All,
MSNBC (cable/internet) is planning some pretty extensive coverage of the
gathering at Roswell this coming week. They will begin airing live reports
throughout the day on July 3. If John is, indeed, going to be hanging out
and playing there, maybe we'll catch a glimpse of the white hat? Maybe
he'll even land an interview? Keep those VCRs fire up and rolling.

Subject: Rock stars need videos
With John hitting the charts and fans clammering for "rock" albums, I find
myself imagining "Rough Sketches" videos and thinking VH1/TNN thoughts. So,
two questions for all of you mind's-eye directors out there: (1) what
single would you release first as a video from this album, and (2) what
would it look like?
I like "Neon Road" as a first video. A video collage--night shots of Los
Angeles intercut with John's own video record of Route 66, scrapbook photos
of The Furies, public domain shots of Elvis, maybe some concert footage,
John in the pickup complete with white hat and Airforce-issue shades.
Anybody else?

Any artist who can go from albums like Bloodlines and Wingless Angels straight
into 'Fire' and 'Dream Babies' without missing a beat is pretty impressive
in my book.

I've been meaning to let you guys know about this, but there have been
soooo many problems with aol not accepting posts, or people having their
mailboxes "fill up" (I guess aol has a space limitation for your mail) that
I get about 100 messages a day "warning" me of the situation.
When the problem persist for more than three days, I will unsubscribe you
from the regular bloodlines list and subscribe you to the digest version.
You don't miss a beat and when you are ready to deal with your mail, it'll
be there for you and I won't be spending an incredible amount of time and
money downloading warning messages from your post office. (BTW when we
finally find a home, this will not be so much of a problem as my connect

expect.
Anyway, if you find yourself subbed to the digest, you'll know what
happened. If you would LIKE to be subbed to the digest, regargless, please
send a message to me (ddunet@concentric.net) letting me know and I'll take
care of it for you.

Subject: Re: Ricky (JS content)
Reluctant as I am to throw anything into the fire here that isn't all JS, I
have been biting my tongue over some of the Rick Nelson references of late.
(And to justify this transgression, I'll relate it to John.)
You guys who very understandably love the irrepressible little Ricky's
(remember the old TV intro?) work MUST get your hands on the "Memphis
Sessions" LP he did that was released after his death. While stripped-down
versions of some of those cuts are available on the cool "Stay Young"
compilation on Epic ("Dream Lover, Rave On,
Almost Saturday Night" and more) they are just a sample. (And, by the way,
aren't "One By One" and "Stay Young" on that CD fabulous recordings?)
Anyway, "Memphis Sessions" came out in a limited LP and cassette form in '86,
and is probably the best thing Rick ever did. There was a controversy about
post-production, added rock guitars, etc. that tied the whole thing up
eventually...and I think has stopped it from going to CD...but it doesn't
matter. It is a gorgeous album.
"Dream Lover," which he did on SNL in the late '70s, should have been a
monster hit, but his recording company screwed up the timing of the release,
and lost all momentum. It is one of his finest moments on "Memphis."
Run, don't walk, to your used/second hand vinyl store for "Memphis Sessions"
if you love Ricky Nelson. Particularly note "Good Night Man" as one of his
greatest recordings of all time. Phenomenal.
Now...Ricky--as revealed in the biographical book done on him about five
years ago--was a HUGE fan of "California Bloodlines," it blew him away, and
he searched all his professional life for an album release that could stand
up to what John had done in 1969 with his first solo album. The closest he
came was "Memphis Sessions," and it got posthumously released, and lost in
the shuffle. A real shame. It was his shining moment. And, like
"Bloodlines," every song was a gem.
Also, like Bluesy, any kid who grew up in the '50s with a TV set soon learned
to imitate both Elvis AND Ricky...the latter being achieved with a kind of
heavy-lidded and heavy-lipped delivery. Great music. AND...when Ricky went
to an Elvis concert in LA (in '56?), nervous at meeting the King, it was Elvis
who went nuts, taking Ricky into the back room and grilling him over and over
about "Ozzie and Harriet" episodes.
Like..."was Thorny really mad when your Dad tripped over his new backyard
fence?"
Also, so you know, John is not doing Roswell this weekend. Security hassles,
crowd control concerns. And please hold this thought: "Having a Top Ten
hit is exactly like NOT having one, only you have one."

