Subj:	It's about time...
Date:	97-02-15
From:	GeryJarcia@aol.com

It took me a while, but I have finally moved over to bloodlines. the postings
on AOL were getting thin & I missed you all.
Time to catch up: Top three Favorite lyrics: 1) 'I was standing in
line at the Bank of America, nobody spoke they were in the house of God'.
2): 'They listened to the water, that awful noise, and they put away the
dreams that were meant for little boys.' 3) I live in California, I can
look out at the ocean, the silver blue Pacific, it is always there to see.
But I'm so busy working that I don't have time to see it, it's just knowing
that it's there that means alot to me....
Maestro's: Great dinner, Great show, great company, John as personable as
ever. Nice chat with Dave before the show. Dave, I hope you appreciate how
much more fun these events are when you can reach out to the performers. I
had a nice chat with John Hoke at Sweetwater, and we can always count on
seeing you doing the P.R. before & after. Thanks for that. The music:
John always picks the right tunes, in the right order. Darwins army has
alot of energy. New things (even if they are old things) always raise the
adrenaline.
Ron/clack, it was a pleasure to spend the evening with you and your son.
Thanks for the dollar, next time I hit the ATM before the show. Looking
forward to the photo. Second time will be the charm. I have babbled on
long enough. See ya Later.

Subj:	Inland Pacific Northwest is Waiting!
Date:	97-02-15
From:	MFinleyCS@aol.com

Speaking for eastern Washington state, western Montana, and northern Idaho,
I'd just like to say, Hey! How about US? A couple of years ago John, Buffy,
and Dave made it to, of all places, Moses Lake, WA, so I drove the two hours
east from my home in Spokane to be there. Now how about Spokane or Coeur
d'Alene? We need a JS concert in the worst way, having NEVER had one, as far
as I know. Whatchasay, big guy?

The livable side of Washington state is also waiting.

(Just a little joke there Mitch. Next thing you know we'll be swapping
Husky-Cougar insults.)

On the other hand, it does seem an awfully long time between visits for
either side the wet or sunny side of Washington. I moved here because it
met my checklest of heaven: big white mountain, cool summers, Redhook
Brewery, John Stewart concert every six months.

Except now it's been about 18 months. So, hey! Seattle, mister. Or even
Moses Lake.-- Don

Date:	97-02-15
From:	donfish@sttl.uswest.net (D&L Ruiz/Peeveyroo)

In the wake of last week's discussion about ``Cannons in the Rain,'' it
belatedly dawned on me what a beautiful set of words those are, and how
nicely it
works as an album title.

Which got me thinking about JS album titles.

There are plenty of JS albums that take their names from songs:
``California Bloodlines,'' ``Willard,'' ``Cannons,'' ``Wingless Angels''
``Fire in the Wind'' ``Escape to Arizona'' etc.

There are some tweeners: ``The Lonesome Picker Rides Again,'' which
includes the song ``Some Lonesome Picker.'' `` Blondes,'' which includes
``Tall Blondes.'' ``Bullets Through the Hour Glass,'' which is a lyric from
one of its songs: ``Looking for Jack.''

There are some that function as easily understandable labels: ``Phoenix
Concerts'' ``Secret Tapes,'' ``The Trio Years,'' ``American Sketches,''
``Rough Sketches,'' etc.

But then there are the others with names that seem to have dropped from the
sky:

Bombs Away Dream Babies

Dream Babies Go Hollywood

Trancas

Revenge of the Budgie

Neon Beach

Deep in the Neon

Punch the Big Guy

Airdream Believer

Bandara

I've heard ``Bombs Away Dream Babies'' has some sort of whimsical tie to
the have-a-hit-or-you're-gone threat he was working under at the time. That
``Punch the Big Guy,'' is credited to Luke Stewart, but I've never heard in
what context the line was delivered. I know Trancas is a club and a road
and a canyon, but I don't know why it's an album title. And I've heard that
``Airdream Believer'' was originally going to be ``Johnny's Time
Machine'' (which would have been his all-time cool title) until the label
wanted the more sales-friendly ``Daydream Believer.'' So I smell
compromise. But still: ``Airdream Believer?''

Anyway, if anyone's able to flesh out any of the stories behind these album
titles, I'd appreciate hearing.

``Well, maybe, but I don't know, so anyway...''

From:	DBATTI@aol.com

I got to meet Gene Clark in Nashville when John was playing at some street
festival...Nashville Lights I believe it was called. It was right around the
time of "Punch the Big Guy" and we did a set where Rosanne sat in...I think
Steve Earle played right after us and Gene Clark and Carla Olson (of Textones
fame) played before us. John Hoke asked him about some words he couldn't
decipher in the Dylan song "My Back Pages" (Gene sang lead on it)...he said
he couldn't understand what Dylan was saying either...some things never
change.

