Roy: LETS GO!!!!!!!!!!
I just got done with a abbreviated 66 journey a couple of weeks back
(Barstow CA - Gallup NM) on my way back from vacation. I'd like to
suggest the time from of early to mid-April. Youv'e got spring break to
work with (for those of you teach or in school, weather's nice, etc.)
I honestly think you could hit all the high spots from OK City to LA in
a week. If you reallly got nuts you could spend a ,month out there and
not see it all - but that makes a good reason to come back later.
I don't know anyone at K-Mart, but I might be able to find an interested
ear at the local PBS station in Albuquerque as well as the FOX station
in Phoenix.
My wife runs a travel reservation agency, and has lots of connections
out there in motel-land
(and bus-land for that matter) and could make all the lodging and
travel arrangements as necessary.
I don't think I want to take this on singlehandedly, but I'll help out
wherever I can.
Let's gass up the old Mustang and hit The (Neon) Road!

PS to Angelbravo. Saw Angel D. in Seligman - he says "hi".

I have been a fan of John Stewart and his music for almost longer than I care to
admit. I actually started following the Kingston Trio around when Dave Guard
was with the group and continued when John joined. I have had the good fortune
to see the trio several times before the broke up and several times after with
the New Kingston Trio. I've also been lucky enough to see John in concert
several time. The last time was just this Saturday in Capitola with his wife
Buffy. I had a great time and really enjoyed the show and especially the chance
to see and hear Buffy live. She has a great voice and is a nice person. Since
I was just caught in a corporate downsizing on Thursday, this show was just what
I needed to pick me up.

ps: in answer to the question about how to identify ourselves at shows we might
consider what Jerry Jeff Walker does. His organization puts out a T shirt with
the Jerry Jeff logo on it and his Email address right on the front. We could be

Hi Kathleen,
I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing sad and lonely times. Yes, I
know I am fortunate to have been born in California, but remember, we
West Coasters have to go through hard times the same as every one else.
Personally, I really enjoy the East Coast, especially New England. But I
know when you're blue it clouds your vision to the beauty surrounding
you. You write that you are hoping to travel, maybe The Road is what you
need. I've always found it the best therapy. And don't give up, keep
believing in love, I know I did and it has paid off for me in the form
of my very wonderful husband as well as my friends and family.

I don't have any easy answers Kathleen, but I do send you good wishes.

Hi folks,

I'm new to this list, been listening to John Stewart for years and have
recently been putting my limited musical talent to the task of rhythum
chording some of his works. What I'm interested in getting are either
real sheet music or some tablature and even more chords to compare what
my ear has produced. If anyone is interested let me know... I could
help post some pages too if that's useful.

My bags are packed. Let's go!

Actually, it would be cool if John could schedule the Rt. 66 tour to include
a stop at the Rt. 66 Rendezvous in San Bernardino sometime in Mid Sept. I
tried to help arrange this last year, but things didn't work out.

At last year's Rt. 66 Rendezvous over 200,000 people showed up over a three
day period. Also, over 700 hot rods and classic cars. The open headers
contest was a real hoot, but because John couldn't make it we had to listen
to The Ventures (surf's up) instead.

Maybe he can make it this year. This event gets national and international
press, and would be a perfect climax (actually Santa Monica Pier would be
the climax, but this could be a semi-climatic event) to a full blown Rt. 66
Tour.

What do you think John & Dave?

                                                     Keep it flyin' , MOTT

Regarding talk of Route 66:
I took off from my ordinary aerospace job and rode my Harley from Fontana,
California (Foothill Blvd. is part of old 66) to Laughlin, Nevada and back this
past weekend. Conventional wisdom would have the fastest, safest journey to be
Interstate 40, but my fellow travelers and I decided to ride as much as we could
on what had once been America's Main Street. In so doing we saw the California,
Nevada and Arizona deserts as the Joad family would have seen it in The Grapes
of Wrath, and as my own family experienced it when we drove west for the first
time in 1960.

