From: Bluesy33@aol.com
Down here in Texas, Townes Van Zandt was well known among music lovers--as he
was from Fort Worth and played here often even though he lived in Nashville.
He was referred to as one of Texas Musics Holy Trinity--the other two being
Guy Clark and Billy Joe Shaver. He was scheduled to play at Cactus Jacks in
Austin later this month. The owner, a long time friend of his, said that
"Townes always thought it was his club" and that they were keeping the
schedule as is "just in case he shows up".
Jerry Jeff Walker was quoted in the paper here in San Antonio as saying "I've
been expecting a call like this on Townes for years, and today I got it." He
also said words to the effect that Townes found his art deep within himself.
Guy Clark, his close friend, was at his home when he died. Townes young
daughter ran from Townes room telling Guy and Townes family that "Daddy is
having a fight with his heart". When they reached his room he had already
passed away. He had just come home from the hospital after hip surgery.
They believe he had a heart attack.

Thanks Mike. I read this at about 11:20 PM Pacific time, signed off and
darted over to the TV just in time to hear ``Dreamers on the Rise.'' A very nice
version, I might add. By Chuck McDermott, I believe someone said. And then
the twin classic lines: ``I wrote that...'' and ``... my sister says I'm as good
as John Denver.''
But then TBS edited out the ending of the wet T-shirt contest, which I felt
damaged the artistic integrity of the film. So I went to bed. -- Don

I'll just listen to the "ideal" and "pure" version that I love so much.

I bought Townes' CD No Deeper Blue (Sugar Hill label) after John recommended
the song "Marie", from that CD, in The Finger, following the tour with Townes
and company.
Dave's description of that tour, on this BBS, was a wonderful insight, for
all of us who couldn't really be there.
"Marie" is the saddest song.
Didn't know Townes' work all that well. May try to catch up, now.

In addition, Townes came from a historic Texas family -- Van Zandt County is
named for Isaac Van Zandt, a Republic of Texas congressman and ambassador to
Washington.
His "Tecumsah Valley" was recorded by Nanci Griffith on "Other Voices, Other
Rooms." On the video of her live performance of those songs, Townes was
interviewed, and he said he loved her version of the song; in fact, he said
he liked anyone's covers of any of his songs. That demostrates a humility we
could all emulate.

About three years ago on the (unfortunately defunct) American Music Shop
program on TNN one of the best shows had Nanci with several "Other Voices"
and my favorite performance from that program (and of Nanci) was Nanci &
Townes dueting on Tecumseh Valley. I may be mistaken but I think that song
was written back around 69 or 70 and it will truly be a timeless classic and
part of Townes legacy.

There's a nice new collection of Townes' songs by a singer (from Texas, I
think) named Jonell Moser. It's on Winter Harvest. She's rocked 'em up a bit,
missing some of the nuances and guts, but it's still worth checking out. I'd
love to hear others' suggestions about what other Townes music they'd
recommend.
Great to her all those details of the tour with Townes, Dave. Also, "Pancho"
was done by Emmylou Harris, who did a nice job with it, tho it's really (at
the risk of sounding sexist) a "man's" song, IMHO.

There's a teeny tiny little "town" in Arizona, called "Hope" also. It's
actually not a town, more of a "wide spot in the road" with a gas
station/store, and a couple of trailer parks for snow birds. On either end
of "town", there is a sign as you're leaving that says "You're now BEYOND
HOPE"

It's good that any potential buyers understand what these tapes aren't; and

I pulled this off a message board. I know AOL has been having troubles and
maybe this will help some of you. Since the AOL browser is so frustrating I
keep another browser ready to go and don't have any troubles running it over
AOL.. For those without that option, maybe this will help:
If any of you are having trouble to connect to the web from AOL and get a
message that you are not a known user or a message that says system failed to
connect there is a glitch with the AOL server that goofs up your socket.
You don't need to know what that means, you just need to correct it. For
AOL30 for Win3.1, under Prefereces/WWW look for PURGE CACHE ( I think that's
in advanced) and purge your cache.
If you use AOL for Win95, while off line (must be offline or it does not 100%
work)
Use MY COMPUTER and navigate to your windows folder. look for a sub folder
called HISTORY. Open it and click once on the top file press Ctrl End to
hightlight all the files and then delete them all. This will also clear your
history folder but it fixes the problem. It will not work if you simply try
and purge your cache with MSIE.
MACS, you also need to purge your cache if you have the same problem. I've
never done it on a MAC so I can't be of much help.

What ever happened to the Route 66 caravan tour of last summer? Did it
happen and I missed it or was it cancelled? If it was, I hope it will
happen later this year. It sounded like a great time!

