Subj:	Introduction
Date:	96-12-09
From:	RMoore1004@aol.com

Well, I finally made it, with help from our lovely webmistress!
To introduce myself: My name is Bob Moore, and I live in Fort Worth,TX. As
it turns out, today is my birthday, the big 5-0!
On my 12th birthday, I got my first guitar (my parents couldn't stand the
idea of getting me the drums I wanted), and for Christmas that year I got the
first Kingston Trio album. We've been together ever since. I collected and
(musically) devoured each album as soon as it came out. I got a banjo a
couple of years later. My musical world has centered around music like that
introduced by the Trio. I was devastated when I heard Dave Guard was leaving
the group, but relieved when I saw Close-Up in a record store, introducing
his replacement, John Stewart! John has said that he always wanted to be
Elvis and that Ricky Nelson got to be Elvis instead. I always wanted to be
Dave Guard, but John got to be him instead!
Anyway, I still listen to the Trio, try to keep up with everything John
releases (I'm a little behind), and occasionally try my meager hand at
songwriting.
I have been in bands off and on since graduation from college, but for the
last 5 years have been teaching; 4 years teaching 6th grade social studies,
and this, my first year teaching high school history and speech. I bring my
guitar to class on occasion and bombard my students with Stewart songs (they
like "Daydream Believer" and "Dreamners on the Rise"). I even have the John
Stewart timeline poster on the wall by my desk in the teacher workroom!
I am somewhat of a Stewart fanatic, measuring everyone I hear to his music.
Not fair, I know, but most other songwriters are kind of heavy-handed in
their lyrics by comparison.
As one or two others have mentioned, my wife is not a big fan of John's, and
I don't know anyone who is familiar with John.
I go to Poor David's Pub in Dallas whenever he appears. I hope it's soon.
I'm glad to be on the list, and I look forward to reading everyone's
postings.

And finally I write:

Thanks Ed - and any others familiar with us. The whole story from
the horses mouth is as follows :

The Rediscover Catalogue - reachable at that address & at
800-232-7328 is our mail order catalogue - features Folk Era titles,
as well as the most comprehensive selection of Kingston Trio, PPM,
JST & other (lowercase) folk era greats assembled in one place for
your purchasing pleasure :>).

Rediscover specifically is on the web at
http://www.rediscovermusic.com though so under construction as to
have little to it.

http://www.folkera.com is the Folk Era Records label site. We don't
have web pages up for all of our artists yet, but as of this weekend,
have included the two Stewart albums available on Folk Era.
Soundclips should be up by later this week. We're really happy about
how this one is coming together, and thank our good friends at NOMA
(the national on-line music alliance -http://songs.com) for their help
in making it so!)

Rediscover was started by Allan Shaw as the Kingston Korner Katalogue
some 15 years ago (give or take some), primarily as a source for Kingston
Trio recordings. The scope grew until in 1989 the name was changed to
The Rediscover Music Catalogue. About 1985 Allan started Folk Era
Records to issue some "lost" Kingston Trio recordings & used the
Rediscover Catalogue to distribute them. Also - Allan published,
originally with the help of Ben Blake and Jack Rubeck (co-authors of
the Kingston Trio On Record) a quarterly newsletter called the
Kingston Korner Newsletter - it's scope grew somewhat beyond the
Trio, and went through a variety of name changes - from the
Newsletter to Folk Era Today to Popular Folk Music Today to The
Discover Music Magalogue before finally being laid to rest as Allan
decided what worked best & allowed him some hope of recovering his
investment was the label and the Catalogue.

Somewhere amongst all that he found time to raise me, and now
employs me to tell you more than you probably really wanted to know
about all the above. Thanks for reading this far!

Sincerely,

Ian

Subj:	The day the music died
Date:	96-12-10
From:	ClackClack@aol.com

In the summer of 1986 in the small northern California town of Cotati before
a gathering of family, friends and fans, John Stewart sang these words to
Kate Wolf and those gathered with her:

"Some Kind of Love starts as friends
that kind of love never ends
for it comes on as slow
as a flower in snow
Some Kind of Love starts as friends"

Kate Wolf had many friends and the love she shared through her songs is
something I had never experienced before or since. Kate Wolf died from
leukemia on December 10, 1986- ten years ago. I need no other evidence that
life isn't fair than for this wonderful person to have left this earth far too
soon. We are all the poorer for it, but we still have the rich music she has
left us. If you've never listened to a Kate Wolf album give one a try
sometime. My favorite is probably Close to You, but there is a excellent
retrospective that Kate compiled before her death called "Gold In
California".

