Michelle,
You once talked of getting a digest version...any progress. I love
reading the Stewartistas general comments, but often times it seems to be
a personal message service. Can we encourage folks to e-mail their
"sendee" directly? It just takes up so much time to get 23 "me toos" (I
only have a 14.4 at the moment.
Still a 'liner,

On seeing a fan's e mail asking if anyone had one of John's older albums, it
dawned on me to offer one suggestion that would have worked for me with
California Bloodlines, had not one of my friends found a cassette and copied
it for me:
Tower Records (just ask 800 directory) might have some of John's albums, they
did have California Bloodlines through their New York store but it was very
huge in price. Many of the cd's and albums through John are better
investments but that depends on what a person's looking for to complete a
collection. KShep87309

Thanks to Eddie from Shep. I like your "wonderfully terrible times"
description - how precious this package of pain feels, how carefully the
would is bandaged. I am hoping there are a lot of Angels on this line - I'll
be so glad to feel those wings beating, along with listening to the strings
and songs of John. Thanks Eddie - and why does your name sound so familier?

Eddie,
Welcome aboard!
You really described John's appeasl perfectly! The beauty of John's
music is its depth. Nearly every song has a story, but you don't have
to know the story to relate to it. "Dreamers on the Rise" is a good
case in point. As I've mentioned before, I asked John whether it was
about his days in the Trio or the Kennedy campaign (the song has
appeared on albums suggesting both possibilities), and he said, "Yes."
My students really like the song, without knowing anything about John.

Denny,
It's too late -- The Rolling Stone Music Encylopedia many years ago
described John Stewart fans
as a cult (true look it up). Yes Capitol (or as I prefer Capital - any
music for a buck) did in 1992 release a
CD call 'Greetings from John Stewart' as part of it's 'American Originals'
series Others in this so called
series include Andy Griffith, Hoyt Axton, Joy of Cooking. I swear to God!
I'm reading this from the pamplet
in the CD. OK the 'set list' was/is
1. If You Don't Look Around KT Time to Think
2. Chilly Winds KT College Concert
3. Holly on My MInd Signals Through the Glass
4. Mucky Truckee River " " "
5. California Bloodlines California Bloodlines
6. Mother Country " "
7. The Pirates of Stone Country Road " "
8. Lonesome Picker " "
9. July You're A Woman " "
10. Shackles And Chains " "
11. Never Goin' Back " "
12. Willard Willard
13. Oldest Living Son "
14. Clack Clack "
15. Friend Of Jesus "
16. Great White Cathedrals "
17. Belly Full Of Tennesee "
18. The Lady And The Outlaw 45 Single Version
19. Armstrong 45 Single Version
Actually not a bad bunch. But, I still wish they'd release all of Signals
Through The Glass on a
CD - Or let Ian Shaw and FolkEra get it cheap.
And for the rest of you BLrs, YOU HAVE JOINED A CULT!!!!
My wife tells me I'm too old for hero worship. I told her I don't worship
John Stewart - I just burn a few candles in front of his albums from
time to time.
By the way, Denny, how's the cow?
If you're drivin' on the highway...

From: Nalfnalf@aol.com
Hi gang. Sorry this is sort of late, but I just wanted to say how nice it
was to meet Catherine, Lee, Randi and Georgia at the Capitola show. If there
were other Bloodliners there, I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to you.
The theater was a cozy venue, and I enjoyed talking to John, Buffy and Dave
after the show. I didn't keep a song list (I can't write and chew gum at the
same time), but I think Randi did-maybe she can post it for all. It was a
beautiful weekend in Santa Cruz, with Saturday afternoon at the Beach
Boardwalk (but I had to miss the KPIG interview) and Sunday morning breakfast
outside at Aldo's.
Looking forward to the next time,
Nancy in San Jose.

