Subject: Santa Barbara Info?

Does anyone have any details on the June 28 show in Santa Barbara? Is
JS part of a larger line-up since it's a "benefit" show? Also curious
as to what "Jodi House" is. At this point I'm assuming the venue
Victoria Hall is on the UCSB campus.

Except for my intro, I've been quiet since I joined the list last
February as a casual fan (casual at least in comparison to most
Bloodliners). I have to admit the group's appreciation of John's music
is infectious. Four or five CD's later (from Homcoming, of course), and
I was calling McCabes to find out when tickets would go on sale. About
that time my wife brought me back to the reality that on the Saturday
night in question we'd be 30,000 feet up over the Pacific about halfway
home from our long-planned Hawaiian vacation. I lamely suggested that
the flight landed at 10 p.m., LAX is near Santa Monica and maybe we
could make the late show. She gave me one of those looks that said I
probably hadn't thought through what we'd do with our 8 & 10 year old
boys and what shape we'd be in after flying all day. Suffice to say I
didn't mention phase two of my plan that involved our babysitter meeting
us at the airport, taxicabs, and leaving the luggage at the airport
overnight. In the end I took some measure of comfort in listening to
"Airdream Believer", seated between two sleeping boys with their heads
on my shoulder, watching Hale Bopp from 6 miles high and mouthing the
words to "I remember America". Gotta take your pleasures where you can
find them. In any event, my focus now is on Santa Barbara and any info
would be appreciated. Hope to see some of you there.

My oh my ... a Harry Chapin reference. Now there was one fantastic
performer and songwriter. Could nail you between the eyes and in the heart
with his stuff ... and his live performances reminded me of the intimacy our
own JS excels at achieving. Lord, what a classic case of being done too
soon. So much like John yet so very different, too.
John's songs and performances always strike me as purer emotion, more raw
soul and in general, a greater "edge." Harry's concerts had less edge but
could still pack an emotional wallop. Interesting to think about these two,
after all these years.
Anyone else with thoughts here?

Couple of times, actually (not make you greener but they were great
memories: Kansas City and on campus at the U of Missouri in Columbia).
Here, too, was a great performer who was at one with the audience ... as one
of his band members once told me, "Hey, we're easy," when asked what set-up
they needed for the show on campus. Harry would set on the edge of the
stage and literally sing to a female fan in the first row, such as "Mail
Order Annie." Heart-stopper ...
One of his roadies said (this was about a year before Chapin was killed in
that car crash) that Chapin's next career "step" was politics, that he was
planning on making a run for Congress once he finished launching his hunger
project at the time.
Never made it. Done too soon, like I said.
Just another reminder why I'm so grateful John is still with us. Seems as
though John was always destined to keep building his body of work, to keep
us strong in spirit, to keep our wings beating.
Thanks, John.

First of all, I like seeing "wonderin' " in the subject window since I
sent the first one off. It's like seeing your son all grown up and out
on his own.
Regarding Harry Chapin and the ilk.
I think that there are a few individuals who are story songwriters.
That's to say their approach to musical tunes is to tell a story in three
and one half minutes (or seven). Besides Harry Chapin one that comes to
mind is Bill Morrissey. His song Birches is one of the simplest
descriptions of a relationship's course that I have ever heard. Check
out any of Bill's CD's if you can find them. I really liked Night Train
and You'll Never Get To Heaven".
Have been listening to Bandera Live and have really moved Miracle Mile up
on my list of John's favorites. Especially love the drum/cymbal crash
during the chorus.

Most of the Tower and Virgin Megastores in the L.A. area have just one or two
JS items--sometimes a gem like "Phoenix Concerts" or "Bloodlines/Willard
Minus 2" but generally just 1 of the 2 Shanachie releases. Haven't seen
"Rough Sketches" yet (bought it at McCabe's).

This raises the question--Do we do more for Angelbravo and the cause by
buying from Homecoming and Folk Era or by flooding the Towers and the Virgins
with orders? John, what's your preference?

Subject: one more on bootlegs...

