Subject: JS For The Fourth!
Hey All!
As we all know the Fourth of July is comming up. Many of us will
have Bar-B-Ques, Picnics at the beach and go to see fireworks. A lot of
people bring their music with them. Mostly Rock 'n Roll. I was thinking
of some great J.S. songs for the Fourth to share with tohers. Something
to help us remember why we celebrate.
Here they are! Oh God NOT ANOTHER LIST!
I remember America
New Frontier(Trio version)
Mother Country
Clack, Clack(a tribute to Bobby K.)
Oldest Living Son
Armstrong
Spirit
Last Campaign Trilogy
Survivors
Children of the New Frontier
The Road
Now I don't have ALL of John's works so these are from my own
collection. If anyone else has suggestions would love to see them. With
the advent of being able to pick and choose which cuts to play on some
machines, it should have some interesting mixes!

Subject: Re: Last Hurrah
I was too young to understand the death of King and Kennedy. I was born
in 1962 for one thing. I was talking to my partner the other day about
JFK's death. I was wondering how this world would be if he never went to
Dallas?
As I thought about it I realized that what happened to parts of
this country after that horrible incident was the death of spirit. The
death of seeing into a future where people could at least, begin to come
together. With all his faults JFK did have a big heart and large spirit
for everyone who was thought of as less then worth the time. I know that
RFK felt the same.
After we "thought" we got over the shock of JFK's death we
started to re-build but only on the surfece. Inside there was always
"THAT THING THAT HAPPENED"(No disresepct for the death of JFK, MLK, or
RFK)nudging us on the shoulder. That voice saying "Hey the dream died on
a hotel floor" why go on?A lot of people truly beleived that and alas
taught it to their children.
I felt in realizing that for myself at times, I could see why
people are so full of hate at times. So selfish, so egocentric! Because
knowing that the goodness of a man(men)their visions, dreams, and cares
for the future can be blown away in an instant. Why make the effort?
Why make our own personal efforts.
I'll tell you why.
Because to just walk about like Zombies in shock, fear, and
helplessness gives power to the death of dreams these men had(even John
Stewart). To take charge however of the dreams that were developed by
these three men no matter what, does them honor and heals our wounds in
some way.
I know this may not have anything to do with John and it may be a
bit scatter brained but that's okay. In a way these three men's visions,
words and deeds opened the way for a person like me(disabled)to write
about them and John in the best way I can.

Well DUH! on ME! YES! yES! of course JULY your a woman should be
on the list! I like the "Signals" version best.
Hey BTW, does anyone find it fun to listen to the "progression"
of John's voice throughout his carrier? I finally got my copy of
"Signals" on tape and it's neat to hear how young John's voice is back
then. Yeah I know he was younger.
I played "Signals" then "Punch" then "Rough Sketches" the other
day. WOW! WAY COOL!

Subject: Checking In
Hi to everyone. I have gone into anonymous mode for the last couple of
weeks, due to both travel and many deadlines. When I finally checked my
personal e-mail, I found something like 400 postings from our
overachieving list server. I have spent the last several days plowing
through them, and I must say that I continue to be impressed with the
level, tone, and content of the postings. This is a group both
compassionate and friendly, not overly contentious, and highly aware of
how one man's singing and writing have defined the era that, in one way
or another, we have all experienced. Although it appears that many of us
have been rather badly used by the times we have gone through, we have
gotten to a place where we can share concerns and think about others
rather than ourselves (think a little more of others and a little less of
me). It is a neat group to be associated with.
I enjoyed the variety of lists of favorite artists. None of mine failed
to be represented and were usually present on more than one list. Here's
to success and long life to them all. May we continue to enjoy this
legacy of music for decades to come, as I am sure that we will enjoy John's.
Otherwise, not much to report on this front. John doesn't get down to
Florida much, and I don't get to anywhere else much, so I will just have
to enjoy your concert experiences vicariously. I do appreciate the
excellent reports and stories we have had.
Oh, I finally got my hands on the CD of "Rough Sketches" (correctly
bought from Folk Era) I have to agree that it is a really exceptional piece
of work, AB's best in quite some time, I think. While some cuts on Airdream
Believer may be better individually than many of the cuts on Sketches, as an
album, Sketches is better (or so I opine). I am really glad to have them both,
but I am especially glad that Sketches is as good as it is. Give us more
please--I am ready for the Darwin's Army release.
I hope to be a bit more involved in this ongoing dialogue in the next few
weeks, but if I falter on writing, I will continue to be reading. I will
continue to admire Michelle for keeping this all going from the road,
even as she recovers from real estate sticker shock.

