It is still heavily under construction but you may as well see what

running soon.

Go to Bob's Basement at

Bob,

Congradulations on a well done web site! I have it bookmarked and it
will be visited regularly. Thanks for the great info you have provided,
especially the date of the PBS "Kingston Trio and Friends". I was
viewing it the other night and was wondering when it originally aired. I
also have a video of a later TV program with John and Nick hosted by Judy
Collins. Before John leads everyone in "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" he
said something to the effect: "If you don't know this one, you're not
American." It took place in San Francisco. Does anyone know the year?

I'm pretty sure it was 1988. You're talking about the one that had Bobby
McFerrin in it too? It was a live broadcast. I have the broadcast date
written down somewhere but it isn't handy.

Subj:	Another Welcome to Bloodlines -Reply
Date:	97-02-26
From:	jalderson@journals.uchicago.edu

Well... hello all.
I didn't realize this was a chat thing; for my birthday, I treated myself to
a copy of John's "Write from the Heart," and in the materials that came with
it was this e-mail address which said "for information about John..." Didn't
realize that there would be people out there, and have never done this sort
of thing before, but it seems harmless enough...

SO, thank you for the welcome! I am a singer and lyricist and play harmonica
a little. My day job is in scholarly publishing. I became acquainted with John
Stewart's work in1985, when I first met the man who is now my husband. He
played "Phoenix Concerts" for me and I was HOOKED -- as were all of our
friends who heard it. My husband and his 3 brothers (2 of them musicians)
have been long-time Stewart fans, so you could say I married into it.

We were convinced for years that, since we admire John so much, he must
have given up touring long ago, and we would never actually see him perform.
Imagine, then, my surprise last summer when an acquaintance told me they'd
heard on the radio that John would be playing at the Abbey Pub that night. The
spouse was out of the country at the time (bad luck for him!), but I rustled up a
friend and headed over to the show. It was a small crowd, because the Bulls
were in a playoff game, but was a breathtaking experience nonetheless. John
is a real showman. I chatted up a guy who turned out to be Dave Batty
(a true sweetheart), and he asked me if I had any requests. I asked for
"Mazatlan," and they actually PLAYED it! Also, I almost randomly bought
"Deep in the Neon," which turned out to be very similar to the show I saw that
night, so the spouse got a listen after all. It was truly a magical event from
start to finish, and it was eerie to be, for once in my life, in a roomful of people
who not only know who John is, but know more about him than I do.

Thanks again for the welcome; I think this will be fun.

Welcome, indeed, from another Midwestern outpost of Stewartistas (well,
actually there are two of us at my office I know of ... a colleague of mine
told me of his love of John's music after I entered a snippet review of
"Punch The Big Guy" in a CD roundup for our newsletter).
Jane, it would be terrific if we could think of a way to bring John to
either Chicago or St. Louis. Does the Abbey still exist? There's a handful
of potential sites here in St. Loo ... but I'd head for your town in a
heartbeat if a concert were arranged there (never made the trek for a
Cards-Cubs game but I WOULD for a show by John ... now THAT's loyalty!).
I'm in the public relations field and could help promote it either town.
In any event, glad you're on board ... and yes, it IS fun.

John Prine has none (0)

Jackson Browne has none (0)
Elvis has one (0)
Helen Reddy has nine(9)

Mark--Having spent almost my entire life in California, I've been fortunate
to see John in concert more times than I can remember. To me, the two "Neon
Videos" offered by John and Luke Stewart, "rough cut" though they may be,
capture the magic very well. (And, of course, "Phoenix Concerts" in my view
is the best live album ever made.) You can check earlier postings on this
site or, I would think, e-mail Luke c/o Angelbravo re how to get copies of
the videos. (I wonder if you'd have to have them converted to a
UK-compatible format to view them in England, however.)

Merle,

Like you, I am outraged that people like John, CSN, ect. have never won a
grammy. Now Pete Seegar is a cool dude and has certainly penned his share
of remarkable tunes, but I kind of thought John's recent recording of
traditional folk songs should have at least been listed as a contender for a
grammy. I'll bet the esteemed members of the Academy never even heard, or
heard of John's recording. Who decides what recordings they get to hear
anyway? We should endeavor to find out and make sure that some of the
Academy members get a chance to hear ROUGH SKETCHES, which should be eligible
for next year's Grammys since it is due to be released soon on CD. I would
hope that FOLK ERA would make this recording available to the members of the
Academy, as well as promo copies for all relevant radio stations. Does
anyone else have thoughts about this?

The Grammys are a very political event: large record companies have many
votes. Just like the Academy Awards, people vote in blocs. The recording
industry rewards commercial success with Grammys. NARAS, the organization
that runs the awards for the industry, has tried to get "hip" by
establishing a two-tier selection system. NARAS names a committee of
industry insiders and tastemakers to oversee the nominations. It is
empowered to throw out nominees, even if they garner large votes. Again,
this was in response to record companies voting in blocs for nominees: NARAS
considered the Tony Bennett Grammy's two years ago a debacle, engineered by
SONY. Thus, NARAS has a group to judge who is cool and hip and marketable to
the (young) masses. The NARAS voters are presented with a slate of of
approved nominees, virtually all from major labels.

