I have a question for angelbravo (or anyone else who might know)
concerning his live on-stage sound:
What kind of pickup do you use on your Taylor 12-string? Did it come
with it did your guitar tech install it? I'm really impressed with the
sustain it has. Most saddle pickups tend to make a 12 string sound
real "rubberbandy". Does it have a pre-amp? Also, what do you use in
the way of outboard signal processing between you and sound board? I've
noticed a "black box" or two on stage in the past, and was curious in
how you created the John Stewart Sound.

What is it about Wingless Angels? Everytime it gets mentioned it's
'disappointing', 'John's poorest album', etc.

It would seem that John himself is not particularly enamoured of it, which
may further colour people's opinions, but I beg to differ; I really like
this album, in fact it's my second favourite after (surprise surprise)
California Bloodlines.

Any record with 'Josie', 'Survivors' and 'Some Kind Of Love' must have
something going for it, and I don't see much wrong with the production either.

Now I don't want to start a 'worst album' thread (I can see John wincing
already), but the one I've never managed to get into is Trancas. Drum
machines, synths, that haircut. Eeeek! The 1980s!

Anyway, isn't it about time we had one of them there readers' poll thingies?
(No, for *favourite* album/song of course). But somebody would need to
collate the results...erm, ahem...Michelle?

Ahem. (Grunt, cough, sneeze, slurp)
Well that IS what I do (when I'm not chasing after the kids). I would like
to put together a little e-mail survey every month or so and then post the
results. They did this on the NanciNet last year with great results.

Let me look into it and I'll keep y'all posted.

BTW Wingless Angels is my ALL TIME FAVORITE, TAKE TO A DESERT ISLAND, NEVER
TRAVEL WITHOUT IT album.

And if you like the song, go rent the video "Wings of Desire" German with
subtitles, but great on a snowy day with a bowl of popcorn and some hot
chocolate with a splash of peppermint Scnaps.

Maybe my third attempt at sending something to the list will work. Maybe I'll
give up. I'm beginning to get pretty po'd with AOL.
Re:the chat:
Can I modestly say the chat was one of the best ever? Unfortunately AOL was
doing the crash & burn on a number of people including myself. I have to
reconstruct the chat log. Anyone who logged it please (PLEASE!) send me any
pieces you have. I'll get it up as soon as possible.

Chat's are planned for the first Tuesday of every month. That makes the next
one Feb the 4th.

Our special guest for the chat was Rosanne Cash, one of those other
underappreciated national treasures like John. Also dropping in was John
Jennings, guitarist/producer extraordinaire (Mary Chapin Carpenter, John
Gorka). It was great to have them there.

Welcome to the list Mr Jennings. We're glad to have you.

As for Wingless Angels, John may not care for it but it surely is one of my
favorite albums. Josie, Some Kind of Love, Rose Water, Mazatlan, Big Horse,
and the lustful Summer Child.. Bits (little itty itty bits) of the production
I could quibble with if I had to, but this album is definately one of the
goodies. One of the ones I had to purchase several copies of... you know,
lend it to a friend and they won't let go. Wear out the grooves, time to
replace...

From:	rcaplow@decisive.com (Randi Caplow)

Someone just mentioned doing a best-of-john poll.
I shouldn't because I dont' have the time, but I can't resist. I just facilitated the poll for the Al
Stewart mailing list, using the software of the company I work for (the software I test) called
Decisive Survey. It automatically collects & tabulates the results, which I could send to Michelle
to post. If you guys are interested, you can visit www.decisive.com/randi/boap.htm to see what
the al stewart poll looks like on the web. It can also be sent out via e-mail. For the AS folks, they
wanted to respond both ways, so they do. Someone else will have to come up with the content
and send it to me. I'll plug it into the software and collect the results.
Whoever's interested in coordinating can mail me personally or post your interest to the list.
PS web experts, I didn't have time to make this poll shorter and prettier, I'd probably optimize the
HTML form a little better for you folks.

a little ticked at AOL. Couldn't get on until past midnite yesterday. They say
they're spending 250 million on new servers and modems, etc. We'll see. . .

Hope some of our AOL crowd caught enough dialogue to archive it for us in

Speaking of John Jennings, if you're out there John, I went searching for
your CD last Tuesday (the Ice reported street date) and searched in vain.
Was it delayed or does the city the size of Colorado Springs not get
Vanguard distribution? Never found the last John McKuen CD either and he
lives in Colorado. Looking forward to it, John. And despite what that one
reviewer said about your guitar work on the last MCC CD--the usual splendid
job.

