I just saw John's comments regarding bootlegs. I think that, out of respect
for John, we all ought to pledge not to pass around unauthorized material.

I don't know what the situation is in the states, but here in the UK there is
growing pressure on record shops to stock only mainstream stuff - Competition
from supermarkets in the top 40 area means that there is very strong price
competition, & even the big chains of record shops are having to cut prices on
this, which means the profits from the top 40 don't subsidise the more obscure
stuff, and they are reluctant to get it except on special order. This means
that record companies will have shorter, more expensive production runs which make
the CDs harder to find. (I understand that a recent Sandy Denny BBC Live in Concert
CD sold out on advance orders without even making it into stock anywhere, for example)

So, the stuff never makes it into stock. How many potential purchasers of JS' stuff
are put off realising it by the absence of stock to be browsed ? If they see a review,
or are vaguely interested by having people like us going on at them about JS (or some
other favourite) but are not committed / knowledgeable enough to seek out product, they
*Might* just notice CDs while browsing, buy & become nuts (sorry, musicologists :) ).

Here in Manchsester there are now only 2 independent record stores in the city centre,
both specialists - For John Stewart stuff, Decoy in Deansgate have some stock & can
order anything on UK or US release (although they are having problems geting me Rough
Sketches (Pre-honeymoon dementia at Folk Era perhaps ? :) )

Any UK Bloodliners could also try out their mail order service (just 'phone them - the
number's 0161 832 0183)

But - Mail order by musicologists / Nuts won't get the stuff in the browsers.
Beginning / end of vicisous circle.

Anyone out there in the music industry like to make suggestions like those for the
"Do Spitbucket's Legwork" campaign for live venues ?

And does John Want to be "product" again anyway ?

In response to the post asking whether or not John's material is available in
the States, I would say that most of the smaller shops don't have much
available. Even the national chains don't usually have more than one or two
CD's on hand. However, Tower Records in NYC is a notable exception. I was
in their Lincoln Center store recently and they had no less than 40 of John's
CD's on display! As far as I could tell, they were selling everything on the
Homecoming list. There were easily 10 copies of Rough Sketches. I was very
surprised!

While I'm not a true Parrothead, I have quite a few Jimmy Buffet albums and
have seen him perform a number of times. However, John Stewart and Jimmy
Buffet have always been related in my mind. I think it stems from the fact
that I saw both of them for the first time at the same venue only a few
months apart. After those two shows so close together, they have always been
linked for me. I think it was 1976 and I know it was downtown San Jose and
the club was eventually named Farmer's Union, but I think it had a different
name them. Some friends of mine were major Buffet fans (I had never heard of
him) and they invited me to go with them to see him. It was wonderful and I
had a great time. Just a short time later, those same friends invited me to
the same club to go see John Stewart. I jumped at that, because I already
had Calif Bloodlines and Willard, but I had been out of touch for a few years
and had never seen John live. Needless to say, I was blown away! Not only
was the man a great songwriter (which I already knew), but he was also a
great performer and real swift with retorts to the hecklers. I was hooked
on the live performance and the man as an entertainer. What followed was
many many years of traipsing up and down California to see John perform. He
opened for Jimmy Buffet in Sonoma sometime after my first encounter with both
of them in San Jose, and that was like a reunion for me!

Well, enough of this drivel, my point was I've been following them both for
the same amount of time and have enjoyed music from the both of them over all
these years.

Nancy -- I feel the same way about Buffet that you do. Also I enjoy Harry
Chapin's music. But of course JS is the best of all. Bob

Hi,

I will not pass around bootleg copies of John's or anyone else's music. It is
unethical and should not be tolerated.
