Thanks, John & Buffy, for your wonderful music in Williams Friday night.
I drove up with a friend from Prescott. Before Friday night, the last time
I saw John perform was with Nick & Bob at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in
1962. My God, 35 years ago. Songlines. Connections.

There's a British writer called Bruce Chatwin who, among other things,
wrote SONGLINES. He followed the aborigines across Australia tracing
imaginary, but real, songlines that tie the land together & lead people
home. You do that for us. I think Shelley (not Winters) called the
artist the Representative Man. And you are, you do, represent us.
The way you tied together your music, old & new, along with the history
of Route 66,& of course the unmentioned political connections & commitments,
& the images of dreams, angels (very like the German poet Rilke, except he
didn't play the 12-string, & never heard of Roswell), reached out & held us.
You say what we can't say, but feel. Your words are ours. There's a mystic
bond between us, the songlines you've crisscrossed America with, reminding
us of our roots & responsibilities.

 Thank you.

Since this is a John Stewart mailing list, I presume most of us share an
interest in both music and wingless angels. Therefore I think it's on topic
to mention that I'm just back from a movie called ``Brassed Off,'' which
immediately jumps into my Top 10 movies of all time. More to the point,
it's the best movie I can recall that weaves together the issues of music
and human worth. It's English, and probably isn't playing in too many
theaters or in all areas of the U.S., but if it is playing in your area, it
might be worth checking into. A wonderful, wonderful film. -- Don

WOW. I just heard Chris Berman on ESPN's Baseball Tonight refer to John Stewart
and "Lost Her In The Sun" in relation to a blown play in the L.A. - San Diego
game. You just never know where AB's name will come up next.

Anybody know Chris?? Maybe he's a closet JS fan. Heard that too,
and I jumped up and yelled at my wife like it was the last game of the
World Series.

Any sports fan with cable TV knows of Chris Berman, the ESPN SportsCenter
announcer who has made a name for himself by making up goofy nicknames for
athletes.

Well, I was watching SportsCenter on Sunday night when Berman was narrating
baseball highlights for the day. They showed a clip from the Dodgers-Padres
game in which one of the players misplayed a routine pop up. And this is
what Chris Berman said: ``He's like John Stewart: He lost her in the sun.''

It took me half a beat to even realize what he said. And then I was so busy
bagering my wife: ``Did you hear what he said? Did you hear what he said?
Did you hear what he said?'' etc., that I missed the context to a
reference soon after to something Berman said about ``Bloodlines.''

Did anyone hear what he said?

Two songs from my younger days go through my head and I have no idea what the
titles are or who recorded them. Can some kind Bloodliner help me out? Is
there a folk music web site or another mailing list I should go to?

This is what I remember of one of the songs:

Baby's feeling funny in the morning
Says she's got a lot on her mind
Nature didn't give her any warning
But she's feeling better about it all the time.

I let her do some of my laundry
And she slipped a few meals in between
The next thing I remember she was all moved in and I was buying her a washing
machine.

She's having trouble getting into her jeans.

This next song, I think, was recorded by Joan Baez:

He's the kind of guy goes to drive a Maserati puts the key in the wrong little
hole.

Thanks so much.

Bobbie,

The second song Is "Hard Lovin' Loser", written by either Richard or
Mimi Farina (Joan Baez's sister). I've never heard Joan sing it but I
know Judy Collins recorded it on her album, "In My Life".

BTW, Ron asked if he could post the 'chronicle' on the Cellar site - in the
Concerts Review section, and also asked if I had any more thoughts on the

It's like some old classroom assignment. What does John Stewart mean to
you?

He connects me to my younger self, growing up in the '50's & '60's, still
capable of being inspired, believing in the New Frontier & JFK, then seeing
him get blown away, starting to believe again in the promise of America to
heal itself, only to see Martin Luther King Jr. & RFK be cut down; STILL
believing I could make the difference that the Kennedys had spoken of so
eloquently & JS was singing about; joining the Peace Corps, believing I
could save the world, finding out I couldn't even save myself.

And here I am, looking out at the stars above Arizona, still capable,
thanks to the words of John Stewart, of being inspired anew, of believing.
And you all are out there, Bloodlines Folk, loyal to the dreams of your
younger selves, & the vision of the road running back through space & time,
connecting us, binding us together as a community of believers, despite
everything, in miracles & angels.

Being the net mongrel that I sometimes am, I search around every once in a
while on the net to see what is out there related to folk music. One of my
earliest discoveries was the Digital Tradition. At this website, literally
thousands of folk and blues songs have been cataloged with various major
versions listed. I have it linked off of the main page of Clack's Cellar. I
checked Roddy and the lyrics are there as well as a short sound file clip. No
folk fan interested in the lyrics of songs should miss the Digital Tradition.
And, if you find something is missing that you know about you are encouraged
to submit it. That is how the database got so huge, folks have submitted
their findings.

