Subject: A Special Reason to Rise. . .
Lazy summer Sunday afternoon. . perfect time to check Bloodlines . . .talk
with friends. . . ..bask in the glow of two JS concerts in four days....life
for a moment is good.
Dial in AOL..."You've got mail"...scroll thru to 6/22... find a post from
Earl and Carmen on the backchannel... another update about Chama and the
B'Lines Labor Day Weekend reunion?....click it on. ..
First paragraph: why he's missed his email - majordomo knocked him off-line;
Michelle has him back. That's good. I keep reading.
Second paragraph - half way thru - oh god! all of a sudden, that train
called reality comes crashing thru my monitor!... ..for Earl writes:
<< If Carmen hears I've done this (posting) she'll kill me, but yesterday,
she flew
<< down to Phoenix for kidney transplant surgery at Good Sam. Operation went
<< well, but she will be down there for a couple weeks. Whether this puts
<< the Labor Day Weekend down the drain, remains to be seen.
<< I think I owe it to her to plow on, I know she wants it to happen as bad
as I do.
<< I personally don't want to tell bloodlines about my problems, but if you
<< or Nanc want to cut the world in. . .
<< Carmen never seems to get enough credit for what she accomplishes,
<< especially considering what she goes through just to get through the
<< day.
<< She is my inspiration to carry on when life gets tough.
. . for a moment, bright skies turn grey, the Phoenix sun dips on the
horizon..
. while a dozen different thoughts flash through my mental filters.
Wait a minute . . weren't we all together just a week ago. . . Flagstaff. .
. listening to trains and John. . .laid back. . .dinner together. . ..sharing
laughs . . she's in the best hospital . . kidney *transplant*?! . ..Earl
flies in Wednesday. . Carmen already on the mend?. . .should Nancy and I "cut
the world in"? I don't even think about it . ..grab the mouse . .click
"Reply" . . .feelings become cyber....time to rally the Bloodliners.
My immediate opinion and assessment - not for a moment should there be
reason to doubt we can all pull together and make this weekend work. Too much
has been planned...too many people have committed...too many dreams are on
the line..
What better therapy for Carmen. . .and all of us. . .then to meet in Chama
for three days of song, train rides, music, fun and espirit de corps.
Earl, you're only partially correct. It should read " *WE* owe it to her to
plow on". We all want Chama to happen as bad as you two do. This could be
the seed that grows. . . into an annual tree for all fans and friends of
John's music to gather under.
Details later, but since Earl and Carmen shared some thoughts about the
practical intricacies of the Labor Day weekend reunion with Nancy and me
while in Flagstaff last week, for the next four of five days, why don't you
address any concerns/suggestions/recommendations to either of us - and
certainly copy Earl if you wish. . .or just post it on Bloodlines. Whatever
you feel most comfortable with.
I'll be talking to Earl later this week here in Phoenix. Will see where
everything is . . .how much of the basics are done, what remains undone.
We'll keep everyone updated on all the activity.
A million thanks in advance to all of you . . .talk to you soon.. .it's still
Sunday afternoon, but the destiny of the day has taken on a little more
intensity.
One final thought:
"Inspiration to carry on?" I believe we've found us a special reason to
rise. . .to ensure that the train that runs by Chama becomes a three-day
reality for all Bloodliners. . . especially Carmen and Earl.
Rick.........Nancy..........

Subject: Sigh of relief (no JS content)
Bloodliners-
Nothing in here about music, just had a need to say something to
somebody. Please feel free to delete.
I'm part of a group which provides humanitarian psychological
assistance for traumatic situations - TWA800, OK City, Sarajevo, etc.
Been on a few of them myself. My pro bono job is to organize teams and
get them to spots where the local mental health workers are requesting
assitance, either in working with the people or in teaching the workers
some new skills. Last year I was in Belfast doing that when the
ceasefire broke down and the IRA set off the bombs at an army HQ.
This year we sent a team back to Northern Ireland where they did
workshops in 'Derry and Belfast. While they were there the ceasefire
again broke down. I had talked the night before with one of the
psychologists and everything was fine. The next day an ambush killed
two.
The team finished their work, which the folks there greatly
appreciated, and left in good shape. And I started breathing again.
I know, objectively, they were in less danger of being hurt in a
terorist incident than they were of being killed in a random act of
violence here in the States (not so when our team went into Sarajevo,
but that's "ancient" history), but having to be "mother hen" had me
watching the clock the entire time they were gone. In many ways, it was
a lot easier going myself!
Anyway, I'm happy they all got out with their fingers and toes (and,
hopefully, hearts and souls) intact. I just wanted to share my relief
with someone and you folks seem to have that streak of compassion and
caring which reminds me of the people on the team so, what the hell, I
thought I'd tell you all. Maybe it's a way to start a week knowing that
something good was done by some good people in a place where too much
bad has come down.
Take care,
Steve

In the early 70's I was fortunate enough to get tickets to a twin-bill
concert in Bemidji, Mn. My hometown which has a state university. The
artists were Jim Croce and Ricky Nelson. Ironically, Ricky had plane
trouble and so he did a concert the next weekend (2 hours) and Jim Croce
did a 2 hour set on the scheduled date. Two great performers done too
soon.

