As to the "Hot Dog" movie, it seems to me it was John playing the guitar on
"Dreamers on the Rise" and "Bringing Down the Moon" and Chuck McDermott
singing. John or someone can correct me if I'm mistaken. Kind of a lousy
movie though!

Here are a few more TV appearances:
Jonathan Winters Show - "Chilly Winds" and "Durango"
Rolling on the River - "Never Going Back" and ?
Nashville Now - "Botswana", "Children of the New Frontier", and "Sweet

Tonight Show with John Denver hosting
David Frost Show - "Rocks and Blues"
I also would question the date of the Blue Water White Death show. It seems
to me I saw that in the late 60's or early 70's. Maybe John could tell us.

He also said there is a similar UK collectable record magazine, but I don' t

John and Buffy were on the Steve Allen show in '68 - '69 in Los Angeles,
I think they did "Bolinas" and John was on the same show another time
doing a bare bones version of "Anna on a Memory". John was also on a
show with Robert W. Morgan, in LA. I forgot the name of the show, and I
had tuned in late, just caught the end of Buffy St. Marie doing a song,
and Robert and John (who seemed to be co-hosting) remarked how authentic
they thought she was. Al Adrian

Subject: "Taking My Road Away."
Hey all, Wingless here! I'm impressed by the response that has come about
concerning the "Stewart on T.V." I never knew how many shows John's music
has been on.
I wanted to relate an incident that happened yesterday while I
was doing housework As I was bending over some dirty dishes the song
"Road Away" came on. It's one of my favorites since the age of 13-14.
When the lyrics "Your taking my road away, ooooh road away, You got a
road of your own." came on I started to cry.
You see the "Boy of nine" who ran away was very much like me. I
ran away from home a few times because of my abuse. That wasen't the
biggest hurt. What hurt the most was the fact that like the boy in the
song, my parents didn't respect my feelings or privacy. Sorry to make
this so serious but as you all know John's songs have a profound effect
on my life.
As a teen when my parents were at work, I would close my
door(never lock it for I was not allowed to)and crank that song up. When
those lyrics about taking my road away came up I would just scream them
till I was horse. There are still times I do that. It's very healing.
Once again, I must thank John for presenting the right words to express
during a hard time of my life.

I left Columbus on my way to the Cleveland (Akron) show last Saturday but we
had a little car trouble in the rain on the way up and it ended up being too
late. I'd really like to know how the show went and if anyone has a playlist.
Cleveland's Scene Magazine called John Stewart the Grandfather of modern folk
singer/songwriters. They gave him a huge glowing review before the concert.
The follow up review should be out this week, if anyone sees it, please let
me know.
Thanks,
Nick.
P.S. does anyone have a recording of "Revenge of the Budgie"? I'll trade a
pretty decent copy of "Fire in the Wind" for it (gotta love that cover photo!).

Subject: Introduction
Hello,
I guess I've been asked to introduce myself, and explain why I'm here. Ny name
is Nick, folks on the internet started to call me NED (those are my initials
and part of an old e-mail address, the name sort of stuck).
When I was growing up, I had three uncles who were successful musicians. Two
were my Dads brothers, one played on the last two albums with "The
Outsiders", an old Cleveland Band. My Dad liked the Kinston Trio, and my
uncles liked John Stewart. When I was about 11 or so I got a copy of "Fire
in the Wind" from my
uncle. That was my first John Stewart album (white label promo :). They
really liked that album. I took one look at the cover and became convinced
that John Stewart was cooler than Fonzie or Peter Fonda.
Then I got an 8-track tape of "bombs away dream babies". As a normal part of
any adolescents musical development at that time I subsequently moved into
hard rock, then punk, then underground (which eventually became alternative)
then Jazz. I entirely forgot about John Steward until I developed a
temporary crush on Nanci Griffith. I saw one of his albums "Wingless
Angels" in the background of one of her albums. (If I hadn't been a
continuous LP buyer I probably would never have known what that was). Of
course he did a duet with her too.
Well, I went back to my dad's house and grabbed a couple of peach crates of
albums. The 8-track seemed to have vanished. I pulled out "Fire in the Wind" and
was quite astonished at what I heard. It totally captured the essence of the
1970's country cross-over scene like nothing I'd heard before. I love the
rhodes electric piano, (of course I come from a long line of lounge performers).
I still like that album a lot, although I have gotten a sideways look or two
when I tell that to other fans. I'm not sure what the consensus on it is.
Anybody have an opinion? I hope he does another rock record like that someday.
Anyways, I spent the rest of the 80s and 90s rummaging through record shows
and trying to get the rest of John Stewart's Albums. I don't have them all,
I have about 8. I also like "Punch the Big Guy" a lot. 'Bloodlines' is a
masterpiece but I think too many people like that one to the exclusion of
his other works and I don't know why. Maybe its all the suspended chords ;-)
I saw John Stewart live at Kent State and I he signed my copy of
"Punch the Big Guy". I sad thanks, and I was so happy I was speechless.
I may have him sign one of my 3 copies of "Fire in the Wind" next time.
I am 31 and I work at the Ohio EPA, and I'm taking classes at Ohio State.
I like to travel and collect music, and I have a web page at:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ubikk (the best page on there is
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ubikk/env5.htm). I used to fly small
planes but I don't anymore. I camp out west, and occasionally hop freight trains
around NE Ohio, NW PA, and W NY (My dad was an engineer and I worked on a RR
for a while, don't try this without a competent guide)
Thanks for having me along.
NED.

