Subject: Saturday night, wheels along the boulevard
The Queen of Hollywood High is one of the finest crafted pop tunes in Mr
Stewart's repertoire. With the heat of summer coming on here in the west it
would be a treat to hear John give new life to this song in shows. This is a
song that "shoulda been a contender". Can't figure why it wasn't a hit in the
early 80's except that I can only guess the album got little promotion from
Allegiance. I know I played the hell out of it. The Blondes album is THE
documentary of the Stewart/McDermott collaboration.
Go pull out that lp. Try and keep still while that song is playing. It gives
me dancing feet.
But listen to the way the song is crafted. This song is like an anthem to the
car culture and longing of youth, out on the cruise. It doesn't matter if you
were in So Cal or up here in the north on the El Camino. Fire up the mustang.
You're sitting there in the lot, at a slow idle. The song begins. Slow and
upbeat.
"Saturday night, wheels along the boulevard,
you're looking alright,
'cause love don't come that hard to the Queen of Hollywood High"
... You're watching the girls drive by or walking down the boulevard...
you slip into gear, pull out onto the street, the pace of the song steps up
and the bass comes walking in,
"the boys are on the move, hustling the boulevard,
she knows she could lose, still she never gets that far,
the Queen of Hollywood High"
and that twangy Joe Southish lead guitar wraps around the end of the lines.
Then some of that magical Stewart imagery...
"There are spirits taking flight,
and wings across the boulevard
They're dancing in the night...."
And we haven't even gotten to the Linda Ronstadt harmonies. I really like how
Linda's voice hangs in the back and then soars on some of the lines.
Yeah, there are great lines in a lot of Stewart's songs, but this is a song
that feels good and was put together very well.

I've been enjoying the favorite-lyrics thread and wanted to jump in while
several of my faves remain unmentioned:
``Only once around and they nail the top down on the long wooden box in
the ground.'' (Should be taped to the bathroom mirror and read each
morning.)
``You got to know how to hold a stogie, keeping it dry through the wind and
rain.'' (Because, really, who else would have written this?)
``La-da-da-da-da-da'' (I've occasionally played the game of trying to
figure out lyrics that would have worked better. Conclusion: none.)
``Earth-bound ships on a four-lane sea.'' (The man has a knack for highway
metaphors.)
``...a rider on her two-lane rodeo.'' (The man has a knack for highway
metaphors.)
``It's something how your life will fall as to how the heart is tossed.''
(Aint it?)
``I live in California, I can look out at the ocean, the silver blue
Pacific, it is always there to see/But I'm so busy working, that I don't
have time to see it, but it's the knowing that it's there that means a lot
to me.'' (Volunteered by my wife as her favorite. She has excellent taste.)
``Wish I were a headlight on a west-bound train.'' (Perhaps my favorite.
The
perfect capturing of wanderlust.)
And so many more. The guy really is a national treasure. -- Don

This is VERY difficult.... had to weed out a lot. Here's my highly
edited version:
Julie get the gun, Julie throw it in the river let it roll, far on out
to sea, let it carry the confusion, the hatred and the worry here in me
running down a mustang what'll it take a pickup and a gun
still it's only wishing, and I know it's nothing more
then you came along, loving me for what I am
and Ludi was crying she told me she ran all the way
you long to see Cheyenne, and its alright, its alright with me
it was Bobby's song, that I wrote without trying every word, every word
now that Bobby's gone it was my way of crying when I heard
a dream went down on a hotel floor, but dreams are what we're living for
clean your guns the battle's over, they belong now to the wind
Spirit you moved on the land of my father
time moves like a river...a wise man learns to forgive her for all she's
done to him
oh I live in California, I can look out at the ocean, on the silver blue
Pacific, it is always there to see
in the words of Harry Truman give 'em hell and give 'em more
have you seen any angels who got lost in the wind, I'd give anything to
see her again
And since I've closed with "Evangeline" I guess I'll cast my vote at the
same time....I love the "Rough Sketches" version....seems perfect to me.

