First - welcome aboard LA Hazard =

(interesting name, is L.A. a hazard or just hazardous?,
I know NY is a hazard but...)

Second - my note about the Cashes - of course I meant May 96 not 95
at the Old Vienna in Mass also I never could spell---

Third - They're ALL my favorite lyrics.

Fourth - Thanks to everyone for the Sing My Heart Away lyric,
I've got to admit that I didn't hear it - but now I do.

Michelle - are you moved yet? - I've lost track of your schedule.

Roy in Rhode Island - a real hazard.

Roy -- did you get an answer to the missing line??

A voice on the radio it knows my name
Like the songs ????????
Music on the radio is not the same
As the songs I heard when your eyes met mine.

"Sing My Heart Away" is one of my all time favorite songs but the missing
phrase is driving me nuts!! If you got an answer, could you post it,
please?

Thanks! Sue Krebs

Just a polite recommendation to drwatsup: It is not very good practice
to post someone's phone numbers to a mailing list, as mailing lists
sometimes get unsavory individuals we don't know about, such as the
recent flame-thrower we just had, and it just is not good etiquette. In
the future, if you're passing addresses and phone numbers around, I'd
suggest to do it via private e-mail to whomever asks.
While I'm posting, I've noticed a few new subscribers, some of which are
musicians. In case you're not aware, we are doing a tribute CD for John.
If you are interested in participating, email me privately at
RCaplow@decisive.com, and I will fill you in with the details.

Subject: AN OFFER YOU CAN'T REFUSE

ATTENTION BLOODLINERS

I have been in contact with John's agent (Mr. Gordon) and with John's
concurence I am formulating a plan for a Bloodliners
Weekend/Concert/Songwriter's workshop here in the cool pines of Chama,
NM over Labor Day Weekend (Aug 29 - Sept 1) .

OK, I hear your question ...."Where?" Get out your Rand McNally
Atlas.... Chama is in north-central New Mexico due north of Santa Fe,
just south of the Colorado border. At an elevation of almost 8000 ft,
it's nomally a great place to spend the last weekend of summer. With
Mr. Stewart in attendance, it's an offer you can't refuse!

In addition to the nice cool weather, Chama is home to America's Most
Spectacular narrow gauge steam railroad, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR
(now how's that for a blatant plug - keep reading though).

So,.... here's the deal. In addition to the concert and the workshop,
we are planning a dinner and an all-day ride on the RR - both of which
John will be invited to participate in.

The cost for this program would be $75.00 per person or $ 125.00 per
couple. Train tickets, dinner, lodging, etc. would be extra. We are
toying with the idea of creating a package deal which would include
rental car from Albuquerque, NM (nearest gateway city) as well as
lodging, dinner, train tickets. In short, participants would arrange
thier own transportation to ABQ, we would handle the rest.

Tentative Itinerary:

Fri, Aug 29: Travel to ABQ and Chama. Informal get-together that
evening in Chama.

Sat. Aug 30: Ride C&TS RR (all day 10AM - 4:30PM). Dinner at 6:00PM.
Concert Starting at 8:00PM.

Sun. Aug 31: Songwriter's Workshop - time TBA.

Mon. Sept. 1: Return Home or do other stuff (like see Taos, Santa Fe,
Durango, CO, etc.)

In order for all of this to happen and to make it worth John's time, I
will need a minimum of 60 dedicated Stewartistas to sign up. As we are
only talking 90 days in the future, I need some immediate feedback. In
order to handle what I hope will be a mountain of email, I have set up a
seperate email address. Please write to:

JSweekend@webtv.net.

Also, if you have any ideas how to help promote this event, SPEAK UP.

....cool weather (high temp of 75, - sure beats 115+ in PHX), pine
trees, clean mountain air, cool old steam trains...and an evening - or
two - with John Stewart...what a way to end a summer!!!!!!!!!

For Sue and anbody else mildly interested..

Two good replies to my question about Sing My Heart Away
(Live at the Turf available from Folk Era - where's my fee Ian?)

From Gordon Kent:

I think the missing lyric is

  "The songs that Boudeleaux rhymed"
as in Boudeleaux Bryant the songwriter.

From Charlie Woodward:

Roy, I hear it as "the songs of Boudeleau Bryant" but I'm not sure.

I'm playing the song as I write this and I'm more inclined to go
along with Gordon.

Sue, our only hope is that Angelbravo will read this and set
us all straight - it will probably turn out to be

'the songs a poodle would write' or something.

Please John or Dave - don't leave us hanging -

what is the correct lyric

In actuality, I AM a NY Hazard - born out on the Island - back in '50.

And I'm sure you could get takers for both sides regarding LA.

The first time I ever signed as L A Hazard - someone responded....."Isn't
that redundant?"

For me however, The L is for Louis and the A is for Albert

One of my earliest memories involves my first grade teacher - Miss Butts
(really) - she had the habit of writing each child's name on the board as
we introduced ourselves that first day. When it came to my turn she wrote
it this way.......

Lou is A. Hazard

(I still think she should have paid for some of the therapy!) ;-)

Of course the real clicker came when I graduated from High School in '68.
The man announcing our names as we crossed the stage was Austrian - spoke
with a VERY thick accent. He was my German teacher and we got along well.
Being '68 and all - there was a lot of controversy with the school board
and long hair (damn hippies!) -

So when he announced me as Louise Alberta Hazard -

I thought it was an hilarious post-script to the previous twelve years.

They got me coming and going! ;-)

Oh well....

My son at least grew up during the days of the Dukes of Hazzard - and had
it a little bit easier.