"Time moves like a river. You can even sink or swim. And a wise man learns to
forgive her for all she's done to him." words also by John. I'm not that wise
yet- I haven't learned to forgive her.

I miss you Kate... Ron

Subj:	Escape to Arizona
Date:	96-12-10
From:	cockatoo@bslnet.com (Nancy Talbott)

Christmas and John Stewart have become quite a tradition for me in the last
five years or so. Every December, John has played at Anderson's 5th Estate,
in Scottsdale, AZ, and I've always had a front row seat. Once, before I
moved here to Prescott, AZ., I actually drove all the way (about a 6 hour
drive) from San Diego area by myself, JUST to see John. He is always
superb, and last night was no exception.

John Hoke opened for JS, and this was the second time I had seem him. He
was very good the first time, but this time he seemed much more "at ease"
and more "polished" than the first time. I enjoyed his music very much.

At long last, JS appeared, alone....which seemed a bit different than
previous occassions. He comment that, indeed, he was doing this a little
different, and said something about ambience and "being in his living room"
singing for us. (only in my dreams!)

After a few songs, (song list is following), he brought out Buffy. This
angelic voice sang "Bringing Down the Moon" as no one else could. Buffy's
voice is so pure and clear, she could melt the heart of an angel.

Then the whole kit and kaboodle came out and the music really got goin then!
Dave "Dave" Batti of course, and Dennis "the D Man" on drums, along with
John Hoke....what a group! Not to mention JS....goes without saying that he
was excellent as usual.

Song list

Somewhere Down the Line (solo, guitar/John...very nice touch)
Omaha Rainbow (JS solo)
Kansas Rain (JS solo)

Bringing Down the Moon (Buffy/solo)

Ticket to the Stars (all)
Strange Rivers
Children of the New Frontier
Irresistable Targets
(I was starting to think he was gonna play tbe ENTIRE "Punch"
albumn", which wouldn't have broken my heart one bit!
Midnight Wind (heard that TODAY in Staples Office Supply store in Prescott!)

Lily and Joe (Buffy/solo....superb)

Runaway Train (all)
Fire in the Wind
..."Drivin' thru cornfields" (new song....WONDERFUL...apologies, John, you
didn't announce the title of that one so I didn't know what to call it here)
Runaway Fool of Love

California Bloodlines.......>
Freeway Pleasure.............> Medley......GREAT!!!!
Because of a Dancer........>

<Intermission>

Wild Side of Me (all)
Summer Child
July
Neon Road (? title)....>
Wheels of Thunder....> Medley
Dreamers on the Rise
(One from Fire in the Wind, which I'm not so familiar with, didn't catch the
title)
"Missouri Bird"??? (apologies, again, if the title isn't correct)
Daydream Believer
Never Goin' Back...>
Stuck in Lodi ..........> Medley
(He actually had LOTS of "people who played on this" to thank this
time, instead of the often-heard "I'd like to thank....DAVE" <G> )

Encore:
One of the nicest he's ever done...all Christmas/holiday songs......
Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy.....
        What Child Is This? (Buffy....WOW!!!)
I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day.....absolutely superb
and another new one.....
"The Best is Yet To Come".......(WHAT a concept!)
.........and then he was gone agan...till next year.

As "they" say (always wondered who "they" is...<giggle)......
"Been there, Done it...bought the CD....and the video, and some more
CD's!

All in all, the concert was fantastic, superb, .....he always leaves me
kinda speechless, no matter how often I see him.
Again, apologies to all, and especially to you, John, for not getting all
titles correctly....mebbe you could help me out here? :))))

Thanks to you John, for a wonderful evening :)))))

Happy Holidays
Nancy

Wow! What a show that must have been. A full two sets, John and Buffy singing
song after song, plus Christmas carols. Next year I'm gonna have to make the
trip to Arizona, obviously. My wife and I had actually planned to drive over
from the San Diego area to see the Scottsdale show, but decided to go
snowboarding in Utah instead. Just got too many passions, I guess. Thanks for
the great details, Nancy. Nice to get the feeling of the show. Great report.

Count me as jealous too, sliding around the snow here in the midwest,
catching colds, flus, but unable to catch the Arizona show.

The lineup sounds great. The "driving through the cornfields" lyric is
John's new song, "Cowboy in the Distance," one of his best-ever, as
`wonderful' as you describe it. Those of you in attendance apparently caught
the first public performance of it.

Hi,
I've just joined the list and thought I'd introduce myself to you all.

