From:	RGodwin495@aol.com

UPDATE - FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THE APRIL CHAT

RE: THE 1974 JOHN STEWART INTERVIEW BY
                                  LEE MASTERS & HANK COOKENBOO

First, my apologies in advance to the vast majority of Bloodliners for
taking up your time and file space here on Bloodlines just to update those 10
or 12 who participated in the chat session earlier this month.

I know of no other way to get back to everyone on the chat except thru
Bloodlines. So please bear with me a bit. . .
. . hope you don't find this too boring
or impertinent!! Feel free to dial out of here anywhere along this posting
 if you start losing interest.

To those on the April Chat: As you recall, that night I mentioned the
Masters/Cookenboo interview/article, and how I had just recently obtained a
copy.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime interview which took place with John here in
Phoenix the day after the "Phoenix Concerts" performances in March, 1974.
It appeared in the April, 1974 issue of "Flash", a local
entertainment/media magazine.

Lee Masters and Hank Cookenboo, two popular Phoenix radio/media
personalities in the early '70s, had the good fortune of John agreeing to an
exclusive interview. As they wrote, "John suggested that we join him at the
downtown Ramada Inn where they (John, Buffy and kids) were all staying and
spend Sunday afternoon sitting around the pool. . .and talk things over."

This interview is a real gem. Very positive. Candid. Looking back, an
excellent prognosticator of the future. Extremely interesting, especially
John's comments on the just-finished live album, campaigning for Bobby
Kennedy, "Signals. ..", ideas for songs (including "Mother Country", "Road
Away"), producers and other personnel.

     For example:

LEE: "Did you do anything special or different for the recording in Phoenix
-- any special songs of comments?"

JOHN: "No, we just gave it our best shot -- both nights. We'll use the
Saturday night concert almost entirely for the album."

LEE: "How might this (Phoenix Concerts) album differ from your previous
studio albums?"

JOHN: "It won't be just another album, that's for sure. It will be the
best album yet."

HANK: "How do you get an idea for a song. . . how about "Daydream Believer"?

JOHN: "I have no idea where that came from. I was just writing one day and
it came out."

.......so, I trust this gives you at least a glimpse of what kind of article
you're in for!

I have a copy of the interview, and have mailed another to Ron. We're
probably only two of a half dozen people on planet Earth to have retained
this archive. **My friend, Tom Story, who shot the photographs, needs to
be given all the credit for bringing this interview to my attention.**

I've checked with Ron about what we should do with the interview. There are
several ways we could make it known to all JS fans. He's considering
posting the interview on Clack's Cellar. Since it is rather a large file,
with graphics, he needs to work out the technicalities.

We do agree on one thing: This interview/article is a classic!

And how priceless it is. . . especially now when overlaid with 23 years of
retrospect, as a window into John's earlier career years.

As soon as we start coming up with some answers regarding distribution, Ron
and I will post updates.

             ---------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry again for bothering the other 155 members of Bloodlines. . . hope I
didn't bore you too much. . . or that you clicked out of this file early on.

.................. but on second thought, you're probably all sitting there, perhaps
thinking something like this:

    "Masters/Cookenboo interview??"

....... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..."First, I miss out on 20 years of John's music and
concerts, and now I'm missing out on a 23-year-old magazine interview???!!

All because I missed out on the April chat!!! Wait a minute. . . whatever
happened to my loyal friends and front row dance partners?!"

Well, fellow Bloodliners, you know we would never let you down. . . we
just wanted to start this post off with a sense of tongue-in-cheek humor –
an introductory dance down near the front row -- to get everyone's
attention and curiosity.

You may have missed out on the chat, some album releases and concerts along
the way, but you'll be among the first to re-read this interview. . . which
has been mellowing like fine wine here in the rarefied air of the Arizona
desert, awaiting the right moment to be (re)opened. . . and shared. . . and
savored.

I trust the 'boredom' factor didn't get too high on this post(!). . . just
keep your patience intact. . . and we'll be back soon with an update on where
to read all of the 1974 Masters/Cookenboo '1974 John Stewart Interview'.

                    Until then...........

Rickster. . . . .with a lot of help from Clack

Thanks Icfoster for the good explanation of John's lyrics to "Bolinas."
Wonder if you liked the song... it was real pretty . The bridge of it
sang, "When the world was spinnin a song and it whistled the wind, carry it
on - when the world was spinnin a song, and it whistled the wind - carry it

Agreed, Don. You named three of my very favorites. (I would certainly buy
your dream CD). But each tape also stands on its own (I'm dreaming of the
boxed set)."Rocket Roy," especially, is too often overlooked. It is smart
and complex, and still manages to be breathtakingly beautiful. This is the
tape that convinced me that John Stewart is not only a talented songwriter,
but an important American writer.

From:	DBATTI@aol.com

Hey Gang,

Wanna hear John do a live interview on Saturday April 26th? That's today or
tomorrow depending on where you are. Go to http://www.kpig.com/welcome.htm,
then click on "radio online" and you can listen to KPIG in Santa Cruz where
John will be doing an interview with Buffy starting around 3:15 or 3:30
Pacific time. Sorry there wasn't more lead time to let you know, but I just
found out myself.