 I met a Byrd...cool.

From:	lcfoster@sdcoe.k12.ca.us (Laurie (and Bob , Katie and Matt) Foster)

In listening to Live At the Turf Inn I keep asking myself is the audience
asleep?? The few times you can hear the reaction it sounds like just a
handfull of folks (as compared to electricity you can hear on the Phoneix
Concert album) Now maybe it's just where they placed the recording mikes
but it's the least responsive JS audience I've seen or heard.

You're right about Airdream Believer. It was a compromise.
Shanachie wanted Day Dream Believer, and I wanted Johnny's Time Machine. We
compromised on Airstream Believer. It turned out that Airstream wouldn't let
us use the name so it was altered enough to get by with it.
Trancas is a canyon and a road. It was also where we recorded the album.
Revenge of the Budgie was named for Nick Reynolds nick name in the Trio. The
Budgie and his return to recording.
Neon Beach was named for the Trancas bar and resturant where it was recorded,
with it's neon sign right across the street from the Malibu beach.
Deep in the Neon was recorded at McCabes Folk
club in Santa Monica ca. In the heart of the neon signs of So. Cal.
Bandera is the last name of one of my alias Diego Bandera.

Also, there's something about "Revenge of the Budgie" as a title. The only

Or something like that. Can anyone enlighten us?

Dave, if there's the slightest chance that the Trio or John is going to take
Big Top Chittagua beyond the "Hmmm..." stage, *please* let us know ASAP, as a
pilgrimage is hard to organize on short notice.

Thanks.

Mitch, it might be a good place to put a house concert, as there are two
"anchor dates" on either side of it. Transportation, etc., would be a lot
easier for John, Dave, Buffy, or whoever, as they're already in the area.

If I can help you with this in any way let me know.

Keep 'em flyin'.

Oops. Just reviewed the itinerary. Sorry, Mitch, but I guess a date in the
NY-MA area might make more sense. Still like the idea of a house concert.
Still willing to help, etc. But somehow a coast-to-coast gig in the middle of
two New England dates probably is not practical.

Several come to mind. First there's the metaphoric phrase: "Shoot all
the wild horses and how will we ride?" Another, rather thought provoking
line is: "I wonder if a long time ago, somewhere in the Universe, they
watched a man named Adam walk upon the Earth?" From the same song
(Armstrong) I also like: "The rivers are gettin' dirty, the wind is gettin'
bad. War and hate are killin' off the only Earth we have ......" That's
all for now; I'm sure I'll think of some more, after I review my inventory.
                                                Keep it flyin' ,

Dave--Thanks for the update! I feel lucky to be here in Central NY. It took
me seventeen years to finally see John Stewart live. Now I can look forward
to my fifth show in about a year. BTW, will you be with him? How about
BuffY? Not to get greedy, but I've never seen Buffy live.

John--any chance i could convince you to sing "Comfort Me" in NY?????????

*MY* favorite lyric is simply "comfort me with shining stars."

first time I saw P,P,&M in 1962). I don't know where John is on that date,
but, hmmmmm...

More from that great song:

I look into the future
And I see myself
In the desert with an airstream*
And a mantra and a phone.
You come by to see me
And we play the VCR
And we stare at who we were
And not at who we are.

While channel surfing tonite, I caught the last 10 minutes or so of the 'new'
Monkees on ABC & yes Daydream Beleiver was one of the few 'oldies' they
resurrected. Not too bad, either. Good to know that given all the material
they have to choose from that it was one of the 5 or 6 that they performed.
I guess it shows that while they are still not funny, they do have some good
taste.

Where in Wisconsin is the tentative John Stewart event in August to be
held? Since I don't see a Minnesota listing and Wisconsin is within range
of family outing...

Also, I watched that Monkee event also and did enjoy Daydream Believer.
Over the years I have come to appreciate the Monkees a bit more than I did
in my youth. Some of their songs were ear candy, but they did introduce a
whole lot of people to some great songwriters (some of them almost in
John's league) Neil Diamond, Carole King, Harry Nillson...Mike Nesmith had
some wonderful songs as a Monkee and a solo artist. Find a copy of "Door
Into Summer" on a Monkess CD, or "What am I doing hanging round", or his
early solo albums. Not bad for a guy whose mom invented liquid paper.

I had just broken up with an Anne when "Cannons" came out. As with so many
of John's songs, "Anna on a Memory" occupies a special, permanent place in my
own little history. I think my favorite line is "You won't catch the sun,
but you can try"--a theme that came around again twenty years later ("It's up
to you and I to beat our arms against the sky, and keep it flyin'").

"Anna . . ." for me is a great example of how John's songs are absolutely
timeless--they just become more complex and classic as they age. Even the
most topical ones -- Last Campaign, Survivors, Armstrong, etc. -- still
crackle now.
