Nanc,
Isn't it strange how these messages keep repeating. Keep repeating.
Natural Selection is a part of Darwin's Theory of Evolution (not to be
confused with Darwin's Army) that states that only the healthiest members of
a species will survive ("survival of the fittest"). Hope this clarifies
things for you.

It was Johnny Cash in the fifties - available everywhere.
BTW, why didn't John Stewart get the 'Bear Family box set' treatment -
the definitive collection of Johnny Cash' early material is available on
*four* box sets from Bear Family. Can you imagine all of JS early
material being re-issued this way?
This is how all that material that hasn't made it onto CD and those
unobtainable songs should be released. How would you like a nice 5 CD
box set of JS??

I was just at the Kingston Trio's Music Space Message Center, and folks were
chatting about the Wee Five (You Were On My Mind). Someone was wondering
what their connection was to the K.T. Their connection was that John's
brother, Michael Stewart, was in the group. Also John wrote several songs
for them, and he was present at the recording session at Columbus studios in
San Francisco.
Does anyone know ( I'll bet John knows) what ever happened to Michael
Stewart? What ever became of Bev Bivins, the female member of the Wee
Five? She used to be a neighbor of mine, in the early '60's, in Santa Ana,
Ca.

Subject: Great News & A Call To Radio
First - the great news:
Rough Sketches has charted on the Gavin Americana Charts! It goes in
Friday (6/27) as #35! Gavin is a radio trade journal, and the
Americana chart tracks the 100 or so stations that report airplay of
"Americana" music. Artists like Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, Steve
Earle, and Alison Krauss are all people who have hit the top of the
chart, so John fits right in.
We're really excited to have had Rough Sketches hit the charts, and
are hoping all you Bloodliners can do us and John a favor and give
your nearest Americana radio stations a call. There are many more
stations than these that have a copy of the album, but these are the
ones that count for charting which helps us a lot in getting John
more exposure.
In the next 4 messages I've listed all the reporting stations, their
cities, and their phone numbers (if we had it). If you could give
any of them a call, we'd appreciate it! And I apologize to anybody
who gets digests, and is about to get 4 real long messages full of
dull stuff. I just couldn't figure out any better way to get this
info out to you, and I know you'd all like to help John get heard!
Thanks more than I can say! And check out the Ad for Rough Sketches
in the May / June issue of Performing Songwriter!
Sincerely,
Ian

Yes please!!
There was a "Bear Family Collection" in the late eighties, 4 cds in a
wrap - round "Box". I got very excited when Track records in York
advertised it in Record Collector, but it was only a re - packaging job
of "Lonesome Picker", "Sunstorm", Trancas" and , I think, "Blondes".
A strange combination of source labels, actually!
Whilst on the ""John Stewart" material, but not THE John Stewart
material..I once got caught beautifully by ordering from my record shop,
in the late 70s a new John Stewart album called "Meet Mr. Lucky" Now it
didn't sound like a John Stewart type title, but then Johnny Cash has
had a few "strange titles", so I thought, OK!!
When I arrived in the shop, my friendly salesman said, "Hey, you have
really got to hear this (they knew my love of JS & trio and had been
getting me the stuff for years). They put it on the speakers..it was
ANOTHER John Stewart, playing the electric organ!! Needless to say, I
didn't buy it!!
Is it true that Bear Family are going to issue all the Trio (JS. NR.BS)
albums? Keep hearing that rumour.

How about it?
With John's new album doing the business maybe it's the right time.
The three Elvis box-sets (50's, 60's, 70's masters)are a tribute to his
talent and are probably the first time his back catalogue has been
treated with respect by his record company (IMO), and the Bear Family
Johnny Cash is the first attempt to create the same kind of tribute to
Johnny Cash (who certainly deserves it). ELvis in the 50's - Johnny Cash
in the 50/60's - these are some of the best records ever made in their
fields and if the songs had been treated with the respect they deserve
subsequent to their original release would be treasured recordings
rather than the subject of *endless* compilation albums which treat them
like 'throwaway' tunes.
So how about it...
A retrospective of John Stewart - a tribute. A chance to put together a
history of someone else whose music should be preserved and given the
serious treatment it deserves.
and to all you Stewartistas:
If you could compile it/them what would it be?
(I expect you'd have to bear in mind what you would do for the second
box set when the first one sells well :-) )
and how would you do it -
Chronological order? - of recording or release?
- and what would you include - all songs? demos? what would you do
about outtakes -? And what about very early material?
Don't forget the obligatory 80 page booklet.
Do you think we could set to this task ...?