I just finished reading the 1977 interview with John and it brought back some
incredible memories! They mention a show John did at the Other in NYC. I
attended that show and will never forget it!
John was actually the opening act for some group whose name I forget. The
funny thing was that nearly everyone in the audience was there to see John.
Each did two sets and I remember that the "headliners" almost didn't come
out for their second show because all the audience wanted to hear was John.
I talked to a guy in the audience who dropped in to see John - he was playing
at another club on Bleeker St. and ducked in between his sets to see John.
As I recall, John hadn't performed in NYC for something like six years. I
had moved to NYC from California in 1974 and was going through withdrawl
pains not getting to see him every few months. I was one who used to go to
every show at the Troubador for a week! Once before John had been booked in
NYC at the Bottom Line and cancelled at the last minute due to illness. I
found out when I got there for the show - I thought I was going to die! I
think John was scheduled to open for the Dirt Band that evening. Was there
another NYC cancellation as well, John? Perhaps on some big holiday maybe at
the Speakeasy? I think I remember that as well.
One last memory of the Other End show. I was sitting right next to the stage
and either John's drummer on the other group's drummer knocked over a drum
stand or cymbal and bashed me right on the head!
I also remember hearing Ian Tyson's first in a long time performance in NYC
at the Other End with Tom Russell opening for him - what a show that was!
Sorry for rambling!

Subject: Trio TV Offering
Has anyone else seen the offering of yet another compilation of 60's folk
material on TV? I think it's a Time/Life issue and features several Trio
songs - MTA, Tom Dooley and Where Have All the Flowers Gone, I think.
Nothing unusual here except that there is a short video clip of the Trio
doing Where Have All the Flowers Gone. I for one would love it if whoever
has control of the old Trio video clips (Frank Werber maybe?) would decide to
release a collection of them. Any chance Folk Era would ever do anything
like that? Is there enough footage around to attempt it? I was converted to
John just after the Trio broke up and never saw them perform, so I would love
such a video.

Subject: How About A Good Song?
I've been reading the neat "lyrics" exchange and thought I might go one
step further with a whole song. Lyrics are meaningful but for em it's
the wholeness of a JS song that moves my soul.
I had this song going through my mind during the last presidential
election. I think it fits concerning the rediculas mudslinging. Gets
right to the heart of the matter. Do others agree?
Storeis Of Old
I don't want to hear your stories of old
Don't show me your golden chains
For if there's just one man in this whole wide land
And he is living in pain
Oh then freedoms not your name
You told me of a dream that I would surly like to see
Where each man can keep the wolves from his door
But then I saw an old man without a dollar in his hand
Saying, you don't need me anymore.
i guess you just don't need me anymore.
(CHORUS)
We've got a lot of pride that I can't deny
From those who bore us liberty
But if freedoms at the door and we let it wait somemore
Oh I wonder how proud they are of me?
I wonder just how proud they are of me
Go ahead and walk away
Yes turn your back and say
We'll show them who's got who on the run
But if we can talk with folks out there
We might get somewhere
And maybe someday we can throw away these guns
Someday we can throw away these guns
I don't want to hear your stories of old
Don't show me your golden chains
For if there's just one man
In this whole wide land
And he is living in pain
Oh then freedoms not your name
If there's just one man
In this whole wide land
And he is living in pain
Oh then freedoms not your name