My name is Tony Davies, I live in England and have been listening to JS
for around 20 years. The first album I heard was California Bloodlines
and I must have played that tape 1000's of times both at home and driving
'round London in my VB Beetle. The sound of CB always reminds me of
 summer '76 in east London.

I one of those anoying people who beleive that the music I like is so
special that everyone should like it. Consiquently, I played CB to all my
mates and vitually forced them to enjoy it. Luckily most of them did
enjoy it and are now also JS fans.

Since that time I collected most of JS records/CD's and seen him in
concert a dozen or so times. I don't like all of his songs but love most
of them.

I don't know if it's true, but it seems to me that JS is more popular
here in the UK than in his native USA. Each time I go to the US, I visit
the biggest record store I can find and buy, buy buy (CD's are very
expensive in the UK), but every time I've asked an assistant if JS has
any new material, I'm always greeted by the same response 'who's he?'
Conversely, here in England I've mets loads of people who know of JS
(esp. CB)

A couple of years ago I had my car stolen and with it went my Secret
Tapes cassette. I notice that Homecoming Records are still selling it,
does anyone know if they ship to the UK?

I wish JS would an 'Unplugged' album, just himself and guitar live. I've
heard some great performances of songs (china sky, irresistable targets,
hunters of the sun, sweet dreams will come, seven times the wind) and have
sometimes been a bit dissapointed with the studio version.

I'm looking forward to hearing from other fans,
bye

"Deep in the Neon: Live at McCabe's" comes pretty close. It's just John and
"Dave," and it's excellent. Homecoming should have it. Also check out "The
Essential John and Buffy," with just the two of them and John playing
12-string (recorded in Scotland).

I share your impression tht John is more popular in the UK. He's a prophet
with insufficient honor is in own land, I think. Funny how terrific American
musicians -- several jazz artists come to mind, also -- go largely
unappreciated in the US but are seen in Europe for the geniuses they are.

I just added "The Best of John Stewart- Turning Music into Gold" import
to my JS CD collection last night. I have both albums on vinyl and the
Bombs Away album on CD but I wanted the Hollywood album on CD too. The
real surprise though was the last track, a very nice accoustic version
of "Children of the Morning." I've been trying to guess the period it
was recorded.Does any one have an idea? Also the liner notes have an
enjoyable accounting of Johns years with RSO. Now if we could just
have "Fire in the Wind" on CD!

My guess would actually be that it is a fairly recent recording. John does
it on a 12 string guitar which he has been playing regularly for the two
years or so. Also, I heard him tell a story about trying to record Children
of the Morning at the Bombs Away Dream Babies sessions with Lindsay
Buckingham and Dave Guard. There was apparently some problem with Lindsay
enunciating the lyrics clearly and it was never finished.
I'd actually like to hear from John what the true story is on this recording.
I also really like it and spent an hour or two last summer getting it to
sound decent on my guitar. I'd love to hear him do it live but have never
persuaded John to sing it.

Subj:	The Palms show
Date:	96-12-16
From:	ClackClack@aol.com

The Palms, Davis, California Dec 14, 1996

John Stewart never fails to deliver and the show at the Palms was no
exception. Taking the stage with John was Dave Batti and Buffy Ford and
newest bandmate Shirley. For those who haven't met Shirley she is a platinum
blonde with lovely eyes who was surprisingly at ease on the stage. More on
this later. The Palms was packed, SRO. It is a small club though and I
suspect a few may have been turned away. I was also pleased to see a number
of kids at the show enjoying themselves. I caught my son Brian humming along
on more than one occassion. He was hardly alone. We were also graced with the
presence of "Mother Outlaw", a regular at the Palms it seems, and she seemed
to enjoy herself chatting with the fans of her lovely daughter.

Well, on to the show. I kept a setlist- its at the end. John opened with a
moving performance of Johnny Flamingo and followed with Shadows of the Angels
Wings. Buffy, despite the presence of a slight allergy or cold, added lovely
vocals and despite my fondness for Nanci Griffith's vocals on the album, I
found this version with Buffy near perfect.

John then began a nice intro to Mac Brasel's Farm and followed with a good
performance. Pleased me immensely as this is one of my favorites from Rough
Sketches and pleased the audience too. Next up was Keeper of the Flame, a gem
from Bandera. John then introduced "I Ride The River" from his upcoming folk
opera and then Miranda Fontana, as played by Buffy, sang. To quote an old
Mountain song, this had the feel to me of a "Theme From An Imaginary
Western".