You will get a lot of different answers on this question, but I
would say that all of her albums are musts.
One of her best albums is "Little Love Affairs" and MCA album, although
I believe she had some dental work before recording it and ends up with
a bit of a lisp. She also has some Rounder recordings which are also
very good. The best of which is "The Last of the True Believers". Were
talking good, better, best with all of these albums.
Storms is also very good (1989). Late Night Grande Hotel was an experiment
recording with an orchestra. The first half is good, the last half is not quite
as good. I have almost everything she put out including some 12" singles from
the U.K.
NED.

Hi Ron,
Rick Nelson was one of the best!!! A huge influence on John Fogerty. By the
way, Rick's original bass player, Joe Osborn went on to become a top
session player in the music industry. Listen to Joe's bass on the Simon &
Garfunkel album "Bookends" or "Aquarius" by the Fifth Dimension. The Walter
Brennan song you are referring to is, I think, "Old Rivers" What about
Brook Bentons "Boll Weeval" song? "Now the boll weeval said to the
farmer....."

Hi Mike,
Nanci Griffith: Must haves....
1. Little Love Affairs...why on earth, "Sweet Dreams will Come" was not
duet Grammy of the year for her & John is beyond belief!!!!!!!
2. "Other Voices"
3. "Flyer"
4. "One Very Fine Evening" (I think its called that...I'm at wiok, so I
can't remember exactly) anyway its a live album, and the song "love at the
five & dime" is worth the price of the CD.
Enjoy,

To me, the song "Last Hurrah" is the potential end of John's musical run at
recording. At the time of that album, he didn't know if he was going to
make another one. "clear the tracks, this songs been taken" "loyal friends

might have been"......

It is a very good way to start the week Steve, thanks for sharing it

group of folks John Stewart has gathered around him....a reflection of

As promised, John Stewart was indeed played on the "Midnight Special" radio

were played as part of a set of "road songs," and they sounded great. The
host also praised the songs and plugged Rough Sketches.

I saw Bob Lind at the Ice House in Pasadena, CA, many years ago. He said
he wrote his big hit, "Illusinve Butterfuly of Love," on a bet - he could
write a hit some with just 2 chords. All you musicians out there, song is

Is John really playing at, or near, Roswell, N.M. for the 50'th anniversary
of " The Roswell Incident" ? I sure hope this is true, and if he does, I
hope he takes a bunch of cd's to sell.
Speaking of Roswell, and cd's, I talked to Ian (Folk Era) a while ago and he
is sending late night talk show host, Art Bell, a copy of "SKETCHES" so he
can listen to, and hopefully play "Mac Brasel's Farm on his show. It would
be very appropriate since Art's radio show deals almost entirely with the UFO
phenomenon. I'm still trying to get through to Art Bell to remind him to at
least listen to the song, and suggest that he play it on the air.
Speaking of UFO's, did anyone see the "lights" over Phoenix on Mar. 13?

I've been layin' back watching the best and worst and finding out
you people are as crazy as I am. It's downright scary how I find
myself in 99.9% agreement with these lists. I do want to make
sure there's an extra vote for Roseanne Cash, Nanci Griffith, =
John Lennon, Paul McCartney,Pete Kennedy, Arlo Guthrie,
Rick Nelson, (out of my closet - John Denver), Livingston Taylor,
Richie Havens, Christine Lavin, Alison Krauss, Utah Phillips,
Dar Williams etc. etc. ad nauseum.
Here's my Ricky Nelson Story -
About 1959-60 (I guess alcohol and drugs DO mess up your memory)
I (with my mom) went to see Rick Nelson at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City
(Pre gambling - high diving horse etc. etc.) He was on for about a half
hour and that was it. Since the pier had one way off (if you didn't have a
boat you had to leave by the boardwalk) they decided to sneak Ricky out.
They found a kid who looked somewhat like Rick and sent him out first.
Everybody went after the kid for autographs and Rick made it to his hotel.
Frankie Avalon was in town and his manager spotted the kid -"Hey
kid what's your name? Can you sing? --- Fabian and I don't know.
I do think Rick was underrated and his 'covers' some of the best done by
a white performer. He was so overshadowed by Elvis (and rightly so)
he just 'didn't get any respect'.
Michelle - there are a lot of places in Rhode Island less than 200K.
Could you be adding to the evacuation of the promised land?
I still have hopes of getting to New Mexico for Labor day - My work
schedule could screw it up,
am I too late to get in? I've still got to convince my wife that I should
go... The kids don't really
need shoes - it doesn't get that cold in Rhode Island.
If you're drivin' on the highway...