Subject: Johnny Flamingo's "Coming Out" Party
Dear Bloodliners,
After many months of anticipation, "Johnny Flamingo on the Blue Dream Road:
THE OPERA" was FINALLY unveiled last night!!!!!! It was a night to
remember, and I will never do it justice by trying to describe for you here,
what was could possibly be THE definitive show of John's career. Every time
I think he can't "outdo" himself, he goes and does it anyway! Now, I'm not
a writer, nor an I a music critic or an analyst, but I will try my darndest
to take you to Williams, AZ smack dab on Route 66 at the historic Sultana
Theater.....so "come with me now, to those thrilling days...of yesteryear....."
John was preceded by a comedy troupe called the "Route 66 Players" and then
a comedian....however, since I was in the lobby talking to Dave "DAVE" Batti
and Paul Westphal, and a couple of others, I cannot give you any
information on their performances! <G> I had a seat in the 4th row, center
aisle, which is HIGHLY unusual for me! <W> I'm used to standing in line for
a minimum of 2 hours to get my usual front row seat! But assigned seating
was the set up last night, so I didn't do too badly.
John took the stage and told the sell-out crowd that this was going to be a
"sketchy" FIRST performance of the folk opera he had written, entitled
"Johnny Flaming on the Blue Dream Road." My heart skipped a beat and I
wished so badly that ALL of you were there to see the first performance of
John's "brain child". As he said toward the end..."there's only ONE 'first
time' for anything."
Dave and Dennis "The D Man", were placed off stage, in a small "orchestra
pit" on the front side of the stage.
John explained his fascination with Rt. 66, with his story about being "left
by his dad as the '47 station wagon pulled away from the gas station". And
then struck up a ROCKIN' rendition of "Lookin' for the Spirit of the Road".
He THEN donned a very large white hat, and white sport coat, and literally
BECAME Johnny Flamingo before my very eyes! (props were already onstage)
He proceeded with
Neon Road
Johnny Flamingo on the Blue Dream Road, all the while playing the DICKENS
out of that 12 string guitar!
In between songs, he described Johnny leaving Chicago, and the sights he saw
along the way. (I can't remember every word...sorry!) But this was
entirely different than John's usual shows, because he was "in character"
this time...and quite a character he was! <BG>
He then went on to do:
The River (there IS something 'bout a moving train!)
...the one about the cornfields of Missouri, NYC and Joplin...(for the life
of me I can't remember the title, but I know someone put it up here once )
At this point, he (as Johnny Flamingo) was driving along, and what do ya
know....he sees a HITCHIKER!!!!!! Little wisp of a thing.......<giggle>
Yeah, you guess it!!!! He assumes the ROLE (as Johnny ) of picking
up.....JULY!!!!!!! on the side of the road!!!!!!
As much as EVERYONE loves that song, it was all the more intriguing, as John
actually plays out the role on STAGE!
As he's talking about seeing this "hitchiker", heeeere comes a very
interesting gal onstage! <W> She has on a rather large floppy straw hat on
with a BIG brim, sunglasses, and white lace, with a black overcoat, and a
Teddy bear backpack!
Well, you know the REST of the story.....'Where ya goin, mister?" <BG>
So Johnny and "Miranda Fontana", as she told him her name, (aka "July")
proceed on down the Blue Dream Road together. Need I tell you that they
break into "July, You're a Woman" at this point?
Following that, a ROCKIN' "Cadillac Ranch", and "The Dogs of San Juan"
As Johnny and "Miranda/July" get to know each other, she tells him "her
father used to work at this place down in New Mexico....real weird stuff
happened there, long time ago", in her sweetest, innocent voice. Well, of
course that led to
"Mac Brassel's Farm"....only THIS time, "Miranda/July" SANG it, instead of
John....and WHAT a brilliant and lovely change of pace.....her voice was
superb, and it brought a haunting and eerie quality to the song.
As Johnny and "Miranda/July" proceed down the Blue Dream Road together (she
had told him when HE asked where she was goin..."nowhere..") Johnny finds
that this little wisp of a thing, is very intriguing....she never seems to
WORRY about anything! "Miranda/July" says "it don't do no good
anyway"......and "Miranda/July" begins to sing "The River" in her sweet,
angelic and innocent voice. ( I got goose bumps)
Well, for a little break in the action, Johnny sings about his good friend
Fritz Shoulter (sp?), and his "meteor" that he bought at the MALL! "Meteor
Man" is hysterical, and brought the house down in
Scottsdale...unfortunately, (IMHO) this crowd seemed a little too reserved,
and didn't quite get all the humor, I surmise.
A VERY special treat followed......ANGEL DELGADILLO....in
PERSON.......Johnny and "Miranda/July" invited him onstage to be introduced,
and he was sooooooo overwhelmed, it seemed. For those of you who don't know
Arizona, Seligman is about 40 miles or so, west of Williams, along I-40 (aka
Rt. 66) so it was no surprise that Angel and his wife were there. John had
seen him ealier in the day, and commented that Angel had said to him "I wish
everyone in the world could be as happy as I am".