As a Grateful Dead tape collecter for many years, the recent posts regarding
unreleased material has been very interesting. Someone asked Jerry Garcia in
an interview why the band let people record their shows. His answer was that
"we are done with it, if you want it, you can have it. True fans will still
collect our albums, and the tapes may even generate more interest in the
commercial products". The golden rule on taping for us has always been that
charging is totally uncool, not to be considered. But sharing the joy of
these magical muscial moments was to be encouraged. I don't think John has
anything to fear from a few bootlegs floating around his loyal fanbase. What
he may consider it just an old rock is a diamond to his fan. So John, I
would ask you not to feel violated if this music has made the rounds, rather,
consider yourself lucky to have fans who hold you in such high esteem. I
type this as I look at my library of 70+ live Dead 'bootleg' tapes, sitting
next to my collection of most every LP they released. There is just
something magical about the bootleg, not as a "ha, I didnt have to buy it",
but as a capturing of a magical moment in time, a little treasure. I have
copies ofthe Dead playing with Etta James, Bruce Hornsby, Tower of Power,
Neville Bros, Branford Marsallis, Huey Lewis, Howard Wales and many others.
What I woudn't give to have a copy of the show John did with Lindsay
Buckingham in San Fran, or one with Roseanne, or Just John & Buffy..... Oh
well, now I'm late for work.....

of the cover (it is quite unlike the cover of the release from Bear Family)

Regarding the post that wouldn't post:

Find the .gif of the odd Phoenix Concerts CD at:

And if anyone "in the know" would kindly tell me how these releases come
about, is it a new release (it didn't have a date), are there any more to
come from this?

I must confess, I had to buy it. It was so inexpensive and even though I
have the Bear Family release, I thought I could do some prosyletiszing
using this one without risk to my other (I can't bring myself to lend them
out for fear of never seeing them again and, of course, I don't make tapes.

I hope this one works.

Yep, the original RCA LP cover, alright ... always loved it ... liked it
better than what they put on the CD, too. Many, many thanks, Michelle, for
posting it.
Which reminds me of a question that nagged me all these years, ever since
the Phoneix album came out: Just what IS that photo, anyway, Angelbravo?
Where and when was it taken (I assume it was around the time the show was
recorded but you know what they say about assuming ... ) and more
interestingly, who ARE those two honchos flanking you? Your bassman, Arnie
Moore, looks like the fellow on the left (your right in the photo) but who's
the one on the right (your left)?
For the life of me, I don't recognize either of 'em. (Yes, it's things like
this that consume our lives, give us reason for living and prove once again
that I've got way too much time on my hands ... )

Re; The new Phoenix-
two clues for me here. Since it has the original RCA records album cover and
it shows RCA special products and BMG, I believe this is probably a release
of the RCA now BMG CD club (like the Columbia CD and tape club). I believe
BMG bought RCA some time back. When CD clubs sell these things often at
ridiculous prices (I have seen Nanci Griffith CD's for as little as $1.99) it
is because they bought a license for a certain number of reissue copies and
then they ceate their own version and sell them for whatever they want. Dave
or John can probably clarify here, but I don't think the artist receives any
normal royalties on the sale of these items other than what they get from the
actual license to the distributor to make the copies.

That is how all these CD clubs work their "Buy 2 CD's and get 10 free" bits.

I don't belong to the BMG club but I was told a while back that they were
occassionally selling the Kingston Trio "box" at ridiculously low prices too.

Anyways, it is a find for any collector I would think.

Fellow Bloodliners. . .

I just came back in the house and discovered my daughter had sat down at the
computer while I was still on line.. on Bloodlines. And in her typical
1O-year-old. school's-out, don't-care mood typed a very childish message on
both bloodlines and also the Guy Clark list. And my screen name was all
over it. . .obviously.

I only needed to read the first sentence or two on each posting to know that
something pretty sorry was typed out to the whole world.

I have no idea what the rest of the postings said, and I don't really want to
know.

What can I say except that she no more meant one word of it to either John or
Guy than the man on the far side of the moon.