Clack's is at: http://members.aol.com/clackclack/rebeffa1.htm

The link (as well as other useful/interesting ones) is near the bottom of the
main page.

Very politically incorrect, these days (and those last two words are a

'For Everyman' (which also features the alternative - and superior IMHO -

Nanc,
Great posting on the Folk Opera - too bad we all couldn't be there.
Did you happen to see any camcorders in the audience?? I sugested to
AB some time back that the folk opera would make a good multi-media CD.
Those with CD players could listen to the music - those with PCCDs could =

hear the music, see the pictures and perhaps a short video clip or two.
I'm still jealous of all of you folks out west getting to see so much of
the Big Guy.
All I get is New England winters.

I'm glad I made a point about Rick Nelson - It looks like you all are as crazy
as I am. I noticed about 7 or 8 different RN cds yesterday at a record shop.
(hmmm.. I guess it's not really 'a record shop') All the hits and all of the stuff
with the Stone Canyon Band... I've got a very pecular RN CD made in Italy.
Along with the usual stuff it's got songs from Rio Bravo - one with Dean Martin
and Walter Brennan and one with a radio intro from John Wayne! Now that's
some strange!

Hi Nancy,
Fantastic job on the review of John's "Opera".....let us all hope that it
becomes available on video someday. After our conversation last week, how I
wish I would have changed the plans and made it over to see the show!!
Your outstanding review brings us all there, however. Nice job snagging the
poster! I picked-up soemthing equally as cool. Went to a Beatles Faire in
Mission Valley yesterday. Pete Best; Denny Laine etc. Tons of collectibles.
Anyway, I'm looking at a Ringo collection, and there in an 8X10 Black &
White glossy standing next to Ringo is JOHN STEWART!!! I fold back a paper
flap that was concealing the rest of the picture, and it reveals JS; Ringo
& Lily Tomlin standing behind the Smothers Brothers. On the paper flap it
says" KNBC original photo...Sept 28, 1975. SB Comedy Hour. I bought it for
$15.00.....suitable for framing.
Best Regards,
Merle

True - he also doesn't perform that song live any more and hasn't for
some time. Jackson's a very private person who wrote about meeting the
woman who would become his wife and the mother of his first son. She
later committed suicide. Jackson's 4th album "The Pretender" speaks to
this awful situation. I believe "Here Come Those Tears Again" was
co-written with his mother-in-law.

Hi all,

I called in a request to WCBE, the Americana station in
Columbus, Ohio. (614)821-9223 - request line or
(614)365-9223 - office. The DJ said he saw the John
Stewart CD on the Americana Charts but he thought it would
be "too mainstream". This is the same station which has been
playing Johnny Cash's new album to death.

If anyone has no qualms about dialing long distance, or who
lives in Columbus, I'd appreciate it if you could help me educate
this guy.

He did say he'd "take a look around" Whatever that means ;-)

I should clarify that the DJ is on weekdays between 11 and 3 pm Eastern time.
The station does have a pretty esoteric playlist, but they do play Americana.

They are now playing Ricki Lee Jones new album (the whole thing) it is the
featured album of the week, the do it every Monday, sounds great BTW,
before that they played Ween, John Gorka, David Gray, Mihalia Jackson, Buckwheat
Zydeco, plenty of others.

Tomorrow I'll try the morning DJ, She plays more "mainstream" folky music
like Kirsten Hall and the Indigo Girls. :-)

Yes. But after Nanc's post about the Opera, I'm wondering whether we might
not be lucky enough to eventually get a full-length conceptual video
including smaller pieces that could be released individually. (Remember
Mike Nesmith's "Elephant Parts"?). In any case, I'd love to see John put
his musical visual talents together. I can hardly wait for a chance to see
the Opera live, while holding my breath for the video.

Yes, the Trio box set will be available through Rediscover Music.
The catalogue featuring the box set should be showing up on people's
doorsteps later this month.

The first 10 CD set features only the Guard trio material. There
will be a second 10 CD set sometime next year of Stewart Trio
material. There will be a third set of "Trio Related" material
further in the future. This third set is to include the Whiskeyhill
material, the Cumberland Three stuff, and goodness knows what else,
but as of now (according to Allan) Bear Family doesn't plan to
include Signals. I'm assuming that this third set is far enough off
that there may be some hope of changing that, but I don't know.

Hope this update helps.

Sincerely,

Ian
