Subj: Sgt. Pepper movie
Date: 96-12-01
From: don-fish@msn.com (D. & F. R.)
I noticed that the movie version of ``Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club's
Band'' is on the Encore cable movie channel this month. Which raises my hazy
recollection that this movie ends (none too soon) with a huge chorus of rock
stars of the time, and I'm quite sure one of them is John Stewart. Which
raises two direct questions and one indirect one:
1.) Am I right about this?
2.) If so, is JS in any other scenes in this movie?
3.) What's the story behind the song ``Durango''?
Thanks in advance, Don/Peeveyroo

Seems to me that in the book, "The Kingston Trio On Record," there is
something about John almost being invited to be in a movie, or something like
that. . .

Marty,
I'm sorry about the tone of my last post--impatience got the best of me. I
agree with you about coffins, nails, and Dreamers on the Rise. I only meant
to point out that the American Dream has always also been somebody's
nightmare. I think the more we believe in the dream, the more we are
obliged to remember that.

John lost out to Kris Kristofferson ("Rita's Man") for the role of Billy the

I believe a "cane break road" is a dirt road through a sugar cane field. I
will have to listen again to see if it is "rolled" or "rode"--one is
functional, the other--it seems to me--has erotic implications.

From: ray.butler@dial.pipex.com (Ray Butler)
Introduction
Just a few words of introduction, and thanks to Michelle both for running
the list and *especially* for the beautiful personal touch of the "digest
of intros for new subscribers.
I first go interested in John's work when I read a piece in "Zig Zag"
magazine (long defunct, but a wonderful read in 1969 - 73) under the
title "The ten best LPs ever Made" raving about "California Bloodlines".
As I recall (and it was a *long* time ago)the message was that
"Bloodlines" should be isued free to the entire population as a
contribution to everyone's good mental health.
I was intrigued (you *have* to trust a magazine named after a Captain
Beefheart song), happened across the album and chanced buying it unheard
soon after, and never looked back - Never heard anything or anyone before
or since sing with so much love and so little pretension.
Soon after, saw JS at the Zig-Zag fifth birthday concert at the London
Roundhouse - sublime performance, house packed way over the fire limit,
JS was second on the bill to Michael Nesmith.
Carried on buying records, lost touch a bit except through odd copies of
"Omaha Rainbow", then heard "Gold" and nearly fell through the floor when
I realised who it was by !
Missed all UK performances since (including one 2 miles from where I Live
- Found out about it two days after it had happened !).
Now the net, the web sites & the newsgroup mean I may even get enough
notice to catch the next British Visit !
Fill that gap
re "Fire in the Wind", I too think it's "Cane Break Road", which I always
assumed is a dirt road cut through sugar cane etc fields to prevent the
spread of fire (like firebreaks in planted forests)& give access for
harvesting, and all sorts of other activities - Nice irony, given the
subject matter !

Different days, different moods, different songs.
But for many many days now it has been Because of a Dancer. This song of love
is exquisite.
Because of a Dancer, the moon's on my shoulder
Because of a Dancer, I'm waltzing through time
And part of the answer, is I'm getting no older
Because of a Dancer, I am holding the line
Because of a Dancer, I'm playing with angels
Because of a Dancer, they have turned on the light
Because of a Dancer, oh I know where the rain goes
Because of a Dancer, I am feeling alright
And if it all comes down, to the whim of an angel
And if it all comes down, to the toss of a coin
And as we all go around, we all get entangled
Because of a Dancer, the circle is joined
Because of a Dancer, I'm laughing at shadows
Because of a Dancer, and all the good times
Because of a Dancer, there is no bastinado
Because of a Dancer, I am walting through time
And if it all comes down, to the whim of an angel
And if it all comes down, to the toss of a coin
And as we all go around, we all get entangled
Because of a Dancer, the circle is joined
because of a dancer, because of a dancer

John, look for us in our "usual" seats there...front and center at the first

(whom you've met some time ago) all the way from CALIF just for the
concert!!!
This is the BEST Christmas gift I get, and have gotten for the last 4-5

Merry Christmas, Happy Channuka (sp? sorry....), and Feliz Navidad to ALL!