She's an honors student, and straight A's, and probably too smart for many
of the situations she gets into. She certainly knows better, to say the
least.

Unfortunately, she and her friends "joke" like this, among themselves, with
their favorite singers - but not online - the likes of Garth and the
Eagles. and even about their school teachers.

The screen was open, online and the timing. . . and her adolescent judgment
 - were somewhere out in space.

All I can ask for is for forgiveness. . .for her. . and for me. Does she
know better. . .of course. Should she not have even thought in jest about it.
. that question really doesn't even need to be asked. We all know the only
answer to it.

In reality, my daughter loves John's music, and 'ranks' it right up with
her other favorites. She simply did not mean anything by it. . .but more
parent monitoring of this machine is definitely in order, starting now.

.Bloodliners and John. . .please accept my sincere, humble apologies. .
(And I'll post the same over on Guy's list.) A very embarassing moment, yes.

You have no idea how *I* feel right now. God, I can't believe this all
happened.

Onward and upward? Yes. . .as we continue to circle back.. .

as John is known to write - love you all. . and so does my daughter.

would ask you not to feel violated if this music has made the rounds, rather,
consider yourself lucky to have fans who hold you in such high esteem.

I'm not Jerry Garcia, It's my art and if demos get out that aren't supposed
to get out, it doesn't mean they're now for everybody.
The net now makes it possible to clone any tape for any number of people.

I don't care about live show tapes, I'm talking about song versions that I
never wanted out. If I don't have control then who does? Should I just send
out tapes of every whim and muse I might have and let the listeners sort out
what's crap and what's good?
I should be flattered I have fans that want to bootleg my private tapes. Sir
you flatter yourself.

John,
I have to agree with you, I paint and draw and I certainly dont
want everything I've done to be 'out there'. Sometimes I'm experimenting
or just noodling around - sometimes the experiments dont work and I
don't want to share them with others until I can get them into shape.
(I've ditched a few canvases, painted over others and shredded some
sketches over the years). I'm not a professional artist but I can feel for
a pro who doesn't want EVERYTHING in the public eye. We should
respect your feelings on this - it's your work, your art

Dear Christine-
I imagine by now you've gotten enough email about your message (and
perhaps one or two words from your father) that you're seriously
considering giving up computers as a hazard to your health.
On the other hand, despite all the embarassment and hassle triggered,
you might want to take a look at a couple of things. One of the biggest,
as no doubt your father has explained, is we learn by making mistakes
(if we always got everything right, what would there ever be to learn?).
And since making mistakes is a part of being human (remember getting
your "Human ID Card" shortly before being born? In the small print,
right below where you're supposed to sign, it says, "Allowed to make
mistakes if learning follows"), then you picked a good place to do it.
These folks around here are pretty good, for the most part, about
strange communications from each other. Heck, they even tolerate me and
my meanderings. So if they can put up with this old outlaw, I think you
can be safe in knowing they have room for you.
So, if it's OK with your Dad, come on back and tell us what you think
of Mr. Stewart's music. I'd like to hear what you think, and maybe so
would Angel Bravo.
Take care,
Steve

I think there's one thing that we-who-are-not-in-the-music-biz sometimes
fail to realize and that is, even though it sounds so natural and free
flowing, there is a hell of a lot of thought and planning that goes into
each cut on a CD. Even after the song is recorded, there is production
that goes on afterwards and we might be surprised at the care and detail
that is considered for each track.

You could think of it as a prima dancer who is experimenting with different
moves and coreography (that happens to be videotaped for her use later) and
having that distributed. Or, for you sports fans, how about the game films
that they use to dissect afterwards. They aren't produced with the audience
in mind, simply for the discernment of the artist.

I think that in this world of paparazzi "journalism", we tend to feel
entitled to anything and everything that is associated with a particular
performer or artist. Let's remember that we are above that. We are so
priviledged to have AngelBravo's participation on this list. We have the
benefit of learning much about him, that which many artists would never
permit and I, for one, will show my appreciation by listening to his point
of view and respecting his wishes, even if it means I don't get to hear
"Black Sky" until it's ready for release.