BTW, hated Wingless Angels when it came out. . . then became one of my
favorites. As for Trancas, the beauty of the CD--hit the delete when Rocky
Top comes on and you have a perfect CD (sorry, John). And don't mention
those drum machines. I mentioned those in the book, The Kingston Trio on
Record, and he didn't appreciate my comment at all. :)

Whoever suggested checking out the new JS page, thanks!

( Was it you, Michelle?) Really nice job, with an excellent bio. The
chronology is the best organized that I"ve seen. And a very gracious tribute
by John's favorite American artist, James Wyeth: "John Stewart has
achieved in song what I attempt to paint". Considering all the artistic acclaim
Mr. Wyeth has achieved, that 's a pretty heavy compliment.

Has anyone heard the soundclips from this page? I can't because my machine
is not yet configured for RealAudio 3.0. Would love to know what parts they
selected from the five songs -- Miracle Mile, Sing My Heart Away, Bringing
Down the Moon from Live at the Turf Inn and Dreamers on the Rise and Chilly
Winds from the C/Winds album.

I see where NOMA(Natl Online Music Alliance) has an order form
and pricing, where you can order on-line. Uh uh!! John, do they give
you your fair share on this?
I don't care how convenient online buying is "suppose" to be . . . I'm
sticking with my 30 years of loyalty to the man. . . and continue giving my
money to Homecoming.
                           **********************************************
One final thought -- when, in the process of trying to convert another
friend or to over to John"s music, and for some reason his songs haven't yet
hit home, and they still wonder what John has been doing for work the past
three decades, why not just download this home page, and Clacks Cellar
great looking page, make copies and hand them out. If all this doesn't add
to the JS conversion ratio, either find new friends. . . or just accept the fact
that a few things in life were never meant to be. . !

Again thanks for the great site, I'm really not trying to be THAT

          Resume (In brief):

1963-1967 Stewart sings with the Kingston Trio, taking lead on one of
their biggest hits, "The Reverend Mr. Black."

     **IMHO - C. Three years should be mentioned (1958 - 1961)**

     **K. Trio years are actually 1961 - 1967**

1967 - after leaving the Trio, Stewart writes the Monkees' hit
     "Daydream Believer."

1968 Stewart and Buffy Ford campaign with Robert Kennedy and record
their first - and until now, only - album together, Signals through
     the Glass.

     1978 - A Rolling Stone critics poll lists Stewart's '69 solo debut
California Bloodlines as #36 of the top 200 albums of all time.

1970-1980 - A succession of classic recordings, hovering between folk,
country, and rock - years before "Americana" becomes a marketing
     buzzword.

1980 - Stewart's songs "Gold," and "Midnight Wind" from his top 5
album Bombs Away Dream Babies chart in the top 10.

**"Gold" was top 10 (5) - "Midnight Wind" and "Lost Her in the Sun
     were top 30**

1986 -Another masterpiece, Punch The Big Guy, is released and garners
     31/2 stars from Rolling Stone.

1992 - Rosanne Cash sends Stewart's "Runaway Train" to #1 on the
     country charts.

     ** I think it was 1988 for Rosanne's hit**

1993 - 1996 Joan Baez records Stewart's "Sweet Dreams" on her Grammy
Nominated Play Me Backwards album. Stewart duets with Nanci Griffith
on his song "Sweet Dreams" on her Little Love Affairs album, in
addition to releasing several more of his own acclaimed albums.

** Joan's cover was of "Strange Rivers" (a typo I'm sure) , "Sweet
Dreams" was on Little Love Affairs long before - '89 or earlier I'm
     guessing**

Dear Bloodlines friends:

I hope you don't mind a short note which is totally off the subject, but I
wanted to share some good news with my Bloodliner friends.
I'm going on a trip to Missouri this coming Monday.....and I'm goin to be
gone for a week, with no computer or emai <sob>
The reason for the trip, you ask? Well, I'm an adopted child (very happily
so, at 3 days old), and I have recently found my BIRTH MOM and I'm going to
Missouri to meet her.

Being raised an only child, finding out that I have 2 half brothers is quite
a thrill also.

Birth mom and I have become acquainted over the phone, with conversations
about once a week for a couple of months. She's a lovely person and I'm
looking forward to meeting her. She was thrilled that i found her, also.

This is ONE of those stories, which seems to have the potential for a very
happy "ending" . I just wanted to share that with my friends here, since
we've all gotten to know each other fairly well. :))))

Wish me luck (I'm taking AMTRAK, since I don't fly) and I'll be in
Independence, MO...(anyone live in or near there?) and I'll see you all
when I return a week from Monday.