Sorry about last night.....Anyway, I was excited to foind out John was

never have I heard BOTH of them together without a band of some sort.....Tix

I think I told you before that JODI is for head trauma victims. I usually
only go crazy and give money for Vietnam Vets and abused kids (which is the
same thing if you think about it) yet I know some people in this program and
I'm proud to recommend it, for whatever that's worth.
Now, let me get this out, too....So far, everybody that likes CD's and not
vinyl have E-mailed me directly....let's keep it that way!!! This is NOT the
place for that debate. AND, yes, of course I have all of the "stuff" of my
favorites in CD format, I just don't like the fact that we're NOT given a
choice of my preferred format. They just DO sound better on vinyl, and I WILL
continue to push all of John/Trio/Chapin's "stuff" because it's that good. I
just don't like having to pay for an extra song or two "bonus" that sounds
better on vinyl, O.K.???
Let's move on....Since I came on line, There have been MANY people that have
written what I felt VERY eloquently, including when I disagreed. I think
that's another reason people are "lurkers" vs. respondents. That's probably
why all of us are so much into the music we're into. Every writer writes
something we can either identify with or it just makes us feel good to sing,
hum or whistle to.
I'm the greybearded guy with the John Stewart gold and blue tour jacket that
a lot of you have seen at shows over the years....(I can hear it now..OH,
THAT guy!!!)
Anyway, good talking to you today and hope I'll be talking to more of you
either on
the phone, in my store, or at ANY of John's shows!!!
John....a personal note/tribute here:
" Children in <America> are taught in their schools
Believe in the Country, Don't break any rules,
But the T.V.'s on, and they know something's wrong,
Someone must tell them to keep pushing on....."
KEEP PUSHING JOHN!!!!
"You are the heartbeat that keeps us alive"

NEWS FLASH!
1974 INTERVIEW WITH JOHN STEWART NOW ON CLACK'S CORNER
Just received word from Ron that the post-Phoenix Concerts magazine interview
is now up on Clack's Corner for all to read and enjoy!
******** http://members.aol.com/clackclack/phoenix.htm
(also as a link off the main page as a "WHAT'S NEW")
As you recall, I first mentioned this article on the March chat, then
provided several "questions and John's answers" to whet your appetite.
Now, thanks to Ron's tireless, 'labor of love' efforts, all Bloodliners and
fans everywhere can have the pleasure of looking back 23 years. . .and
reading John's thoughts on the day following the concert recording about this
first live album on his own, previous albums, producers and musicians,
ideas for songs, etc, etc.
Interviewed by Lee Masters and Hank Cookenboo (local media types), it
appeared in the April, 1974 issue of FLASH magazine. FLASH was one of
several entertainment-type monthlies publishing here in the Phoenix area.
In addition to the interview, Hank Cookenboo provided an interesting review
of the actual concert, and the making of the album. One of his remarks kept
within the times of the early '70s gas crisis when he talked about returning
borrowed JS albums. . ."depriving a John Stewart fan of an album is like
depriving America of fuel"...!
There also are graphics in the original article, which Ron will input into
C/Corner sometime in the future. He just felt that the text itself needed to
be online now.
Please join me in thanking two guys who made this site possible - first,
to Tom Story.
Tom is a professional photographer, and an early JS follower, here in the
Phoenix area. (It's his photo of John in cowboy hat and shades, on stage,
taken at a Big Surf concert that appears on page 3 of the interview
article.)
I met Tom at a business mixer several months ago, and one conversational
thread led to another which led to. . well, when two longtime JS fans here in
the town he once 'owned' meet, you know the ending! He mentioned this
interview, and I immediately thought of B'Lines and the web sites. Thanks a
million, Tom, for bringing it out of your archives in the closet...and to my
attention.
Second, to Ron. . . for about the millionth time, my true appreciation goes
out for all your efforts. Like the rest of us, time spent on 'Lines is
personal and of the discretionery type. Thanks for taking a summer Sunday
morning to put it up on Clack's.
. . .and BTW, thanks also for your friendship these past months. It's been
just a lot of fun working with you on this.
I have one more li'l piece of unfinished business. Toward the end of the
concert review, Cookenboo mentions the girl in the audience who shouted out
"Where's your hat, John?"
I just wonder. . . *where* is she now?!
For me. . .I consider this to be one more chapter in the captain's diary of
the 'Blood Vessel. . .a channel marker of routes once taken.. .and of a port
call to be remembered
throughout future passages.
Read and enjoy.........................Rick

Airdream was out before the wedding.
That was also the first time I heard (and was blown away by) the

It was a bleeding ulcer and my buddy the Dr who was with me that
night listened to John's explanation and later told me that Aleve and

Buffy was with John that night too and I requested 'Sing My Heart Away"
which they kindly did as an encore. Now here's my lyric question