Thanks for the welcome!

Subject: Re: Why are we here & Fred's questions

Bloodliners,

I have found myself lurking the last few weeks, as I have found myself
needing to pound the pavement for work -- my teaching position was
"absorbed" in the rearrangement of courses and schedules for next year.
So, rather than let anger govern my posts (I'm still pretty p.o.'d about
it all), I thought I'd wait.

My situation is one reason why we're here -- to share how John's music
helps us all over life's little speed bumps. Of course, my situation
pales next to Robert's. I was moved incredibly by your story, Robert,
and I was further moved by John's reply and offer to bring your
collection up to date. Class defined!

For a long time "Cannons in the Rain" was my favorite of JS' albums.
Now it alternates between "Airdream Believer" and "Rough Sketches." My
first listen to RS left me a little indifferent, but it has really grown
on me. But AB really finds the CD player regularly. I also listen to
"Deep in the Neon" and "Lost Songs" fairly frequently.

Like Fred (my old Vietnam buddy), I am interested in the evolution of
songs, both artistically and technically. As John said, changes are
just that -- changes. Sometimes it's to try something new, sometimes
just something different. "July, You're a Woman" every night for 30
years, played the same way? No way! The Big Guy would go nuts! That's
why I loved seeing the Trio and John in concert -- they never did the
same songs exactly the same way twice. For the casual fan, they
probably sounded just like the records, but for us fanatics Trioistas,
Stewartistas), we could tell the difference. John now takes that idea
even further in evolving his songs, and taking us along for the ride.

As to the great "Evangeline" debate, I prefer the RS version to Bandera,
because of the major versus minor key. And I happen to like the way the
drum comes in at the end (sorry, Fred). I haven't been able to discern
much difference in any of the cassette / CD cuts on RS, except for
"Interview with an Angel." I haven't decided about that song yet --
they're just different to me, neither one better or owrse than the
other.

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I had introduced some of John's
songs to my students. Some of them went to the U2 concert when they cam
through. They said they got really excited when they did "Daydream
Believer!" It was those kids and the connection we made (partly with
the help of JS' music) that has helped me cope with my dismissal. They
were probably more upset than I was!

We're here because we care -- about humanity, about each other, and
about an artist who truly binds us together. Just being fans isn't
enough. I've lurked in AOL's MMC folders for Mary Chapin Carpenter and
Nanci Griffith, and I don't get the same feeling of family, of community
that I do here. Maybe it's the lifelong struggles we've edured just
finding John's music over the years that has made us better people.

Thanks for enduring my ramblings -- I guess I save up and let go with an
epic every few months!

other"

I loved reading about favorite lines and lyrics. Besides those already

I still can remember Pa coming home drunk with the boys from the union hall
station
And it's hard to believe all the words we all read "We are living in God's
favorite nation"
And I knew he was ill from the size of his pills, but he choked on the
preacher's salvation
And I know that his blood it still flows in my veins as I fall for each
blue-eyed temptation

Was it you all along, good Jesus?
Were you all along the right way?
Oh, you told me you were
But the writing was blurred
The people who told me they twisted your words
Crying "Burn, child, burn"

Miss America, I got your game, it's a Christian burlesque show
Feeding their eyes on your sweet young thighs, pretending, yeah, that you
don't know

A while back I promised to post the playlist from the John Stewart concert
broadcast live from the Troubadour on KDAY (AM 1580) in L.A. October 14,
1971:

Touch of the Sun
Just an Old Love Song
Bring It On Home
Little Road
Light Come Shine
California Bloodlines (with the then-new final verse -- "Wonder where we
were," etc.)
Wolves in the Kitchen (brought down the house, as always)
WIllard
Never Goin' Back
Alligator Man (Chris Darrow solo)
July You're a Woman (with "Fresno Mister" instead of Seattle in the intro)
Shackles & Chains
Mother Country

Some hilarious commentary by John--including a monologue about dating a girl
who later became a nun and who, at the drive-in, refused all advances and
"couldn't have been pried off the car door by prison authorities".

About two months ago on the show "Renagade"(U.S.A. Network) the

"Lonsome Picker" as he was washing off the dirt from a tussel with a bad

Have you ever seen a movie called "Hot Dog, The Movie" . It's a zany teen
radical skiing flick, which features one of the main characters playing the
guitar to his romantic interest and singing "Dreamers On The Rise". Then,
there's "Smokey & The Bandit III" . There's two Stewart songs in that
movie. I believe the ending theme is "Midnight Wind" Wish I could see
some of those old Smothers Bros. shows that John was on. If anyone out
there has any of these, please let me know! Can any of you think of more
of John's work that has been featured in the media?

Both the show on Saturday and the evening get together were great! Both were
full houses - about 30 of us at the party (max allowed) and I would estimate
300 at the show. Pete Crossland organized the whole weekend and originated
the entire concept. I think John was pleased as were all who attended. Most
of us at the get together were a bit shy about talking or asking questions so
John sang and carried the load by himself. Perhaps it might have been a good
idea to write down some questions ahead of time that John could reply to.

John remarked he was sick on Friday night but if he had not mentioned it
onstage no one would have know it by his performance. The nature center he
was at was a perfect facility for the show.

An interesting (to me) tidbit. John told about how his father was a trainer
of harness race horses and that he spent some of his youth working with the
horses. I was shocked because harness racing is a real passion of mine, in
fact I have a horse who will be racing soon named after one of JS songs
"Reason to Rise". Sent John a photo and promised him I would keep him up to
speed on Reasons progress.

Hope this answers some of your questions about Ohio.