Aaargh! A new lower price for the videos! Merely a week or so after I
ordered mine!
But guess what - I got video 1 and I don't care - it was worth the
original price (besides, Ive never minded paying a higher price knowing
that the money was going directly to my favorite performers rather than
some conglomerate that wouldn't promote it right anyway)
Video 2 will be on its way I'm sure I will feel the same. Order these
(and Rough Sketches too) - its worth it!
And if "The Road" from Sketches doesn't have your heart beating for a
time that seems long ago...with sweat pouring from your brow in shared
recognition...you're not alive!

Many years ago I heard John sing a song called "Cooler Water, Higher
Ground".
What I would like to know is, did John write this song and has he
recorded it?
Hope someone can answer this
Thanks

With the loss of TBTAMC, Lost Songs 2 sounds very appealing.
When everyone started listing the songs they'd like to hear in
concert, most seemed to have something listed that I'd never
heard of. Most of them are probably on Rough Sketches that I haven't
yet got, but even their titles sound evocative, (is that the right
word), especially "Cooler Water, Higher Ground". The very title
brings such strong images.

I wouldn't think of asking for a rebate! As I said in the previous
posting, and I hope all of your fans agree, it is well worth the price
of admission, whatever it may be. Tape 2 arrived today and is phenomenal
again (I am about midway through)
I think its important to realize that your fans out here often go to
absurd lengths to obtain previously unreleased gems from you...if that
can be done and can directly support you (or whatever performer) rather
than lining the pockets of the big company guys, I'm all for it.
Rather, I'll think of those of us who started the video ball buying as
trailblazers...making it possible for others to see the tapes.
Mr. Stewart you are responsible for some of the best music EVER. Thanks
for sharing some of your "private" stash with the rest of us!

I wholeheartedly agree with everything Steve writes.....
I am, however, very saddened by the news that TBTAMC won't be released.
John, what are the chances that some copies JUST FOR US here, might be
released? By special arrangement only, or something of that nature? I
understand your hesitance, but I think you underestimate the loyalty and
love your fans have for your music, in ANY form. Whether it's "rough"
around the edges, it's still a part of your "soul" and songwriting that
we've all come to love.
Just my humble opinion... :))))

Rebates are not the issue. The issue is that few people would take the
time to seek out a less expensive provider and to pass the savings on to
the buyer. Thanks for giving the extra effort. I am enjoying my copies
at the original price. Just glad to have them.

This evening I went into a record store, 2 miles from my home in
Milwaukie Oregon (yes Oregon), that I almost forgot exsisted.
It's been in business owned and run by the same couple for 37 years and
it's now the oldest record store in the Portland OR area. I bought
most of my vinyl collection there as a kid. A real past blast, it has
rows of new and used 45's, LP's, sheet music and strings, just like
record stores used to have 20 or 30 years ago. I found and bought a
new copy of an RSO 45, Gold/Midnight Wind.
They still have a used copy of Gold/Commin' Out Of Nowhere as well as
an original WB release of Lonesome Picker Rides Again. A few years ago
I found a mint copy of "Signals" for my collection. This place is rich
with unusual musical odds and ends. If anyone wants info, e-mail me
and I will pass on the phone number and address. Did I read sometime
ago that the "Blonds" CD is out of print and no longer available? If
Homecomeing can no longer get it, I stumbled across 1 or 2 copies in
record stores in Portland OR recently.

Hey John-
I paid the original price. If I understood your message correctly, you
found a less expensive means of duplicating, so you are passing on the
savings now. I don't see how I can ask for a rebate, since my tapes had a
higher production cost.
I would have been in favor of you keeping the price the same and you get
more! If anybody ever deserved more for the quality of their music, it would
certain find you at the top of the list!!

Date: 97-01-08
From: fdjong@xs4all.nl (Frits de Jong)
Now we have a 'band' with 81 different names, 263 songs we want te hear, a
lot of unrecorded songs for 'The Lost Songs Volume 2' (4cd box please), the
Route '66 tour and 17 home concert over the States, a few new videos, and 782
albums of other artist we like (and this is only from the fans on Internet).
Not bad, hope that John needs no much sleep. Can i also 'drop' a few things:
Concertplace: 'cause i live in Netherland and till now have seen (10 times)
John in concert at the UK then i now suggest that if he's again in
England/Scotland, he may go visit Paris again for a short holiday with Buffy,
but after that he comes to Amsterdam for (his first?) concert on the
continent of Europe.
Songs: In my opinion is Wingless Angels better than John self says that it is
("...we had too much fun in the studio"), o.k. we do it over, so do a whole
live show with these album tracks (Sure, this comes on CD... 'Wingless Live!).
Band: Now we know what John want, i will not suggested others, so what we
think of guest appearance at each show : Victoria Williams; Ani DiFranco;
Sarah McLachlan, Emmylou Harris, Lee Clayton (on 'Lady and theOutlaw'
/'Ladies Love Outlaws'), Bruce Cockburn and just for commercial success we
take also Bruce Springsteen. (who in Amsterdam...?....maybe Candy Dulfer on
Sax).
What i mean is, whatever happened, hope that John is going on with the things
he liked, thanks for all the music.
