other by buttons. . .

Subj:	House concert update
Date:	97-01-14
From:	ClackClack@aol.com

Hi Gang-

Still exploring the possibility of a house concert for the Bloodliners. I'm
in Vallejo which is about an hour northeast of San Francisco. A number of
folks have expressed interest, on this list and privately to me, about
wanting to do this.

No promises yet, and a date is not set. We will be as flexible as possible to
accomodate John and as many guests as we can. I think the max we can
reasonably do at my house without an overload is 40 people. At 40 people I
want to guarantee John $20 a head donation. I think this is very reasonable
for this special opportunity. I would be more than happy if some folks donate
more than $20 in case we don't fill out at 40 people. ALL the donations
collected will go to John. I would also hope that those who come plan on
buying that CD/book/ or tape from John that you've been meaning to get so we
can make this worth John's while.

What works best for me is a weekend in mid-April. But this is not set, and we
have time to plan. If May works better for most folks on this list that is
what we will do.

So I'm asking now for a head count. If you're pretty sure you can come,
holler now or forever hold your peace. Let me know what is better for you,
mid-April or sometime in May. Let me know how much you're willing to pony up.
After we get enough responses we'll take it from there.

April and will be making the route 66 trek west from New Mexico to visit

schedule it, the better for me, but if I've got some flexibility if I
know far enough in advance.
Count me in for 2 seats.

Date:	97-01-15
From:	don-fish@msn.com (D&FR/ Peeveyroo)

I pulled out my copy of Fire in the Wind this weekend and noticed the date:
1977. Which, of course, means this is its 20th anniversary.

This raises a variety of thoughts: Isn't it amazing how well the music stands
up through two decades? How the hell old have I gotten? But mostly this: This
album HAS to come out on CD.

So we -- the JS fans of AOL and all the Bloodliners of the world -- have to do
something about this. But what? Flood Razor & Tie with requests? Flood Folk
Era with requests? Beg John? Kidnap the Navy goat? Somebody, anybody who would
know: Who has the power to make this happen?

Our vinyl is getting scratchy. Our cassettes are getting thin. This album is
too good to fade away. ``Fire in the Wind.'' ``18 Wheels.'' ``The Last
Hurrah.'' There has to be a way to convince somebody that there's a buck to be
made off a 20th anniversary Fire in the Wind CD.

(Sound of trumpets in the background): We have to make this happen!! -- Don

This is a great idea. Maybe someone at Folk Era can clue us Bloodliners in
on how we can help make it happen in 1997. Or Dave, what are the
possibilities of this being a Homecoming release -- that would be a first,
wouldn't it?

18 wheel gotta roll...and "Fire in the Wind" has gotta be on CD soon.

From:	NAVARRO@ai.sri.com (Georgia Navarro)

Ron: I'm brand new to the list (late December), and would like to put
my name down, plus my 2 daughters who grew up listening to John every
Sunday morning. I had lost track of John, until my daughter, who lives
in Palo Alto, called and asked if I would like an early Christmas
present. She asked if I would like to go see John in Palo Alto on Dec 13.
Lord, was I excited. I hadn't seen him in person since the mid seventies
at Chuck's Cellar.  I was absolutely mesmerized during the whole show;
loved every minute of it. (A bit of gossip.... Jeri Walsh (Bill's wife)
sat right behind me. Apparently, she's also a big Stewart fan.)

Anyway, put down 3 for me, and anytime in April or May is fine, since I
just live down the road from you in San Jose. I'm willing to pay whatever
you say, considering what I've paid for some concerts in the past few
years. I about croaked when my daughters talked me into going to the
Eagles concert at Shoreline a couple of years ago, and ponied up $75
each for 4 of us. I have to admit I really liked it, since we had good
seats. I'm a season ticket holder there, and was able to get tickets
the day before they went on sale.

but don't have a sound card, so have no idea what they are like.

I absolutely agree. One of John's best.

It would also be terrific if "Signals Through The Glass" could come out on

Here's my humble opinion:

The best bet for "Fire in the Wind" to make it to CD would probably be either
Polydor UK (they released "The Best of John Stewart, Turning Music Into Gold"
which was the two "Dream Babies" RSO albums and own the UK masters to "Fire")
or Razor & Tie who have dealt with Polydor in the US and must have the
connections. Folk Era is another possibility. Every time John has asked
former record companies for licensing options, they ask for exhorbatant
amounts, so I don't see Homecoming doing the deal.

Polydor owns the masters...I would say get an address, fax, or e-mail address
for Polydor in the U.S., Polydor UK, and Razor & Tie and flood them with
requests for "Fire In the Wind" and see what happens....what's the worst that
can happen? Allan & Ian (Hi guys) are plugged into Bloodlines so this will
get to Folk Era...of course they do have "Bandera" & "Rough Sketches" coming
out, so they might be busy with other JS projects.

way to get to Virginia to see the Journeymen...this is a FANTASTIC

One of the "Writers in the Round" series of shows at the Bottom Line in NYC
several years ago featured John Stewart, John Phillips, Guy Clark, and Robert
Earl Keene. The idea of John joining the Journeymen for Chilly Winds is not
that far out. John Stewart and John Phillips sang Chilly Winds that night in
both shows! It was an incredible evening which featured great songs and some
great conversation. Scott MacKenzie made a guest appearance as well and sang
San Francisco and another song, the title of which escapes me at the moment.
I hope to make it to the Journeymen show as well, but I don't know if my

they doing a series of concerts?