Subject: Nik Venet in ZigZag Review
Is anyone else struck dumb by the irony of Nik Venet's comments about
Bloodlines? He passionately rages on and on about the magical spontaneity of
those sessions, with John singing *live* with the band and the direct to two
track recording without overdubs, etc. (I whole-heartedly agree with him. I
still cry every time I listen to Mother Country on Bloodlines or sing it
myself. It is an incredibly moving album, utterly unique, a freak; a
miracle, really.)
The interview leaves all concerned yearning for a studio reunion between John
and Nik.
Then everyone's wish is granted and the outcome is the anti-Bloodlines,
Wingless Angels. Ain't no live singing on that album I can hear. Plenty of
overdubs, very little spontaneity or blurred edges. The Eagles made rougher
albums.
I've never heard what Nik had to say about Wingless Angels (IMHO *an album
full of great songs* but flawed production and vision). Has anyone heard form
Nik on this?
Sorry to flog a dead horse, but I'm still waiting for my Rough Sketches CD a

off of my good copy and send it to you, and you could send me a blank, or
a tape of something I don't have.
This was my favorite JS album when I was
about 11. It is certainly not like most of his other stuff it is on RSO,
the ultimate 70's California label ;-). I no longer have
a "favorite", since I realize that each one of his albums is a progression
in a long musical trip through rythym, poetry, geography, imagery, the
harmonic scale, and 20th century history - and can't be compared to the last.

Hi
Thanks for your comments re the ZigZag interview. Please correct me
if I am wrong but the next album Venet produced was not Wingless
Angels but was, in fact, Phoenix Concerts
Phoenix Concerts is still my favourite John Stewart album and must
rank of one of the best albums of all time. I think the versions of
songs on Phoenix concerts are much better than the versions on
California Bloodlines.
As for any comments by Venet regarding Wingless Angels; I'm looking

Gotta disagree with you on the Phoenix Concerts versions vs. Bloodlines
versions. Nothing against Phoenix Concerts - it's a great album. I just
think Bloodlines was something very special. Listening to the musician
credits on Never Goin Back gives me the chills, thinking about those

In 1962, when I was a teenager in Hartford CT, my family enjoyed the
"magical" experience of WHCT-TV channel 18, one of the the USA's first (if
not THE first) "pay TV" channel. For a period of several weeks, the station
ran "An Evening with The Kingston Trio" which was a complete live concert
(encores and all) recorded at Owings Mills MD. The songs were the standard
fare, featuring songs that were about to appear on Something Special. One
night, I draped the microphone from my reel-to-reel audio recorder over a
bar stool and recorded the concert. I've still got most of it. I don't
think the original video has ever been reissued, and I believe that Allan
Shaw reported that it has not ever been located.
The show was punctuated by an interview with the KT. It would be terrific
if that beauty was ever located. I was lucky to see it.