Subject: Favorite Lyrics and Introduction
First, I would like to say hello to all of you.
I am a 46 year old RN working in the field of Mental Health. I have been a
singer/songwriter since 1970 - playing up and down the east coast during
the early-to-mid 70's. Mostly on street corners and in the subways - with a
few "real" gigs. Then I pulled a Rimbaud. ("He didn't know how to have fun,
but he was cool!")
Now and days I play for the patients and occasionally elsewhere. ("You
wonder what would have happened had you gone the other way.")
My first introduction to John's music was back in the early 60's. My sister
brought home three albums and announced that the entire family WOULD sit
down and listen! They were albums by Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and
The Kingston Trio. ("And there are strange rivers. And we're sailors, you
and me.")
I listened to everything I could get my hands on. Then I lost touch with
John's music in the mid 70's. Caught up in strange rivers. Then in the late
80's - after my world came crashing down - I "happened" across Punch The
Big Guy. The old zen concept of when the student is ready hit home.
"Oh there is a train and it runs by my room
And it wakes me up in the middle of the night
At the arch of the rising moon
It says do you know who you are
Do you know where your going
Will you survive, yeah
In the fire when the wind is blowing?
And there is a train, And it runs by my room
And the train is called reality and it's coming way too soon
Way too soon - for a guy - Who is living on the lies
Looking for the shortcut and the secret to survive."
"And there is a choice....."
Perhaps one of the small pleasures I have enjoyed most over the past few
years, has been the opportunity to experience John's older works for the
first time.
I look forward to getting to know you all, and I hope that I will be able
to contribute to the list in a positive way.
L.A.Hazard
"It's time I should be thankful
For all that I have got
Instead of bitching and complaining
Of all that I have not."
"How could I ever fail to see Rainbows in the skies?"
P.S. Just picked up Rough Sketches and The Phoenix Concerts - Live. WOW!
What pleasures!

Welcome aboard! I'm known as the "Wingless Angel Who Surivives" 'bout
these parts. I joined the list about a week ago and have met some really
nice people.
I would be interested in knowing more about your music. I used to play
guitar until I fractured my right pinkie. Most K.T. stuff. Also, if it's
still floating about, you may want to check out my piece called "My
Personal Journey". Unfortunatly, I didn't save it.
In a nutshell. I was abused as a child and John's music, as well as the
K.T. were the center for my sanity. I was glad you posted the Strange
Rivers lyrics as well as Ticket To The Stars. Another wonderful healing
song is Reason To Rise. I was going through some tough times awhile
back, well even feeling suicidal to a point and each morning before I
did anything else I played that song. It gave me a focus to continue the
day in a positive way. Hell, any K.T. or Stewart song can do that.
Haven't had a chance to get "Sketches" but pheonix concert is a mind
blower! I'm glad it's out on CD. My LP was worn down to it's last as I
used to play that all the time!
Best Wishes,
Wingless Angel Still Surviving(Robert)

Note from the BFD (Bloodlines Fire Department)"
This guy subscribed for two days and then unsubbed. He's flame bait through
and through. Take heart that each subscriber must be approved by me and can
be unsubbed by me (or Ron) at any time. Pretty sad that there are people in
this workd who have nothing better to do than stir up trouble.... we can
make plenty of our own without tht guy's help, right?
(...not that there;s anything *wrong* with that...

PS I guess I should have noted his screen name (blaster) before I subbed him:

Subject: Rough Sketches reverb
OK, OK, I love AB's music (got to touch that base before proceeding
<g>) and all and have favorite lyrics and songs.
But...
Been listening to Rough Sketches. Excellent writing, and I'd love to
hear the whole opera. However, I think the production on the first two
tracks way over did the reverb. I found that, to my ear, it got in the
way of hearing his voice. One of the critical features of Rough Sketches
is the sound (I inadvertently typed a "w" for the "s" and it worked, but
I changed it back to avoid confusing myself) of his voice, which to me
sounds wearied by the road.
Any other points of view on this? BTW, I'm listening to the CD version.
Some folks were talking about the difference between the casette and CD;
for those of you who have heard both, does the difference effect what
I'm talking about.

Hi Gordon,
Great idea!! Theres a terrific Jack Benny show where the Stewart Trio do
"I'm goin' home" and "Tijuana Jail"....the latter is even a subject of a
long skit featuring the Trio and Mel Blanc....what a classic!