PJ--
Whoa...thanks. What a list, around 450 JS songs as registered by BMI. It
appears to be fairly comprehensive up to and not including Bandera, John and
Buffy Live in Scotland, Rocket Roy, Escape to Arizona and Rough Sketches.
Most, but not all, of the songs listed have shown up on recordings. And some
songs, even some that have been released--Tears of the Sun, for
example--aren't there. Angeles, Desperate Men, Wings of St. Michael and
others also among them.
Some of the never-released material is included, some not.
Still, a great list, and a treat for Stewart collectors. If you want to
print it all up, the 16 pages come in two-page segments and have to be
printed individually. Plus, you have to Page Down after each to continue, so
it takes some time.
Thanks for the tip.

Legendary Singer/Songwriter John Stewart
John has carved out a unique and deeply personal niche in the American
musical landscape. In a career that spans four decades, the artist has built
a body of work whose passion and lyrical depth have established the
singer/songwriter/guitarist (they forgot painter/author) as a quintessential
American artist. He will perform selections from his new release, Live at
the Turf, Scotland (really?...I hope they asked John).
He will be appearing at the Unity Palo Alto Church etc., etc., etc.
That's all the info...if you want an autograph, ask a question, or just want
to say hi, I would say this is your chance...."Dave"

From: sprest02@sprynet.com (ALLMuse)
Hello to Michelle the webmistress and all John Stewart fans (and to John
himself if he's reading)
Since you asked for a letter of introduction...
I discovered John Stewart through the front and the back door. Part
One of the story begins when as young teenager in the seventies I was
tracing the roots of one of my favorite groups (the Beach Boys) and was
led to the Kingston Trio's version of Sloop John B. I became hooked on
the Trio immediately (and even wrote a bit about it in PFMT newspaper).
I started work in top 40 radio in the late seventies and one of the
records we played a bit was Bombs Away Dream Babies...and just a bit of
research showed me that this John Stewart was the same John Stewart in
the Trio! Then began the quest for all of his albums...and the more
obscure they were, the more I seemed to love em.
My first concert of his was, I think, 1983 or 84 or so...in
Atlanta. This is the closest he's ever come to south Georgia that I know
of...a three hour drive one way! But I did it...he played at Banks and
Shane's...just him and his "band" - a little karaoke percussion
instrument (drum machine). I sent up a request to the stage for Dreamers
On The Rise and he played it! I was ecstatic.
It was just a couple of years ago that I saw him for the second
time...this time making a trek to Chattanooga, TN...about a six hour
drive one way...and had car trouble about 30 minutes shy of TN...but
believe it or not, another Stewart fan (from Florida) came to my
roadside rescue, and a gentleman involved in putting on the show got me
to the repair shop that day. The tickets cost $18...but the trip wound
up setting me back about $500!!!! (Yes, it was worth it)
John doesnt get round this area much...and his records are nigh on
impossible to find in the two mass appeal record stores we have here. So
I content myself with the occasional mailings I stumble on...and now Ive
found the AOL postings and this board. Hopefully it wont be so hard to
keep up with a performer that ranks up there in the tops of all time.
His ability to dig deep into the heart of what he writes about makes his
songs like the first time you ever saw a movie in color. It comes alive!
Thanks John for the music...and if I ever get to see him in concert
again...I'd try almost anything legal to get him to sing Lilly and
Joe...a song from Teresa and the Lost Songs that has been on my mind
since I first heard it a couple of years ago.
Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Thanks Michelle for being
the webmistress of this awesome service.
Steve

In the song "Dink's Blues", from the Bandera album, I'm having
difficulty deciphering what follows "If I had wings ...... I think what
I'm hearing is ...... "like no one else do" , although that doesn't rhyme
with the word "love" two lines later (not that it has to rhyme). Am I
hearing this correctly, or do I have wax in my ears?
Also, in the same song, I'll be damned if I can make out what preceeds
...... " I would not be sittin' in this prison, jail." It sounds to me like
......"If I was ridin' an Ohio rail, I would not be sittin' in this prison,
jail."
I don't mean to be overly critical; perhaps I'm just confused. It is ,
afterall, a beautiful song and, as a matter of fact, I recently told my wife
that I want it played at my funeral,in addition to Calif. Bloodlines (not
that I plan on dying any time soon mind you). By the way , I once saw John
sing "Bloodlines" at Jesse Uhnru's funeral( Calif. politition who died a few
years back).
One more thing; is that a dog I hear barking just before "Dink's Blues?"
(on the Bandera tape, not on the cd) Can anyone help me? Happy holiday
season to all.