I spoke briefly to Angel after the show, and asked him if he had ever
thought in his life that he would be a "celebrity" (people MOBBED the poor
guy after the show for his autograph!) Angel humbly replied "I don't even
know what a celebrity IS." I truly believe he meant that. Charming man...I
told him I'd come up and see him soon, since I'm only about 30 miles from
Seligman! He seemed VERY pleased, and said "oh PLEASE do".....they'll
probably insist on me coming home with them, and feeding me dinnner! They
just seem like that kinda folks!
Back to the saga of Johnny and "Miranda/July", they of course sang
"Midnight Wind", and Johnny talked some more about how fascinating this lil'
gal was! He finally says to her "are YOU an angel"???????????? She
answers, with a twinkle in her eye, "maybe I am.....mebbe I'm not!" You can
guess what follows that....."Interview with an Angel".....I heard it one of
the very first times it was performed publicly, and everytime they sing the
song, it gets better and better.
By this time, Johnny and "Miranda/July" are nearing California, on the Blue
Dream Road. At this point, Johnny does a reprise of "Johnny Flamingo on the
Blue Dream Road" and realizes that he is having a real case of "supressed
memories" flooding back to him (tongue in cheek!) Can it BE? my
GAWD...this is the place where my dad left me in the desert, so many years
ago!!!!!!!!! They travel further on into California, and near Johnny's
boyhood home in Pasadena, he talks about growing up, and sings "Liberation
Day"....followed by "Pirates of Stone County Road" with a lead-in of "Ghost
of the Super Chief".....it was truly magical. I felt like I was peering
thru a looking glass, watching Johnny Flamingo growing up years ago, a few
blocks from Route 66.
By now, Johnny and "Miranda/July" decide to get MARRIED and live happily
ever after,
and close the folk opera with a reprise of "Neon Road"......I could barely
stay in my SEAT! I've seen John many many times, and don't remember too
many other times, when he was really ROCKIN' and having such a good time!!!!!!!!
"....and the crowd ROARED...." The audience seemed to "like" him,
applauded loudly, but in my own opinion, it seemed that many of those there,
were probably not John's "usual" Arizona (or anywhere!) fans. The occassion
of his playing there was the annual "Festival in the Pines", held in
Williams, and I think alot of people may not have the appreciate for what
John did last night, as all of US would have! I do, however think that as
long as some of those people aren't brain dead, he MUST have some NEW fans
today!!!!!!
We of course cheered loudly enough to get them back for an encore, albeit
only one song.....The evening wouldn't be complete without a sing-along of
"Daydream Believer"! He told how U2 has been doing that song, and getting
FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS a seat <gasp!> I think the $25 we paid, was
infinitely a better VALUE! <BG>
This show was one which had very nice promo posters, and of course I snagged
one...it will be placed in a frame next to the other one I got a few years
ago at Monsoon's in Flagstaff. I spoke to John briefly after the show, and
told him I thought it was AWESOME,.....I didn't want to just gush over
him....but I couldn't help it.... I told him the continuity and story and
"acting" of the characters just brought all the songs to LIFE....he seemed
genuinely pleased that I liked it that well.
I could almost smell the exhaust along the highway, feel the dust in my
eyes, hear the hum of wheels along the Blue Dream Road....John brought it
all to life....Hearing all the songs before was wonderful, of course...but
the way it was performed last night, gave this folk opera, and the Blue
Dream Road a LIFE of their own!!!
A note to JS/Angelbravo......
Please forgive if I've forgotten anything, gotten titles/order
incorrectly...it was real hard to try and take "notes" when I was mesmerized
by the performances!!!! John, it was absolutely superb....it's brilliant,
creative, humorous....all the qualities of a HIT!
I know it was "rough" as you said, and I take that into
consideration...that's what scares me....what would a BIG production look
like??? I'm not sure my heart could take it! <grin> You sounded great,
looked great, and were gracious as always....THANK you for a wonderful
evening! oh, and by the way...hope you hurry up and get back online!!!!!
<grin>
I think that about covers what was a magical and special evening....I wish
you all could have been there for the "only one first time".....Oh...I
almost forgot...I saved the BEST (kinda) for LAST!!!! In my haste to get
out of my house and get to Williams in time, I almost forgot, but grabbed my
CAMERA on my last breath out the door...I HAVE
PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <BG> I will probably get them
developed this week....I need someone with a scanner to email me and send me
your address so I can send em to ya, and get em up ONLINE!!!!! ClackClack,
Michelle, or whoever else has a web page for John, let me know how best to
get these posted so all can see....they're WORTH seeing...you won't believe
how KEWL the "players" look in this folk opera!
And now (borrowing from Bluesy) "over and out...."