NARAS has rewarded Ramblin Jack Elliot, who is on Red House Records, a small
label in my town of St. Paul. Pete Seeger richly deserves it for his
incredible work. IF Folk Era can publicize the Rough Sketches release and
get some good national publicity, and we hound our local reviewers to review
Rough Sketches and our stores to stock it, then JS could be positioned for a
nomination. Sadly, folk music is viewed as a niche, but conversely, that
means that the tastemakers don't worry about record sales!

SO: let' s gear up for the Long March on the Neon Road. . NARAS might have a
website, so I will do some checking.

Hi Jane, and welcome aboard from another Chicago Stewartista!
My wife (who also married into the Cult) and I were at that Abbey
concert...so you were the one who requested Mazatlan. We've been to
quite a few JS concerts in Chicago over the years but had never heard
him play Mazatlan...one of my all time favorites.
One thing that I remember from that concert was John periodically
stopping to allegedly listen to the Bulls game on a walkman radio.
Now that we have Bloodlines perhaps we Midwesterners can organize more
more more JS concerts in Chicago, St Louis, Faribault MN and elsewhere.

Thanks for posting the article to the list. I have read it and sent in my
mail. The truth is I really would like to read the next installment, which I
assume will describe the actual production of Hee Haw in Nashville, so that
is what I told the editor. George is a very talented writer.
Regarding the tribute tape, since people seem to be responding favorably, how
'bout we get the show on the road. Go ahead and start recording your songs
and when you're done, send 'em to me. I'll grope my way through the
coordination of getting them compiled and duplicated; again, as long as I can
recoup my costs by people on the list buying a copy for about $3-$5. Let's
set a tentative deadline for around end of June (would that give people
enough time?), or until I have enough songs to fill a tape. If anyone wants
to volunteer to help out, please do so!
Another question. On my other list, there were a number of aspiring graphic
designers submitting competing entries for the cover design. Do we want to do
that here or do you just one one aspiring designer (like myself) to just run
with it? What we do with the cover also depends on how much we all want to
pay for the printing of it; i.e, 4-color or black and white. Thoughts
appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Jane, (and all the other newcomers who have logged on lately) welcome
aboard. Just a note to all you Midwest Stewartistas...Our fearless agent
GorDoom has booked John into Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield, WI (northern WI
on the shores of Lake Superior) on Aug 1st...the Trio plays there the
2nd...hmmm.

Anyway, Gordoom is booking dates in the midwest around this date....The Abbey
in Chicago, Wilbert's in Cleveland, Cafe Carpe in Ft Atkinson, are definite
maybes (details hopefully being worked out), with rumors of Minneapolis,
Columbus, Cincinnati, etc...if you have an idea or venue, our favorite agent
can be reached at Gordoom@aol.com

Also John will be playing McCabe's in Santa Monica on April 5th...a little
earlier than usual. Could it be we play LA twice in '97? I'll post a
complete itinerary in a couple of days as we might have more dates definite
by then.

Thanks alot!

I do know an entertainment lawyer who is active in NARAS and I am sure he
could give me the inside stuff on how things are done.

Coincidentally, I was in New York City earlier in the week for a
Grammy-related function. MTV(!) sponsored the 4th annual fundraiser for
Rock the Vote, an organization that gets young people to register to vote
(and it helped pass the motor voter bill in 1993). My brother-in-law,
Patrick Lippert was the executive director. He died in 1993 and since 94
Rock the Vote has given the Lippert Memorial Award to musicians active in
politics, voter registration, etc. My wife and I have attended these events
and they are a mix of fun and amazement (seeing all the hip record company
executives trying to out-cool each other.) This year Sheryl Crow was one of
the people recoginized with the award. We met Sheryl three years ago, right
before she hit it big. She is a good person and does many good things aside
from music.

ANYWAY, the JS connection strikes again: A fellow in real estate from San
Antonio attended the party. We were talking and I mentioned JS. He went
nuts. He said he had booked JS at his college in Arizona in the 70s and JS
had given his fellow student booker his cowboy hat. Still a prized
possession. He lamented that he couldnt find JS CDs anywhere and wondered
if they were available. I told him about Homecoming and Neon Dreams and he
and his wife got very excited. SO this weekend I mail a spare copy of the
Homecoming catalog to Dan. I think Dave better get ready for a big order.
I think he is a potential bloodliner: when I said "Seattle, Mister" he
started laying down JS's rap word for word.

Anyway, I will start exploring. I think JS could (and should) be awarded a
Grammy. It may be for one album but I would view it as a lifetime
achievement award myself. (And that is how we promote JS: not just an album
but a lifetime of great music and inspired creativity.)

So long from St. Paul

Fred