No fast food. No self-service gas stations lighting up the unspoiled desert like
a Vegas casino. No billboards. Not even an ancient Burma Shave sign. It would
have been wonderful to find one of those dusty souvenir stands I remember from
when I was a boy - selling warm soda and inviting the unsuspecting traveler to
view the "baby rattlers." (Any Bloodliners remember that?) We stopped in Amboy
(population 20) and Essex, California (population 100; we didn't see anyone).

America is still out there, folks. One can only imagine what a journey over the
Mother Road would be like in the company of John, Buffy, and a busload of
Stewartistas.

Thanks to Michelle for warm welcome.
I waited for a while to try to understand what the list was about
before posting my introduction.
I live near London, England (was born and raised in London), semi long
in tooth ( refer other postings)
Have listened to John since c1970 but haven't been able to get all his
albums (I had many on vinyl but am trying to get them on CD).
The only other person I've known who knew about John was one of my
brothers - it has been a real eye-opener since I searched the Web for
"John Stewart"
I also like Jerry Jeff, John Prine, Bob Dylan.

One thing I'd like to share - the following often occurs to me (and each
time it does I am amazed). John lived and grew up in a place and under
circumstances that I know very little about - yet thousands of miles
away a person in London can relate to the words and music and feel a
shared experience. This may be taken for granted by many but as I've
said I still often marvel at it and consider it a wonderful 'indicator'
of some kind about the 'nature' of humankind - that absolute strangers
unkown to each other can relate through words and music in this way and
experience similar emotions.

Brief intro over - will write again when I have more to say.

Dave, if Napa is firm, please advise: is the folk festival taking place
in the town of Napa or somewhere else in the Napa Valley? This will
help those of us who must book rooms/campgrounds in order to attend.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the Band U2 is leading their
audience on a sing-a-long of 'Daydream Beleiver' at their concerts. One of
the band members introduced the song as one of his favorite Bob Dylan songs.
Well, at least Bob got a compliment by being put in the same 'class' as
John... I'm sure the band will hear about it from the Dylan heads. Now you
know how funky rock stars can be....
I'd be interested in the 66 trip, too. Over & out.

Bernie: Welcome to the Blood. I too am a frustrated picker whose
learned John's tunes by ear. I'd love to find someone who has a spare
music portfolio of the PHX Concerts. I saw one billions of years ago
but couldn't afford it (I was in high school). Now such things are
collector's items. Be sure to get John's Pocket Song Book - it's a good
place to start.

I've got a never ending collection of JS tunes in my head - let me
know what you want to work on. Most of my arrangements are simpler than
John's - but they sound OK to me. Every time I see John I come away
with increadible inspiration dampened by increadible frustration that I
just can't play that well. Argh.

Please e-mail me at above for more.

Okay gang, check this out:

April 28 SF Chronicle, review of first show of U2's worldwide tour:

"In a show where irony has replaced much of the whimsy that marked the ZooTV
tour, it was the Edge [U2's guitarist] who supplied the evening's
light-hearted highlight with a solo rendition of the Mokees chestnut
'DAYDREAM BELIEVER,' leading the [38,000 folks in the] audience in a
sing-along as the lyrics scrolled across the [huge $6 million] video screen.
'This is my favorite BOB DYLAN SONG,' he said, introducing the number."
 (emphasis added.)

Is John rich now?

Date:	97-04-29
From:	oakpath@webtv.net (Dennis Pezzani)

