Havumaki" <lnhfbo@polaristel.net> Subject: Digest The digest version of this list is wonderful. As Michelle stated there is no editing or elimination. One message composed of many. :-) Okay...I have a Partridge Family CD. However, as a college student in 1977 I went for a quarter of study to England and Austria. While in England, after a night at a pub (shandy was interesting); a group of us found a gaggle of young girls chasing a limo down a street. We asked one girl with tears streaming down her cheeks who was in the car. "David Cassidy," she wailed. We (without meaning to offend) burst out laughing hysterically. Hopefully, she got over our indictment, and I still sing along with "Somebody wants to love you" Luke There is a train and it runs by my room And the train is called reality and it's coming way too soon.-John Stewart ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jun 1997 From: "Nick D'Amato" <damato.4@osu.edu> Subject: Re: Whose Chose To Sing Lead? L.A. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jun 1997 From: Bill Reynolds <wbr@ibm.net> Subject: Introduction My name is Bill, I've recently joined this list and am looking forward to whatever it brings. I'm from the San Diego (CA) area...Santee to be exact. Both my kids were born at Mercy Hospital which I seem to remember John saying that's where he was born. I first became acquainted with John Stewart while in the Navy (68-72). I found the Willard album in the ship's store. The cover caught my eye and I was intrigued because of the people playing on the album. So began many years of listening pleasure. I've been an amatuer/wannabe musician (guitar) since high school and have had great enjoyment playing and sharing his (your) music. A short list of favorite artists include (other than the obvious): Dylan Peter Paul & Mary Jerry Jeff Walker David Bromberg Guy Clark Steve Goodman Ry Cooder James Taylor Kenny Loggins The Band Neil Young CS&N Probably a pretty standard list for this group. Somebody mentioned Harry Nillson a couple days ago -- I've been singing "Nobody Cares About the Railroads Anymore" ever since. Brought back alot of memories. Speaking of memories does anyone remember Joe & Eddie? I'm not quite sure what attracts me to a particular artist but usually I find some emotional link with the music. Also, I think quite often, there's a direct relationship between my abiltiy to enjoy listening to an artist or their music and my enjoyment in playing or trying to play their tunes - shallow maybe, but what the hell. John Stewart's music was perfect for me in all repects! I prefer to think that there's no bad music though, just music I'm unable to appreciate. With a couple of exceptions I won't get in to, I've found that I can appreciate most music at some level. The biggest revelation for me was when I began studying piano. I never appreciated or enjoyed many classical composers until I tried to play their music. There are now a few Schubert and Brahms pieces I get very emotional over. Maybe it's just my age. For you guitar players: I had been saving for a Martin D28 for years. I finally bought one in 1972. Though I was thrilled and proud to own it and got tremendous enjoyment playing it, I always felt like it was missing something or that it was not quite what I really wanted. While searching a few years ago for a Martin J40 for my brother I stumbled into a music store that had a wall of Taylor instruments. I played a 615 and knew the minute my fingers touched the strings that this is the instrument I'd been wanting all my life. I bought it that day. My two brothers and I now own about 9 Taylors. (I say "about" because I can't keep track of their purchases. I still only have the 615) Every Taylor I've played sounds better than the last. I live about 5 miles from the factory and visit often, what a place! I've been particularly blessed because one of my brothers became a "friend of the Taylor family" (through church) and I was able to attend a couple concerts given for the employees by Taylor artists: Leo Kotke and Dan Crary. A very unique experience. I've only been able to see John Stewart live three times. Once at some place in Huntington Beach over 15 years ago. The one thing I remember most about it was that he played piano on a couple tunes. As far as I know, he hasn't been to San Diego in many years, but I always keep my eye out. The last time I saw him was at a place in Solana Beach or Encinitas I forget which but the resturant is gone now. It was about the time "Punch the Big Guy" was released. He (you John) were incredible. You were playing an electric - Takamine I think - with some amazing results. "Ticket to the Stars" I'll never forget! I'd never heard that kind of sound. I'm beginning to ramble. Best to you all, I'll be in touch, Bill ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jun 1997 From: Bob Foster <lcfoster@sdcoe.k12.ca.us> Subject: Re: Introduction Bill-the place in Huntington Beach was the Golden Bear. "closet" favorites .... Dizzy by Tommy Roe and Shannon (the song about the dead dog; can't remember who did this one. Henry Gross, maybe?) Also the Grass Roots (Where Were You). >>Since I'm a little younger than most of you, I have a confession to make <hanging head> I was 14 years old in 1969, and I was a "bubble gummer"...."Sugar Sugar" was one of my FAVORITE songs!!! <gasp!