Pat Boone's cover of July, other covers, Hot Dog-The Movie,

Subj: Pat Boone's `July'
Date: 96-12-19
From: don-fish@msn.com (D. & F. R.)
I've gotten my hands on a CD copy of ``Pat Boone -- More Greatest Hits.'' It
concludes with ``July, You're a Woman,'' which is credited to ``John C.
Stewart.'' The label further states that the single was released in March of
1969 and reached No. 100 on the pop charts.
I assume most Bloodliners have heard JS's telling of Pat Boone calling him on
the phone and especially about Pat asking to alter the lyric ``pull on over
to the side of the road and show you what I mean'' to ``pull on over to the side
of the road and prove I'm not so mean.''
Here's how Pat Boone's liner notes tell it:
------QUOTING--------
John Stewart, a former member of the Kingston Trio, wrote ``July, You're a
Woman.'' (Producer Jerry) Yester had been in The Modern Folk Quartet, a
Trio-inspired group. ``I knew John from back in the folk days,'' Yester
continues, ``and he was a good friend of Chip Douglas, who was with me in
the MFQ. Chip had recently produced a No. 1 record for The Monkees of John's
`Daydream Believer.'''
The band on the Tetragrammaton album included guitarist James Burton and
bassist Jerry Scheff from Elvis Presley's band, drummer Toxey French, and
pianist Larry Knechtel.
``I thought I made a very good record,'' says Pat. ``Although I had to make a
slight change in John's lyric.'' Fans of the Stewart record should listen to
what happens when he pulls over to the side of the road: Boone altered
Stewart's original line in keeping with his own image. Stewart today jokes
about Pat Boone covering his song, but notes that he did grant permission for
the three-word lyric revision and (to the best of our knowledge) hasn't
returned his royalties.
--------END OF QUOTES------------
As for the song itself, I gotta say Boone's version is better than I had
expected. There's a nice little banjo dancing around in there, which feels
nice.
But then it gets around to the ``prove I'm not so mean'' lyric, and the only
possible reaction is laughter. Plus, there seems to be another lyric change.
Where John sings ``And I have been around with a gypsy girl named Shannon,
daughter of the devil ... '' Pat sings ``Why, I once ran around with a gypsy
girl named Shannon, daughter of the ...'' and then I swear I can't make out
what he says, but I really don't think it's devil. And even if it is, he
notably alters his delivery and articulation for that line, as if fearing a
lightning bolt for simply speaking the word.
But not surprisingly, the biggest difference isn't adding a banjo or changing
a lyric. The big difference is how the song feels. Whereas John's version is
a very hot summer night, Pat's is just a very hummable pop song. Whereas it's
easy to imagine the affair in John's version burning bright but briefly, in
Pat's version I'm just convinced that at the end of the evening July said,
``Pat, you're not so mean. Let's be friends.''

Reading this account of Pat Boone's version of July has reminded me of
several other obscure covers of John's songs. Here are a few
"New Land" and "Come Along Julie" (two of John's Cumberland Three
compositions) covered by Jimmie Rodgers on his "At Home with Jimmie Rodgers -
An Evening of Folk Songs" LP
"Never Goin' Back" as covered by a group called Kentucky Express
"Headin' for the Hills" by the Limelighters on "Tonight in Person"
"Lonesome Picker" by Glenn Yarbrough on "Jubilee"
"Where are you Going with the Rain" by Glenn Yarbrough on "Live at the Hungry
i"
"Friend of Jesus" also by Glenn Yarbrough on "GY and the Havenstock River
Band"
"July You're a Woman" by Red White and Blue Grass
Anyone else have any others to add?

of it, too. It's on "The New Kingston Trio: The Lost Masters: 1969-1972"

I once saw a movie on tv about skiing that contained one of John's songs.
The movie is called "Hot Dog". In one romantic scene the actor whips out
a guitar and sings to his lady friend. If I remember correctly the song was
"Bringing Down The Rain"
Here's another one. Does anyone remember "Smokey & The Bandit III ? John
sings over the final scene and through the credits. I forget which song it
was. I may have to rent it to refresh my memory.
Here's one more. I remember hearing "Never Going Back" one time on THE
MUNSTERS.
Can anyone else think of any more?

Yup. I remember this one. The song is "Ticket To The Wind," and I
believe has only ever been issued on the Smokey & The Bandit Part 3
soundtrack. Nice song, nice recording, circa Dream Babies Go
Hollywood or Blondes I believe. The thing that I'll always remember
about the song is the drum synth John uses for a the
chunka-chunka-chunka-chuck-a-chunk-a
rhythm throughout the song. (like that makes any sense written out).
I also seem to remember that around the same era one of John's songs
was used in some kind of movie that had something to do with
speedboats in swamps or some such thing. I kinda think that the
movie was even more forgettable than "Hot Dog" if that's at all
possible.
Sincerely,
Ian

I am interested in all Stewart movie and TV sightings/hearings as I would
eventually like to include this info on my web page and/or as part of the
Bloodlines FAQ.
As far as Hot Dog- The Movie, that B-movie about skiing and hot tubs, came
out around 83 or so I think- it played a bunch on Showtime or whatever cable
channel I had back then. The song was none other than "Dreamers On The Rise".
I actually have a video extract of that song from the movie. Had a brand
spanking new first VCR and that was one of the first recordings. The song is
a dubbed performance of Chuck McDermott doing John's song. Chuck was still
playing with John's band at the time, I believe.
I know there is a Smokey & The Bandit 3 lp or more likely ep out. I never
bought it but I did see it long ago.
I would also like to wish all the Bloodliners and their families a very Merry
Christmas. It has been a real pleasure to meet a couple of you this year and
to chat & email with the rest. You are a great bunch of folks. One of these
days we'll have to have a real House Concert at some hallowed ground. You
know, like back in Pomona at the county fair, or maybe Bolinas, up the hill
round Placerville, somewhere down the line.... Take care all, Ron

