In response to your post:
1. "Why are you here? What do you gain from being a part of this group?
Do you mostly lurk? Why do you lurk and not post?" you asked.
I have been mostly a lurker since shortly after joining the group in
March, but I have greatly enjoyed observing the conversations, discussions
and arguments that have ensued over that period. Part of the reason I have
contributed as little as I have, is because my knowledge of John's music
since Bombs Away Dream Babies is almost no-exsistent. I still haven't begun
trying to catch up on the new stuff and can't seem to decide whether to start
where I left off and work forward, or start with Rough Sketches and work
backwards. (This was a subject that many Bloodliners gave me some opinions
on when I first joined the group.)
Anyway, not to go on forever, I have enjoyed the lurking and eventually
hope to become a bigger participant in the group. I almost dropped out
myself during the debate over Dr de Lavoris or whatever, simply because I was
getting too much e-mail to be able to read it all carefully. I may still
move to the disgest form, but I've really liked getting to know so many of
you from a distance that I would hate to do that.
Still, I love the list and have grown to love many of it's members and I
have been inspired to discover John's new music because of the passion so
many of you have for it.
Later, I'll respond to some of the other questions you asked in the
post, but for now I just want to say that you Michelle, do a great job
running this thing and my Stetson, (if I still wore one) is off to you. It's
great that you've provided a meeting place for so many wingless angels . . .
Later,
George

Peter..I have only seen copies at record fairs, charity shops and
markets, now, its pretty old (but good). Maybe someone out there has a
duplicate!! Sorry. If I ever see any i'll buy 'em all and make a fortune
(NOT REALLY,ITS A JOKE!! JOKE!!) .
Actually, don't you just hate it when there are alternative versions, or
compilations, that you can't get hold of because you live in a different
country .My project is to find a copy of "John Stewart with the Kingston
Trio" an Australian Compilation.
As for looking in second hand record shops..there is NOTHING more
important than that!!

Speaking of used record shops, the last time I was in Tracks in Wax
(Central Ave. in Phoenix), there was a copy of "The Lonesome Picker
Rides Again" including the insert with lyrics. Didn't buy it because my
copy is still in pretty good shape. Besides - I also have the CD. If
anyone's interested, I'll pick it up for you - assuming it's still
there.
Looking forward to June 15th at Anderson's. Trying to round up some
additional support. I figure, if we get them there - we got 'em!

Hi Rod
You have just jogged my memory. I used to have the "Australian
Compilation" but for the life of me can't think what happened to it.
I'll have to get up there in the attic tomorrow and have a good look.

Hi David
The version of Wheatfield Lady you refer to is available on an album
called "Forgotten Songs of Some Old Yesterday", which is a
compilation of songs from other albums. (See under 'Discography' at
my website for track listing).
Also, at the time, there was a studio version of Runaway Fool of Love
which, to my knowledge, has never been released on an album: would
love to get my hands on this one.

Just kidding, of course (I hope!).
Perhaps trying to define things too closely is counterproductive; a
general focus on John Stewart serves to pull us all together but there's
a lot of room for parabolas of varying shapes. The thing is, it's about
Angel Bravo, but he's not about one thing. As near as I can tell from my
contacts with him, he: sings, writes songs, writes prose, teaches
creativity, gets pissed off, laughs, delights in others' creativity,
believes in some things passionately, types poorly, is gratious with
children who send wierd email (and some adults, as well) and a bunch of
other stuff (don't want to get too personal or analytical-have to start
charging by the hour...). There's a certain amount of eclectic
creativity around him and maybe this list will reflect that.
Which might be fine, and even fun. A simple fan list would get dull
(yes, yes, the greatest living... Yeah, right, so what else is new?) but
getting too far out on the orbit will result in breakaway escape
velocity, so maybe Michelle can pull us back in (gently) when we begin
to get too far out of bounds.
Or, "Let it run, lemme see the big list run!" (Ouch! Sorry, sorry,
Angel Bravo, it is one of my favorites, tears to the eyes and all, but
it is Friday, and after a week of working for Uncle for too little
against odds that are too much, I tend to get a little goofy...)