> Gimme SOME credit...at least my taste in music has VASTLY improved! <BG> Nanc<< Don't feel bad, Nanc. When this song was out, I hated it (I was also 14 in 1969), but when I heard it on an oldies station not too long ago, I thought (and this is *really* scary) hmmm....that wasn't so bad after all. Aldon (head hanging in shame) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jun 1997 From: ClackClack@aol.com Subject: Re: "Closet" music > Closet song > confession: "My Dad" by Paul Peterson. He even sang it on "The Donna Reed > Show" > Merle Closet songs? Maybe you should lock me up.... I think I remember that song! 2 of my closet confessions from that era were a song by Patty Duke about butterflies I think and a song that I think was called The Joker Went Wild by Brian Hyland? Never had either of these two records but loved to hear them on the radio at the time. This may not be a confession, but as a long time Rick Nelson fan I enjoyed all of his stuff and couldn't wait till the end of Ozzie & Harriet till Rick might be on. Oh, here's some more closet confessions. I couldn't tell you what 60's show this was on, but Walter Brennan sang a song about One of These Days I'm going to climb that Mountain... I know it was released on an album but I heard it on a show and just loved it as a kid. And you will know that I was really sappy because I liked that John Davidson show, esp the part at the end when he took song requests. You know, like Down in the valley in a little bitty stream swam two little fishies and a mommie fish too. Swim said the mommie fish swim if you can and they swam and they swam right over the dam... How's that for an LSD flashback, Yikes! And thanks for the recollection of the Freddie! What a riot that was. In the 6th grade we had some sort of singing class and we usually practised songs from things like My Fair Lady or Mary Poppins or what have you. One day however we went to the cafeteria and I guess this was the teacher throwing us a changeup pitch. She put on Freddie and The Dreamers and had us all waving our arms around doing the Freddie. We were so hysterical that I can still remember the stomach pains from laughing so hard and falling down on the floor. And I even have a couple of John Fred albums. His band had several good songs. And I even listened to Rod McKuen. I sort of liked that gravel road voice and I wonder now had good or bad some of those songs would sound today?? To me it's about not giving up on a dream. "Clean your guns the battle's over, they belong now to the wind" That always makes me think of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. "In Tennessee they were forsaken, LA was the coup de grace". King was killed in Memphis and Kennedy in LA. But I only listen to the song (and sing it) I didn't write it....only the writer can tell us what he was referring to. Bad news in Santa Cruz: some of you Northern California Liners may have seen John's concerts at Palookaville, a local club. Owner Michael Horne announced last week that he is closing the club....sad for us.....it was a great place to see John, Dave and Buffy. Sad for the whole community as Michael tried to offer us a wide variety of music and artists. Good news in Santa Cruz: Robert Earl Keen, HERE, next Saturday. Michelle good luck with the house-hunting...ours cost less than $200,000 but it's small. We have been 'round and 'round about this one, Robert. The general consensus of the list members is that a little fluff is to be expected on this list. Everyone does their best to remember to send personal messages personally, but sometimes we forget or are just too lazy to replace the address in the "to:" field. Every once in awhile we get reminded (someone blows their top, or sends flames) and eveyone else says "oh, lighten up" and it calms down and we do better for awhile. I guess it's my responsibility to remind members of this every 3000 miles. Consider it done. As for the technical problems with Sofware Tool and Die in Boston (from where all your messages congregate and disseminate) they are aware of the problem, are working on the problem and (as usual) have no idea when the problem will be fixed. I guess we could look at it this way: Extra messages are better than lost ones, right? Well, take care all my little goslings. Keep following your mother, we'll make it home.