We have that movie on tape......It is forgettable as I can't remember the
title, but it is about a girl who wrote a (John Stewart) song....and a famous
country singer comes to the swamp for a big coon hunt....and loves the song.
I'll go look for it................300 tapes and 5 minutes later, its called
"Soggy Bottom, USA." starring... Ben Johnson, Dub Taylor, Ann Wedgeworth,
Lois Nettleton. The song is in the beginning credits......"One of these
Dreams" Lyrics by John Stewart, music by Larry Cansler. The only substance
to this movie is built around the song... My kids were watching it a few
years ago (we bought an old VCR with a bunch of movies) and I thought the
song sounded like JS, so I checked the credits. ---Jon A.

I accidently caught "Hot Dog" one night right in the middle of "Dreamers." I

Roseanne Cash has done "Runaway Train" and a really interesting song, "Dance

If my memory serves correctly, the song was Dreamers on the Rise. The lead
character's name was Harkin. Another bit of trivia: A footnote on the
"Sunstorm" album says the song, "Drive Again" is from the original score of
the motion picture "Harkin." Was Harkin ever made? Or did it denigrate into
the mindless Hot Dog?
Another question: Who is Oliver Makin, who is quoted in the liner notes of
the Sunstorm and Wingless Angels albums?

Subj: A Christmas Story
Date: 96-12-22
From: Bluesy33@aol.com
A christmas never passes that I don't count my blessings. I always remember
my fathers story of a depression Christmas in rural Kansas in the early
1930s. His father, who was slowly dying of heart disease, could not work,
and there was no money for food, much less christmas presents. In
desparation he sold his hunting rifles (he no longer had the stamina to hunt
for small game for food) to provide food for his wife and three children. My
father, the oldest at seven years, said his father showed no emotion but
sensed that it cut him deep to have to resort to such measures for his
family. After buying food at the general store, his mother gave each child
25 cents to choose a christmas present. My father chose a small Model A toy
car.
I don't know if its age or deepening sentiment, but he never tells us this
story anymore. But a christmas never goes by that I don't remember it.

Well, John and all, seeing as I initiated this, if there really is interest
in having a Bloodlines House Concert, I'm willing to stick my foot in my
mouth and offer to do it sometime in the Spring, like mid-April. This sounds
like a perfect project for the New Year. I live in Vallejo Calif which is
good for John as he's not far away. Other Bay Area folks shouldn't have
trouble with Vallejo. I have a big yard as far as suburbia goes with a nice
view over the Carquinez strait. I can just picture John and us all out there.
But, like trying to do Route 66 I know everyone has a life and scheduling
this stuff with your life is not always easy. So, folks let me know if you
want to run with this. John, let me know what your requirements would be. The
usual way House Concerts go, so as to avoid any commercial problems is that a
"donation" is requested. I need to know how many folks would come and how
much of a donation from each of us is needed.

Went on a major Stewart binge this weekend. Hey, I even listened to Wingless
Angels... The high point was sitting in the hot tub Saturday night with my
lovely wife, gazing at the bright bright moon and listening to the "Savana"
(sp?) tape, great mooney music, then coming inside and listening to the first
three cuts of "Punch the Big Guy" as we gazed at the Christmas tree (we were
tired of Johnny Mathis's Xmas album, so we substituted Johnny Stewart).
I will be at the house concert. I'm ready to mail my donation as soon as you
say the word, Clack.
Hey, a Web site from John himself sounds like a terrific idea. I'd love to be
able to view some of the paintings, and maybe hear a sound clip or two from a
song in progress, if things get technically advanced.
I need John's P.O. Box in Novato, and the zip code. Could someone e-mail that
to me privately, please?
Merry Christmas to everyone on this group, and the AOL one, too. Several
Stewart experiences stand out for me as among the very best things about
1996, inlcuding seeing John play in the Bay Area in January, and then again
at McCabe's in July -- and also being a part of Bloodlines. Those kinds of
connections -- to the people and to the music -- are for me precisely the
spirit of Christmas.

wherever music videos are rented. It's such a great song of a marriage in
trouble. -Jon

I'd love to come to a concert in Vallejo since I was born there (California
bloodlines) back in '49, Mom worked at Mare Island and my dad a marine
engineer at CMA. Lots of my relatives still live there. Weird how one Ron
on this board is from my hometown and the other lives down the road in
Rainelle WV!
Reality is, teaching school in West Virginia, I'm not likely to get there in
the spring, looking at taking students to the Rep. Dominicana for spring
break. But I can ask my cousin Gary Zalesky to set in for me!
"Well you can't look back, while you're movin' on, " Happy Hollidays!
P.S. Another "Gold" sighting......WJLS radio in Beckley WV played it
tonight.....

Yo! Del, I am bummed, too, your friendly list manager and webmistress
Michelle. However, I imagine that we could work up something to work into
some downtime that the group might have the next time they visit the east
coast. Keep your chin up!

Right you are, my fellow West Virginian. It was featured on CMT the
other night. Can't figure out why I hadn't seen it before. But,
nevertheless, a great video.
Merry Christmas,
Ron in Rainelle