Seems we could start a Rick Nelson E-mail list.....if we only had the
time. I've enjoyed all the Nelson posts but especially Blue's adventure
at the Texas county fair and was it Marty (I hope I'm remembering
correctly) who wrote about his grandmother's death the same night as
Rick's? Now another great post: thanks Lordfrench. It's good to know
that Rick had such excellent taste: he loved "California Bloodlines".
Thanks for the tip about "Memphis Sessions"... I'll start my search
tomorrow. Now...do you know where I can find any recordings of the young
Bluesboy doing "Heartbreak Hotel" or "Travelin' Man"???

I think you're right on track, Del, "Neon Road" offers endless
opportunities for images of this country, the Road, and JS in those
Airforce-issue shades. Definitely need Elvis "down in Memphis, they were
talking, bout a boy who crossed the line." Chevys, El Dorados,
Fairlanes, Harry Truman, shots of the second world war, "we had honor we
had promise we had dreams of better days." We need a director who can
capture the promise and optimism of the post-war era and the
disillusionment and chaos that followed, "somewhere in the short strokes
we got lost along the way". We need to convince John that this dream
video must become reality.

Well, all my Ricky is vinyl. However One X One and Stay Young are probably
the two best cuts on the album I mentioned earlier, "Intakes" so I suspect
this album was the core of this Epic CD you've been referring to. "Intakes"
was on Epic. Like the remake of "Gimme a Little SIgn" a lot too. Have the
Memphis Sessions. Good album. Rick's career seemed on the verge of a
reemergence at the time of his death.
I hesitated to mention the Rick Nelson bio book. I think it is a rather good
book but it was written by that dreaded "Joel Selvin".
note to Cath: Guess I'll add some of these to the BoDeans for you.
Stay Young keep your wheels in motion,
You got everything that you need
Stay Young with your rock n rolling
All the best things in life are free.
Its a Gallagher & Lyle song by the way.

Actually, Steve is trying to discover the Road. He's broadcasted four hours
a day from various stops on Route 66 all last week and will next week,
featuring all kinds of guests who shared much of the history of Route 66 with
the audience. Steve's a big John Stewart fan -- he was Steve's first radio
interview twenty years ago -- and he's been playing cuts off Rough Sketches
and really pushing the album. Hopefully that will translate into more album

John made a guest appearance on the show last week and talked and played for
about two hours. It was great radio and great John. They even duetted on
Neon Road and Daydream Believer.

Thanks one more time, Bob, for taking the time to transcribe all those
Omaha Rainbow articles onto your Bob's Basement site. Great stuff.
I've been reading out of order, so I just recently got to Issue 1 and came
across what might well be my favorite John Stewart quote of all time. Hell,
perhaps my favorite anyone's quote of all time. In describing his
fascination with the road, John says:
``People are living and working hard and not getting any sort of
fulfilment, while right outside their front door is a road.''
Amen.
Then I went on to Issue 2 and found the solution to one of my longtime
Stewart mysteries. During the roll call at the end of ``Never Going Back''
on ``Bloodlines'' Stewart yells out something that sounds like ``Mix a part
of an egg.'' The Rainbow article translates as ``Nik `Zapata' Venet.''
Thanks again, Bob. -- Don