Yes,Patrick, we all have our favourites..personally, I am struggling

Hear, hear! Bob Elliot, you've once more provided us all a wonderful service.
I think one of the greatest aspects this piece brings us is the perspective
of a classic album from the producer's view. The artist himself has a very
distinct, often passionate direction he wants to take with a recording but
it's often up to the right producer to help realize the vision. John and
Nik seemed the right duo for "CB" as well as "The Phoenix Concerts" but then
comes "Wingless Angels" ... and yes, there must be a terrific tale to be
told about that marvelous work, too, considering what Venet said about true
artists' works, Picasso, et al.
And personally, I was knocked out by John G. Neihardt's comments about John,
too. I took one of Mr. Neihardt's "lectures" at Mizzou posthumously
(meaning him, not me). The whole semester was on videotape (one of his
students had the foresight to capture Neihardt's thoughts on videotape for
the U of MO) and I can honestly say it was one of the most singularly
incredible academic experiences of my life. Neihardt was the foremost
chronicler of the great Indian tribes ... having lived among them and know
their leaders ... and his connection with John comes more as a surprise
rather than a shock. Amazing ...

NED,
I've got four years on you, and I must have seen almost all John's tv
appearances, since my family watched most of those shows. I was just
reflecting, though, that i don't remember him on a single one of them. But
it does explain why the voice on "Gold" sounded so familiar the first time
i heard it. I nearly went crazy trying to place that voice for a while.

Let me suggest some additional 'reading' about Nik and John regarding the
"The Phoenix Concerts" production --
The 1974 Masters/Cookenboo Interview with John (as most of you know, having
taken place the day following the concert) as featured in the April '74 FLASH
magazine includes several questions by Hank Cookenboo about Nik producing Phx
Concerts -
.......how John felt about working with Nik again after 'California
Bloodlines', and John's assessment of Nik as a producer and how he was to
work with (along with John's brother Michael, Fred Carter and Peter Asher).
You can access the interview via Clack's Cellar (no more 'Corner'..!) or
directly at
http://members.aol.com/clackclack/phoenix.htm
Some interesting 'quick takes' on the people around John who helped produce
the albums.

Subject: Any K.T. Fan Pages?
Hey B.L.'s
Was wondering if anyone out there knew of any Kingston Trio fan
pages? I've seen some with their concert schedules but no actual fan
websites. There's gotta be some out there!

Yes, I definitely remember a Levi's Jeans commercial John did, but sorry, I
never recorded it. Did he do more than one?

Well,
It's not just the 4 years, it's WHICH 4 years you've got, I think they were
a decisive 4 years. Couple that with the fact that I don't think my family
got a TV until I was about 4 (it was a 24" B&W Zenith), and you've
technically got 8 years on me. :-)

Sure-- I'll post the song list, but it will have to wait until later this
month as I'm swamped at work right now. Send me a message on 6/19 as a
reminder and I'll take it from there.
Incidentally the concert was not the one on the Folk Era CD. Same general
time frame though.

Subject: Music Exchange
Hi,
I'm still kind of new here, but I'd like to try something. I'm a big music
collector. I'm curious what other kinds of music John Stewart fans are
listening to and what they would recommend specifically to other John
Stewart fans.
Here are two suggestions from my "attic". Two old fairly obscure folk artists
quite different from John, but I think complementary:
1. Aztec Two-Step : http://emusic.com/browse/0/35728/all1
A folk duo from around 1970. They have one really good album called
"Azec Two-Step" (my friend diescribed them as a cross between Simon&Garfunkle
and the "Jayhawks". I 'm not sure. Their album has just been re-released and
they have a couple newer ones I haven't heard yet.
2. Tom Rush : http://tomrush.com/index.html Really mellow folk guy from
New Hampshire. Totally laid-back, ethereal music. Except when he breaks
into the occasional blues-folk song. also been around since the 60s, also
has a small loyal following.
Just food for thought. I'd like to hear what else is in your attics.

Subject: Turning Levis into Gold
I posted the question to the AOL board about this Levi's commercial over a
year ago. I wasn't sure that John had done it. I never saw a TV commercial -
only a radio spot. It was very obviously John's voice or an impersonator. I
practically drove off the San Rafael bridge when it popped on the radio one
day. I only heard it a couple times and was never able to confirm that it was
John until last year. The year must have been about 79 when I was living in
Rodeo, spending a lot of time over in Marin with friends (and visiting my
dear Melanie in Berkeley) at the time in the East Bay.
This is a dim memory, but John's voiceover went something like: "San
Francisco. 1849. They were looking for gold...."