I understand that bear family is planning a box set on the "Guard KT"
towards the end of this year and the "JS KT" next year. I've heard that
they will include the Dave Guard's post KT recordings with the

include "Signals" on the JS-KT box set to serve as a transition into his

I know John didn't write it, but since I love the song Roddy McCorley that the
Stewart Kingston Trio recorded (from the 4 CD Capitol Years set), not to
mention that it sounds rather Stewartesque (did I make up a new word!?!), I am
trying to determine if Roddy died during the song. He "goes to die" (future
tense) a lot, but later it implies that he has died, although I can't make out
all the words. Any other theories?
I think the song is about the problems in northern Ireland, since that is
where the River Bann is in my atlas. What about the other places mentioned -
does anyone know how they are spelled so I can look them up?
I also thought about Tom Dooley, but I don't think he dies during the song,
either. If we go on to consider all the KT songs, we'll be here forever
wasting time...

I don't think that anyone who is critical is critical of the State of
California. What they are critical of is what the greedy politicians, real
estate developers and agents, corporate executives and others are doing to it.
The so called Sillicon Valley is a prime example of an area that has been ruined
by overdevelopment and raw greed over the past 20 years. When only 15 to 20 per
cent of the people living in a particular area cannot qualify to buy a home in
that area something must be wrong. When people have to commute to the Sillycone
Valley from as far away as Stockton, Fresno, Los Banos and other far away
points, something must be wrong. When the sky is never really clear but usually
some shade of brown, something must be wrong. I just wish we could all get
together and do something about it. I'm afraid the only salvation may be an 8.0
earthquake followed by a few 7.0 aftershocks.

Here here!!!! I was born and raised in SoCal and so was my dad, (he's 89
years old).
California USED to be a great place to live....but in my own lifetime, it's
become a pit, IMHO......
Arizona is heaven as far as I'm concerned....and look at the songs John's
written about THAT! My favorite is "ESCAPE to ARizona!!"

I love John's rock sound, but untill he decides to do another rock
album, drop the "Bandera" disc into your CD players for the best he has
ever done as far as I'm cocerned! "Liberation Day" is the one to beat!

Re Roddy McCorley - yes, he is on the way to his hanging. It is a song about
resistance to the English, in Northern Ireland, but it takes place well
before the Partition (which took place in 1922). It would qualify as a
"death song", as would "Tom Dooley", except neither was written by John.

Subject: Route 66/Angel Delgadillo
Chicago radio host Steve Dahl is traveling from Pasadena to Chicago with
his three sons on Route 66. He is also writing about the journey for
the Chicago Sun-Times.
In Friday's Sun-Times, he writes about Seligman, Arizona and the
Delgadillo brothers, Angel and Juan. Thought the group might be
interested in what Steve has to say.
"We stopped in Seligman, Ariz., and visited two of the most pleasant and
hospitable people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. They are Angel
and Juan Delgadillo, and they are characters. I have never met two men
more at ease with who they are and what they are. Angel owns the barber
shop in town and still cuts hair in the chair that his father bought
back in 1929.
I went in and got a primo, old-style, leather-strop, straight-razor
shave. Then we went next door to brother Juan's Snow Cap Drive-In,
where he serves up "hamburgers without ham", "cheeseburgers with
cheese", and "dead chicken with all the trimmings". How are you going
to beat that for good old All-American fun?
Juan and Angel used to chase the shadows of the cars as the Grapes of
Wrath people migrated westward through their sleepy high desert town,
where things once got so bad for the 11 Delgadillos (Mom, Dad and nine
sons and daughters) that at one point they had their Model T and a
homemade trailer loaded up with everything they owned and were ready to
join the great migration westward to join the families who headed
towards California to find a way out of the Great Depression.
Juan, who played with a big band that gigged up and down Route 66 in
these parts, was given a job with the Santa Fe Railroad because the
bandleader he was playing with couldn't afford to lose him. The rest, as
they say, is the history of the Great Road."
Cheers,
Dick

Anyone out there?
I have been so busy with my new job that I've not had the "proper" amount of
time to give to this list. I was automatically switched to the digest
version. Not to happy about that and if my computer illiterate self can
figure it out, I'll be back to the old version.
I would like more info on New Mexico for Labor Day, the packages sound great!
Would anyone with info please e-mail me directly to avoid the difficultly
I'm having with the "digest".
Thanks, Margie

With all due respect to the writer of this article, and the fact that he's
even paying ATTENTION to Rt 66 and Angel Delgadillo, he sounds like a "man
doing a job"...a reporter...instead of a man who has the heart and soul of
the road in his music, who has travelled it to EXPERIENCE it, not to just
write about it. John's descriptions in song about Rt. 66 take you there,
let you feel the "rythmn" of the road, smell the exhaust of the cars, feel
the dust blowing around you......
Why don't more people want THAT, instead of an article written by a guy just
doin' his job?
IMHO,
Nanc