Last Kiss is the correct response to the original query. In this case the
mishap was a single vehicle crash. "The sound of tires, the bustin' glass,
the fateful scream that I heard last." I believe J Frank Wilson & the
Cavaliers received a 85 (the computed average of 65 + 75) from the math
wizards on Bandstand. (Good beat, I could dance to it but didn't like the
lyrics).
Teen Angel, Mark Dinning, involved the car stalling on the tracks and the
ring. I don't think Bandstand reviewed this "monster smash".
This all should not be confused with Ray Peterson's Laura, Johnny Preston's
Running Bear or the ShangriLas' motorcycle mayhem Leader Of The Pack.

I was the culprit that recommended Tish. As I said, "Culture Swing" made a
lot of top ten lists in 1992 and is recommended. "Homeland" has a song
called "Voice of the Big Guitar" that is worth the CD alone. There is also a
compliation CD out called "Best of Sandia - The Watermelon Years." It should
have a good cross section of her material and be a good introduction. Her
last two albums have been on Warner Brothers - "Destiny's Gate" and "Dreaming
In The Labyrinth" - and are also worthwhile.
She's the type that could sing the phone book and it would be captivating.

There will probably be some song that maked the list that will make you say,
"Wait a minute, I liked that one!!" But it is a very funny book.
For the cheapskates, just read it in the store, it's only about 90 pages.
But expect to be glared at as you guffaw loudly.

PS Not to keep you in suspense, but the worst song, as voted by his readers,

Heartbreaking indeed. Now, trying to swerve this baby back to Stewartville,
I got to thinking about if John Stewart had ever written a song in which a
character dies during the song. The key phrase is DURING THE SONG. This
rules out JFK/RFK/MLK/Secretariat tributes, and even the snake from ``Dead
Snakes.'' Maria from ``Irresistable Targets'' is probably a tweener. So,
given that criteria, which I just arbitrarily made up, I can immediately
come up with only two characters from Stewart songs who are alive during
part of the song, but dead by the end: E.A. Stewart from ``Mother
Country,'' and Annie from ``Annie Born and Died.''
Any others? -- Don

"Natural selection": the culling out of the weak, lame, and stupid
from the herd by an inability to survive and the domination, usually
expressed by increased breeding opportunities, of the more adaptive.

A Darwinian concept -- you know, "survival of the fittest" and all. If she didn't have

opportunities, of the more adaptive. since we don't have Sabretooth Tigers knocking off
the fools and/or teenagers among us, we are left with only the Sante Fe Railroad to do
the job. ;-}

oooh... most deftly upstaged by a far wittier response than my own! Lobo, have I ever
told you how much I appreciate your contributions?

I am listening to Lonsome Picker at my desk when a woman walks by and says
"Hey, who is that? I like that. Is that a tape?" She then proceeded to
say - "Could we put that on the speaker so we all could hear it? I now
have an office of 50 + people who are listening to John. The tape I gave
her has Lonesome Picker, Willard and Bloodlines - Daydream Believer came on
and my phone lit up - 13 people called to ask me who this was and why he
was singing that song. I LOVED telling them!
Little by little we all do our part don't we? Today Salida, tomorrow the
WORLD!

This is way off the subject matter of this group, but I know we
have some Canadiens who frequent the group and I was wondering if anyone
could give me a crash course in Canadian Immigration Basics, including
international students.
I know its a stretch, but what the hey?!

Hey, folks! Sent in a little email to ASL and got this response. Pretty
much a form letter, but maybe with a little more stirring of the pot...
Take care,

Hi Steve,
Thanks for visiting Austin City Limits on the WWW! We hope you'll visit again
soon.
We publish our repeat schedule for Austin City Limits and more information at
http://www.klru.org/acl/info.html. Look under "repeats." We've recently trade
to make it easier to navigate. Let us know what you think.
It would be difficult for us to provide accurate information for each TV market
in a listserv format but we're brainstorming ways to provide that sort of info.
For now, your best bet is to contact your local PBS station to receive their
monthly program guide. It's the most accurate schedule available.
Thanks for watching Austin City Limits on PBS!