We were then treated to performances of The River, Somewhere Down The Line and
Santy Anno. Then, with opening guitar licks that caused an audible whoosh of
appreciation from the audience, John launched into Irresistible Targets and
he beat his arms against the sky to keep it flying. The heartiest applause so
far of the night greeted John at the conclusion. Dave added lively bass to
this and in fact throughout the night was his usual excellent self. (as we
have come to expect of course!) Then, a quiet call for Chilly Winds from the
audience and we received the most apropos song of the night because a howler
of a chilly wind was blowing outside. John then moved into one of my favorite
performances of the night, Missouri Birds. This was the first of a remarkable
5 songs from the Bloodlines album. Following an earlier call for Kansas we
were then rewarded with it which John segued into Kansas Rain.

And then it was time for Shirley to shine. Did you forget about Shirley? The
audience sure hadn't as she was catching the eye of each thief passing by. I
might have expected "The Lady & the Outlaw", but as Shirley covered John
with kisses John sang "Turn Around" to her. It was too cute. I will say no
more- you had to be there. I only wish I had whipped out that camera.....

John then finished up the first set with a medley of California Bloodlines/
Freeway Pleasure / Because of a Dancer. Freeway Pleasure is one of those
songs I consider an underappreciated gem. When John sings: "Every Time I hear
her say, "John why are you leaving?"" it never fails to tug at my heart.
A killer.

After a short intermission came Razorback Woman and Children of the New
Frontier. John then spoke with two young girls in the front row asking if
they were there because they had to be or because they wanted to be? There
was a definate want to be reply and John asked if they had a request. I think
they momentarily surprised the big guy with a request for Miracle Mile which
John and company then delivered in very good fashion.

We then heard July You're a Woman and a song I was unfamiliar with, (I'm
guessing it was called) Spirit of the Road. Then a surprise. Quite different
then the version I heard last February at its debut, John & Buffy gave us
another part of the folk opera with a reworking of Interview With An Angel. I
thought the audience responded very well to this. But then it was time to
pull out the stops and John and Dave launched an absolutely roaring Neon
Road. I think this song got the best response of the night from the audience
and I heard many comments like "great new song". It WAS great.

Then it was time for some of that Stewart magic. In a seamless meld of Ghost
of the Superchief & Pirates of Stone Canyon Road the audience was in the palm
of the hand of a master. Then, much too quickly it suddenly seemed, we had
Dreamers on the Rise and Mother Country to close the show.

With a night like this there was the inevitable demand for an encore.
Following the song that pays the rent we received the special treat of three
Christmas songs. What Child Is This? from Buffy (best I've heard since Robert
Goulet laughs the clack), I Heard The Bells on Christmas Day, and then Silent
Night led by Buffy and joined by us all.

A full night of wonderful songs and what a way to end the year.

The setlist:

Johnny Flamingo On The Blue Dream Road
Shadows of the Angels Wings
Mac Brasel's Farm
Keeper of the Flame
I Ride The River (Buffy)
The River
Somewhere Down the Line
Santy Anno

Homecoming do ship to the UK. I've had a couple of orders this

Also, Live at The Turf is available in the UK from Folk Era.

Hello!

Hope this hits the "Bloodlines" mailer. RE: a newbie! on this group!

If not, well who cares! My words are lost.

Been buying Kingston Trio records then John Stewart since LP's were $1.99
or so. Guess that dates me to a fiftyish age. Some say I am a fairly good
historian of America; some say I am crazy. Stewart's sense of America as
She has changed has kept me faithful over the years. His compassion for
all peoples and all groups, his light has helped me over the years: Vietnam
(a real bad trip) and the era of the 80's (that was perhaps worse);
I see hear that his words speak to many. That is how it should be.

I'll be around and disclose somemore about me.

Guess my "handle" here should be "The Oldest Living Son"

All The best!

Thanks for the excellent review of the show. I, too feel like I was there.
I'm glad Shirley is still with the band. I had heard her join in at
Sweetwater a few months ago, but I haven't seen (or heard) her since.

Okay, I'll bite. Who's Shirley? Somebody quite young, apparently, but
what's the connection with John? And why hasn't anyone talked about her
before?

He's a dead punk rocker who would mutilate and eat his flesh on stage. I
believe he eventually killed committed suicide (a public service). I
believe it's spelled Allin. Bet you wish you didn't ask.

FYI, there are a couple of home pages for Allin:
http://www.leary.com:8081/howard/GgAllinPage.html (just a paragraph bio and
album cover)
http://home1.swipnet.se/~w-15321/ggallin.htm (lyrics)

A painfully disturbed individual at the very least. Culturally significant
in an alarming sort of way, at worst.