From: ClackClack@aol.com
As Dave let out, John will be appearing at the Napa Valley folk festival on
September 20. This is good news for me as it is maybe 25 minutes from my
house. Kathy Mattea is also scheduled to attend. There's a website up that
you can visit for preliminary info. The festival is held at Skyline Park
(it's pretty nice- up in the foothills.) I'll be posting the link and info
for later reference on the tour page, but for those who want to check it out
now it is: http://www.napafest.com/index.html
Has links to a lot of stuff there. They apparently do a webcast of sorts so
you far away folks like Martyn in Manchester can still check out John &
Kathy!

Hate to bring this up, but I suspect we're geeting one of those
"Americans=literal/Europeans=ironic" things here. I'm no great fan of U2,
but I don't believe for a MINUTE that The Edge thinks Dylan wrote 'Daydream
Believer'.
This is exactly the sort of thing that a British or Irish musician would say
'deadpan', just to see what the response is (on second thoughts, s/he
probably wouldn't even be bothered about the response). I believe the
correct one would be a knowing grin. ;~)

Quite right Mike.
The cool thing is that U2 sang a song of mine. They don't owe me anything.
It's very Irish humor to say it's a Bob Dylan song. Obvioully it.s not.
I'm knocked out that they did it.
My good friends in the music biz emailed to say it was a cool thing
to have the nippest band around to a cover of one of my songs. To just look
at Edges intro is combing the hairs on the back of the elephant.
I got a teriffic hit in one day Pete Seeger said my banjo playing was GREAT
on a sing I did for a tribute cd and U2 sang one of my songs. Even though
some friends choose to treat it as a joke.

Hi Folks,
Saturdays U2 concert was reviewed in this mornings edition of the San Diego
Union. They correctly identified John as the author of "Daydream Beleiver"
The reviewer was puzzled, however at Edge's choice of material. I'd say his
choice was excellent! Merle

ROY - "eavesdropped" on your mail to Denny - (ha). You mentioned a Capitol (-al)
release with John Stewart + Hoyt Axton, and others.... do you remember Hoyt Axton?
He is another singular sort of -singer- no pun intended, just like John
Stewart. My brother (now an angel, maybe always was), liked both of these
guys and collected every album and collection or anthology with any songs by
these guys. He liked others too - just glad to see someone else with tastes
and knowledge in a similar groove. KShep87309

If you'll pardon the commercial plug, both John / Homecoming (see
listmaster Michele's website) and Rediscover Music (our sister
company - who carry all the Folk Era releases, as well as a great
many more Stewart & popular Folk titles - 800-232-7328 for a
catalogue) are wonderful resources to build up your Stewart
collection.
Bear Family Records (in Germany - we have to import the albums, so
their a little pricy) has released CB and Willard as a two albums on
one CD set, as they've done with Phoenix & Cannon's/Wingless Angels.
Great linear notes too. Harder to find, but Line Records (again in
Germany) has done releases of Blondes, Lonesome Picker, Sunstorm, and
Neon Beach. Finally Polygram UK has done both the Dream Babies
albums on a single CD, so most of the Stewart Catalogue is on CD,
just needs to get imported.
All that hasn't been issued is Fire In The Wind (from RSO - now owned
by Polygram), & Signals Through The Glass (Capitol). Those are both
albums we'd all love to see, but the major labels usually make it
nearly prohibitively expensive to liscense material from them -
guarantees of 10 or 20,000 unit sales (which means we must pay for 10 or
20 thousand CD's - whether we sell them or not!) are not uncommon.
Also - I know people have asked about either songbooks or videos at
some point. Getting the rights to videotaped material can be very
expensive, and it's just not something Folk Era has the cash to do -
even though goodness knows what's sitting in people's archives
somewhere.
I don't know the legal muck-a-muck that probably surrounds a
songbook, but from what I know of the old books I have seen or heard
of, 9 times out of 10 they're so inaccurate (or in such weird keys -
Fflat minor or something) that you're better off finding a guitar
teacher with a good ear and paying them to help you transcribe it.
Gotta run!
Sincerely,
Ian