Subject: RE: Why are we here?
Michelle and fellow bloodliners, my replies are below.
But what does that actually mean to each
of you? Why are you here? What do you gain from being a part of this group?
I haven't philosophised or tripped about it. I'm here because i enjoy
it. It's relaxing after working so hard all day. I love John. So do you
all. We have a common bond. It's fun. That's all.
Do you mostly lurk? Why do you lurk and not post? (I guess we won't get
answers from those of you for whom this is true, but I encourage the
lurkers to post).
I mostly lurk. I don't have a lot of time to post. Also I don't want to
contribute "noise" to the discussions. Discussions re bootlegs and such
i've been through on other lists and get tired of posting my opinions on
the issues. Though I will say this: Bootlegs of demos are a reality that
do happen. But don't stick it right under the artist's nose. That's just
not right.
Have you found this medium to be a free flow of ideas?
Yes.
Do you feel
comfortable expressing your opinions, especially if they won't be met with
agreement from the more prolific posters?
Yes.
What does IMHO mean to you and should it need to be stated?
It means you're trying to not come across as a pompous ass about what
you are stating. If it's understood amongst everybody that we're not
pompous asses, it probably doesn't need to be stated.
Do you belong to any other mailing lists that
have more focus? How is that focus expressed? Should we have more focus,
less focus, no focus?
No, my other mailing list, Al Stewart, has less focus. They talk about
everything under the sun. I've been on it for years. We're like a
family, squabbles and all. Focus is fine how it is. I wouldn't try to
monitor the list so much. Just let it be. If people go, they go. More
come. Some of us stay.
What are the advantages of this list over a list-serve (the aol folder)?
N/A. I'm on the internet. I'm not on AOL. For those of us connected
directly, it is our only way to be with you.
Is there anything you'd like to change about this list, or it's focus?
No. Michelle, you're doing an outstanding job with this list. Just
relax. People will not change even if we try to make them. This is
evidenced by the ASML, where new people came on and were given the
nicknames of "topic police". People post what they want when they want.
It's a dynamic that is its own natural beauty and shouldn't be changed.
That's what I think.

I have no rigid set of expectations but I do have a wish: that we treat
each other kindly even when we disagree. I have no need for greater
focus, if I find a post uninteresting I delete it and move on. I did
come here hoping to connect with other Stewart-lovers. Fortune smiled on

am continually grateful for the kindness they show me.

OK, here's another thread, offered as an alternative to the Great Bootleg
Debate ( no disrespect intended).
Has anyone mentioned Steven Bishop's book, "Songs In The Rough". Our Guy is
featured in there, for Daydream Believer. Bishop tells the story behind a
number of famous hits and reprints the original written version, whether it
appeared on a used airline ticket or a sheet of legal tablet paper.
It's a nifty book. There is a new version which includes a CD of the
"original" version of each song. DBeliever is included. Haven't heard it, but
I bet it's not the "funky" version (but rather the Monkees version, which
made our guy mucho dinero over the years).
Also, anyone ever opined as to the influence that John apparently had on Mike
Nesmith of that Other Group? I think I see it, in the off-center humor, the
penchant for songwriting, etc.
Whatever.

Subject: Re: Why are we here?
Hi Michelle, and all the rest of us Stewartistas,
A really good question Michelle. For me, the Bloodlines list is an
important part of my life, in that I have finally found a group of people who
seem to have had similar experiences listening to the music of John Stewart.
I have been listening to John's music since the late fifties, and in every
album of his that I have listened to, there has been at least one, and
usually several songs that speak directly to a particular experience in my
life at that moment, usually showing me a new or different way to see that
experience, and to grow from it in a positive way. There are a number of
people, past and present, who have done that for me, but no one does it as
consistantly or as clearly for me as John. Additionally, some of his music
is just so good, it gets me moving physically, and I think that's way cool.
What I have discovered since last summer, when I discovered this
"community", is that I really like being able to interact with all of us. I
don't agree with what everybody says, and I don't want to. I don't want
everybody to agree with me. That would be very boring, and besides, I've
been wrong before, and probable will be again. How will I know, unless some
one presents their ideas to me. I feel like I've made some good friends and
I want to continue making more. That's what this list means to me. I like
that the initial link we have is John's music, and that John interacts with
us, and that we can talk about other things also. I really have no interest
in guitar strings, but some do, and I think it's great that they can talk
about that freely. We all get to participate to what ever level we want.
Good for us.