Take care****

Nancy,

Warm and Heartfelt congradulations! Right now I am listening to "
Dreamers On The Rise" on the "Neon Dreams" live CD. I'm not sure why,
but it sounds right at this time! I have an adopted brother. Our family
has always felt that when you are adopted you didn't just happen but you
were chosen. He didn't have to be part of the family, we wanted him to
be part of the family. I rarely think of him as adopted except when I am
reminded of how good it is to be such a wanted member of the family. How
realy lucky you are to have two mothers! The rest of us are still lucky
to have one! I don't know why you don't fly, I do, but the train is the
greatest way to travel if you can take the extra time. Have a great
trip, a wonderful meeting with your Mom, and thanks for sharing this with
us!

Dear Nance,

Congratulations, and have a great and enlightening trip!

Speaking of discovering one's birth-parents, there was a heartwarming story
in the San Bernardino Sun yesterday about a local musician who found out,
after 30 years, that his birth - fater is David Crosby (Byrds/CSN). James
Raymond met his real dad for the first time two years ago, when his father
was in the hospital awaiting a liver transplant.

Tonight James Raymond is performing at The Coach House in Capistrano , with
his dad, for the very first time. They say he sounds exactly like his dad.
Isn't it interesting that he grew up to be a singer - sogwriter not even
knowing of his heritage?

By the way, with this being the 40th anniversary year of the Kingston

with the current Trio (Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, George Grove). Is this
for real? I'd love to see a show that featured a solo set by John...a
set by the Trio...a set all together...(and maybe John and Nick teaming

Am I dreaming or could it happen?

In replying to the 'feeling of a unique togetherness' (at least that's how I
perceive all of this) as commented on by the past three postings. . .

I'm right now sitting here, with the tv in the corner, showing VH1's
Saturday night The Rock & Roll Picture Show - "Monterry Park", with
various groups of the mid-late 60s in concert. The best images, tho, are
the fans. . . everywhere - standing, sitting, milling around - a cast of
thousands all drawn to one location. . . and each other. . . by the music.
A community of friends, if only for a weekend in time.

I also just received AOL's Tour Guide (instruction manual), where the
author, Tom Lichty, in his opening chapter, comments about the online
service being much more than computers and data bits. He speaks of its
members in terms of a community.
He talks also about the future - and how the internet, and this community -
could go on forever. A community of friends, if only for an infinity of
time.

Tom states ". . . we all discover the true soul of AOL, and that soul is
its people".
Every performer at Monterrey would have told you likewise about their music.

And I'm also a member of this electronic mailing list - Bloodlines. And it too
is more than computers, modems and data bits. It's about a concert, one that
has been performing for thirty years or more. But this mailing list goes
beyond modems and music. It's what Janis Joplin and Jimmy Hendrix were
singing about.. . .what Tom Lichty writes about - - - it's the people who really
make it. People sharing a common interest, all interconnected, brought
together by a man and his music.

I believe John would tell us that the true soul of every song he has ever
written and sung is its people. And some of those people are us here on this
electronic mailing list, all interconneted, all listening to the music. . .
all sharing. Part of our soul with John's songs, part of John's soul with
our lives. . . "the choices of the future, the sins of the past". A
community of friends, if only for our own lifetime.
                                  -----------------------------------------
Hey, it's getting late, and there's dinner waiting for me and mine at a great
Mexican restaurant over on Scottsdale Road. . .

am a man who likes backup. Lounging at the checkout counter was an old,
grizzled local rock musician--about my age, 45. The elderly clerk said,
"those JS albums have been waiting there for you a long time". The musician
said "Joe, this is good stuff, I didn't know you had any of this". It was a
great moment.

I really like Wingless Angels, too. It was the third JS album I ever
bought, right after the two DB albums, so it was quite a shock, especially
side 2. But it remains one of my favorites.

There is a sense of belonging that is central to all people. We need to
have affiliation with others, so it seems the 'Bloodlines' has created a
unique forum for Stewartistas to bond with similarly minded people. Very
few individuals that I meet in a day-to-day setting (besides the fact I
teach 4th grade) can understand the deep sense of meaning that John
Stewart's songs have for me, but thanks to Michele and the rest of
'Bloodlines' I can always read some missive from a kindred spirit.
Thanks for filling my e-mail box.

Nancy,
Our two kids are adopted from El Salvador (Zellie, 15) and Colombia (Carlos,
11). We are sort of searching for Zellie's birth mother, at least we went
to her hometown and have futher ideas.

Good luck. Guess you have been listening to "Missouri Birds."