Hi everyone,
This is my introduction letter to all you other fans. First let me say
that I'm new (about a week) to this E-Mail stuff, but I'm a longtime fan
of John's. I don't know the average age out there, but I'm 51. (Hope
that's not too old to join the group!!!!) I've been listening since the trio days.
I can remember the "Close Up" album's debut and wondering "who the hell is
that new guy where Dave Guard should be?" I've raised five children to John's
great music, and I think they hated to hear me sing while cutting the grass,
painting, or whatever. I read that some of you were looking for chords to as
many songs as you could find. I've been a picker for many years, but have no
music training. It's all by ear, but I can help with quite a few. As I get more
familiar with how this chat thing works I'll let anyone who is
interested have anything I've figured out. Is there a "fake book" out
there someplace? That would be slick.. Asf faras favorites, how can they
all be listed? They seem to run in cycles for me. Right now my favorites
are "Angels with Guns", "Golden Gate", "Shadows of the Angel's Wings"
(from Arizona tape), "Cheyenne" (any version), and the new "Interview
with an Angel". I don't know if that tells you all anything about me,
but I assume as time goes on we will all indeed become good friends. I
have seen John only as a member of the trio. If he toured thre St. Louis
it was probably when my kids were tots and I was busy trying to educate
them Well, they are all grown now, so I can chase my interests. My
collection is pretty complete (I believe), but I guess you never know.
Can anyone help me with the only missing link I am aware of: "John
Stewart - An American Original" (Capiol). I have no clue what's on it.
It is supposedly a 1992 issue. Is it all a reissue of Trio stuff or
possibly the first couple of LPs when he was still Capitol property?
Let me know if you can. Anyways, I didn't mean to bore you all to
tears, but I've loved John's music for about 35 years (some of you
probably aren't that old!!!!!!!!!) and am excited to find out he has a
boatload of loyal fans like myself. We're pretty laid back here in the
midwest (I once had a Bostonian ask me if ALL people in St. Louis raised
cows - where the hell did that thought come from?), but there are a lot
of us who appreciate John's philosophy of life as it seems to come thru
his music. Good night to all and thanks for giving me an avenue to pursue
this great interest of mine!
One last thought: I hope to hell that a group of folks who share the
same music tastes won't be called a "cult" as we grow - just kidding!!
Hope we all can say "I Remember America" for a long, long time.
Denny Pezzani (aSt. Louis fan)

Dear Catherine, I want to thank you for caring. I just hope I can get out of
this mental "smog". Going through a breakup can do this, too. I have a lot
to be thankful for, though. If you ever visit New England, I live in
Massachusetts near Springfield, and I would love to meet you and introduce
you to my friends who brought me to John's recent concert in Northampton. We
told him when we briefly met him that our entire friendship originally formed
just because we were at a music party and one of us played July You're A
Woman. From that moment, four of us bonded on the spot and the friendship
has lasted over 10 years! So, we'd love to have you if you're ever this way.
I am glad you took the time to answer, I will get through this and hopefully
end up at the California end of Route 66. Take care - KShep87309

Does anyone know what this is? Are these lines in another song or is
it an old hymn or something that was used?

Hi JS fans!

In reply to your request for an introduction. Am 48, live in Ohio, been a JS
fan for about 15 years, have seen him perform about 5 times (often in some
real dives), seem to prefer John's newer material (generally speaking.) Have
never heard John with either a band backing him or his wife and am sure I
would enjoy that experience My primary diversions (aside from teaching and
coaching) are minor league baseball, harness racing and JS. In fact I have
started a practice of re-naming my new racehorses after JS songs. The latest
name is Reason to Rise.

Some local JS fans have arranged to have JS come to town for a concert on May
31st. As I understand it he will be at an informal gathering for about 25
organizers on the 30th, each of the organizers will bring 6- 10 folks for
the next night's show. Sounds like fun, the site is Happy Days Nature Center
midway between Cleveland and Akron.

Thanks for listening and thanks John for the years of good music!

Hi Dennis, and welcome to " Bloodlines " Regarding your question on the
AMERICAN ORIGINALS CD. It was released by Capitol in 1992, and contains
some KT material , beginning with a live version of Chilly Winds, preceeded
by a hilarious monolog. This is followed by "If You Don't Look Around "
from the KT Time To Think LP, then some songs from Signals through The Glass
(John & Buffy), followed by selected songs from Calif. Bloodlines, and
Willard. It ends with the original 45 rpm version of Armstrong. A real
collectors item for sure, and I believe it is no longer available. I
remember, at the time, Robert Hillburn wrote a very complimentary review of
the album in yhe L.A. Times. Lots of luck trying to find this one.

Ron - that was a loaded story! U-2 is an Irish group, right? No excuse, it
doesn't take any of the thunder out of your tale - how tragic and absurd.
And I don't suppose anyone even yelled out a correction to these lads,
either, as if they would have been heard. Funny, I just saw John perform -
and every time anyone called out to him, he either answered, or later played
most of the requests called out. It was so intimate.
Something like that wouldn't happen at a John Stewart concert ..KShep87309