Information, for one thing, and a connection with people who share my
interest in the music of John Stewart. I've missed a lot of that over the
last 15 years (yeah, I'm waaaaay behind, but after I left the Bay Area some
years ago, "genteel poverty" was about the best way to describe my lifestyle
for a long time, and records and concerts just weren't in the budget!). What
better way to catch up than by hearing the comments and insights of others
more knowledgeable than myself? (Yes, I know... buying the CDs & tapes works
too...and I am, I am.)
>>Do you mostly lurk?<< Yup.
>>Why do you lurk and not post?<<
Because if you can't say something nice .... (Joke!! That's a joke!! No
flames, OK?) Actually, I seem to come in a step late on most of the topics,
so while I certainly have an opinion on the animal rights/bootleg issues that
have dominated this space in the short time I've been on, other posts have so
closely mirrored my views that I'd just be cluttering up the area with
repetitive verbiage. Aside from that, the few music-related posts I've read
are still kinda over my head.
>>Do you feel comfortable expressing your opinions, especially if they won't
be met with agreement from the more prolific posters?<<
Sure. Obviously, the music has touched a chord in all of us somewhere along
the way, so we have a common ground. If our opinions differ, so what? If we
were all like-thinking little drones, wouldn't life be dull? (And please
feel free to disagree with me on that statement <heh heh>)
BTW Michelle, I think you do a great job handling this list, "IMHO."

Subject: My Personal Journy
Hey All!
I'm new to this board and want to thank whoever put it up. For the more
J.S. stuff out there the better!
I wish to tell you a very personal reason why I am here and why I am
into John Stewart.
I am 35(my birthday was on the 14th of May) and since the age of 12
I've been listening to either The Kingston Trio(mostly Stewart era) or
John Stewart. The reason being that it is a deeply healing tool for me.
I was abused most of my life by my parents because of my Cerbral Palsy.
They could not deal with a "crippled kid" but for some strange reason
they introduced me to the world of The Kingston trio. When I learned
that John had gone Solo in '71(asking the sales guy "Is it REALLY the
same guy!?") I started a deep endevor to find anythig that he had
recorded.
I think the reason that his music has been so healing is that it is
real. It speaks to the soul of humankind. It is not some clap trapped,
rushed, make millions effort on the part of people who really don't know
how to reach the human soul. Almost every song he has written has been
about struggle, faith, hard work and healing.
These past eight years I've worked on my own personal struggle. A work
of healing inwhich every day a Stewart song is played (usually "Reason
To Rise." or "Those Who Are Wise.") All of his work has brought me
closer to living a fuller, richer life.
I want to thank you all for listening and here's hoping John has many
more years of great healing work to bring forth.
Blessed Be,
Robert

Wow....thanks, Robert....I think you summed it up better than anyone has....
What a thrill to know that John's music has touched someone as special as
you :))))
No one, especially the songwriter, knows just how meaningful their lyrics
and music are to someone, until, as you did, they share those feelings with
the public.
For all bloodliners: All the other stuff we argue, disagree and flame
about, seems a little meaningless after this, dontcha think?
And btw...I haven't responded to the "why are you here?" question yet, so
now's as good a time as any. I don't have anything real profound to offer,
just that I love John's music and it's a real neat thing to find so many
others that love him too. Someone said earlier, that "he is more than his
music". i.e. the animal experimentation issue, etc. If we all just "gushed"
over John day after day after day, and put up never ending song lists from
concerts, this list would get old real quick, and (I'm guessing here, JS)
I think John would get rather tired of it too. I have no doubt that he
appreciates and needs the accolades we give him, but I would surmise that he
also (being the person that he is) finds all of our opinions, feelings, and
disagreements quite interesting. Another guess, is that John finds learning
about his fans' interests, opinions and things they feel strongly about,
just as intersting as WE find learning about HIM!
We're not designed to be "one track" people...we're multi-faceted creatures,
and that's what makes us what we are. All the things that make us "tick",
make us the people who love and indentify with John's music in the first
place. So those things, I feel, should be open to discussion too, within
reason, of course.
MIchelle, I'm not on any other "lists"...I wouldn't have the time to read
anymore email than I already have, so I have nothing to compare to. But as
far as I'm concerned, this list is great...subject matter is GREAT, ( ALL of
it ) and I wouldn't change a thang! <G>
Oh and one more thing....I've been in the "chat" environment for over 2
years now, and through that, I have made several VERY good real time
friends, whom I see frequently. And that is just through "chatting" about
nothing in particular, and mosty just bein' silly and havin' fun jokin'
around. I just spoke to Rick Godwin the other day on the phone, and I'm
going to be meeting he and his wife next month in Scottsdale. Point is...I
anticipate that many of us here will develope close, and "REAL" friendships,
through meeting each other here. Goes back to the point that I don't feel
that keeping any postings here EXCLUSIVELY about JS or "don't post it" , is
fair to everyone who is interested in getting to know some of the others
here :))))) In a nutshell, lets' keep it just the way it is! (I'm
probably being redundant, since someone already said "if it's not broke,
don't fix it" and I heartily agree :)))))