Subj: RE: Bloodliners at Capitola
Date: 97-04-30
From: rcaplow@decisive.com (Randi Caplow)
thanks, nalfnalf, I did maintain a song list. I'm sorry it took so long to
post my review, but I've been extremely busy at work the last couple days. It
was a pleasure meeting you and the other potential bloodliner recruits at the
show; I'm sorry I missed meeting the other Bloodliners you mentioned and who
clapped when John asked how many of us were out there. But seeing John, Dave
and Buffy, as usual, is always something to look forward to.
I too spent a lovely day on the beach in Capitola and had dinner on the
esplanade before the show. I did not catch the KPIG interview either; if any
of you did, please post a little review of it.
The show was great; John came out announcing he was wearing the shades Bluesy
gave him. Cool shades, Bluesy. Also the announcement you'll all be thrilled
about is that John will be appearing again at the Capitola Theatre with the
Kingston Trio (I kid you not) on October 2 and 3. Tickets go on sale in June
(i think). I'm sure details will be posted to the list or web site as it gets
closer.
Set list (and I do not have the song titles right, but I'd rather spend my
time listening than concentrating on what the hell is the actual name of that
song..):
Johnny Flamingo on the Blue Dream Road
Anna on a Memory (?)
Ticket to the Stars
Irresistable Targets
Dreamers on the Rise
Bolinas
Reason to Believe by Tim Hardin (sung so beautifully by Buffy)
Silver Wings by Merle Haggard (buffy wanted to do this song, but she had to
sing the Tim Hardin one first)
Strange Rivers
July you're a woman
A new one; I have no idea what it's called. He kept singing about a renegade.
California bloodlines merged into a fantastic medley with
the-road-is-my-woman song and Because of the Dancer
{break}
An old folk song I believe is called Saro-Jane
China Sky from Secret Tapes
Another new one, inspired by the book the Golden President. Don't know title,
but remember the line: "star in the black sky shining"
Wingless Angels Medley with a song about "survivors" and (to my delight and
great surprize, because it's one of my favorites), Seven Angels
Keeper of the Flame
Neon Road (from Rough Sketches)
Midnight Wind, merged with Dogs of San Jon (from Rough Sketches)
Then he brought out the 12-string. God that thing sounds beautiful.
Mother Country
Encores: She Belives in Me merged with Josie (Have no idea the actual song
titles) and the Pirates of Stone County Road.
Experts can fill in the song-title gaps. Also, I might have missed a song.
The Cadillac one maybe. I love John's shows. The only criticism I have is a
few timing slippages, mostly from Buffy's percussion. My advice (buffy knows
I love her, so I can say this): Listen carefully to Dave. The man is a human
metronome, I've never seen anyone who can maintain more perfect timing
without a reference. On the slider thing, it's best to stay either on the 1
and 3 or the 2 and 4, but a couple times you shifted between the two. Also,
try experimenting with a few different beats on the click-clack thing, the
same one for each fast song can get a little monotonous. That's just my
little humble opinion.
Thanks for another wonderful show, I love you guys!!
PS Everyone who hasn't bought Rough Sketches yet needs to RUSH to get it. It
is very, very intense.

Catherine, Nancy, Lee and Randi, et al: I also am sorry I haven't
gotten back to the list with my comments. I can't add anything to what
all you have said, because you are much more eloquent than I am.
I love John's music and have for years, but I don't know why. It just
speaks to my heart.
I guess the the biggest kick I got out of the evening, was watching
my 2 daughters enjoy the concert. They were force fed John back
in the mid-70s, and considered him "old fogey" music. Watching
them sing the words of songs they have not heard in 20 years was
beautiful. The only problem, John didn't sing too many songs from
back then. Both of them sang right along with California Bloodlines
and Mother Country.
I was really happy to add to the concert's bottom line. I bought 7 CD's,
3 old (I have the records, and no player), 3 new and the "Best of" for
one of my daughter's for Mother's Day.
Now, I have questions about the October show... It's 2 nights, October
2 and 3. Are there going to be 2 shows each night? Is it going to be
general admission or seat assigned? (Getting to Capitola in the late
afternoon/early evening from San Jose is a commuter's nightmare.)
As soon as any of you know the answers, please post it.
Cheers, Georgia Navarro