I believe Jamie Wyeth is Andrew's grandson.

By the way Nanc, Scottsdale is tentatively scheduled for June 15th with a
Flagstaff and Tucson date being worked on by Gordoom. Also Napa Valley Folk
Festival on Sept 20th has been added...will put up a full itinerary as soon
as dates are firmed up.

Ciao...Dave

Hi, I don't find anything on these bloodlines boring. Since you went in to
such detail about an interview from years ago, can you maybe help me locate
one I read in early seventies in some magazine that used to run a colulmn
called "BIO"? I think it was Life magazine, but I can't remember. There was
this great interview with John Stewart. He said where he was born "on a hot day.
Mymother was there at the time." There were other classic statements, like,
"In high school, I was extremely unpopular one year and extremely popular the
next without ever knowing why."......He also mentioned meeting Frank Zappa
who taught him the song "Streets of Laredo." John compared this experience to
"something like being turned onto dope by the Lennon Sisters." Does anyone
remember this , or even better, have a copy? If so, please let me know and maybe
you could even fax a copy to me? And if anyone knows John enough to ask him if
he has a copy, could you ask him, or tell me how to write directly to him? Thanks

Take it easy, Shep, you're not in danger of being left behind. I cannot
give you details--I don't think there are any. It's just that John keeps
threatening to make us all drive Route 66 with him on one of his
pilgrimages. And you know us, we're just crazy enough to want to go. The
first I heard of it was from The Finger about a year and a half (I
think) ago. There's been talk of Nanci Griffith and Rosanne Cash going
along and the whole thing being filmed as a documentary of some sort (a
study of serious folk musicologists no doubt). I'm quite certain it will
happen someday so you should contact John if you are interested in
getting the current and correct details. The Finger said we should write
to them to let them know we were interested in making the tour.

Hi Shep,
The Finger is the J.S. newsletter. You can get 4 issues for $6.00 if
you write to: The Finger
	                 P.O.Box 2050
	             Malibu,CA 90265-7050

You could write to that address or E-mail Dave (DBatti) or John
(Angelbravo) and let them know you'd like to make the trip. They will
let you know when there is a definite date and time or if you should
contact someone else who may be in charge of coordination.

Shep, you should check out all of the Stewart websites. You'll find lots
of info, including past issues of The Finger. Catherine

FYI KShep...
John is a member of this list and is privy too all the posts. You can write
to him here, or post privately to him at AngelBravo@aol.com.

The Finger is the snailmail newsletter that comes out once in a while. To
subscribe to The Finger, send $6 to Homecoming Records, PO Box 2050,
Malibu, CA 90265-7050.

And for the rest of you on Bloodlines:
Here's the website post of the month. I get the biggest kick out of getting
posts from people who have stumbled across the website and suddenly realize
that John continues to generate his unique brand of music.

*****************************************************************************
I just want to say that I'm an old Kingston Trio fan. I feel when Dave
[Guard] left the group and John stepped in, it was magic. "Children of the
Morning" is one of my favorite KT albums.

I love "AIRDREAM BELIEVER" and "BULLETS IN THE HOURGLASS". I looking to round
out my collection of Johns albums.

I was wondering if "BLONDES" is still available. I fried my tape one day and
I find out that it may not be available. Say it isn't so!

Thank you for bringing your music into my life!

Did anyone else hear this live interview.? It started late due to traffic problems
in the bay area, but was fun nonetheless. John performed Johnny Flamingo on
the Blue Dream Road and Dogs of San Jon. Sounded great even with the somewhat
poor quality of the Web "radio online".

I hope that those who are lucky enough to be at the Captitola show tonight
have a great time.

Yes, I heard the interview, too.

If I had been stuck in traffic that long, I don't think
I would have been as cheerful as John and Buffy were.

There was a "ham cam" on the radio station's page
that updated every 60 seconds, so there was sort of
video as well as audio. I copied some of the pictures to
disk. If someone more expert can tell me how and
it doesn't violate any law or ethic, I'll send them out to the
group. Can I just attach them to a message?

John also played his new song, "Black Sky Shining."

To steal an old Kingston Trio joke, I wish I had had
my tape recorder and automatic copyrighting machine
going for that one. Those of you who have heard it in
concert and said how good it was aren't kidding at all.

But then, Bloodliners don't kid around. ( A lot.) :)

I'm tempted to hope "Black Sky" is one of the bonus tracks
being floated around for that new CD, but that song
may be more special than a bonus track.

Charlie

Some of you have already heard this so bear with me.
I may have some of it not 100% correct so, 'Quote me if I'm wrong'.
A hard drive crash earlier this year destroyed all of my old e-mail.
(Backup to diskette stupid)

John's obsession (his word) with Rt 66 is pretty well known to all of us.
Sometime about 2 years ago there was discussion of the BBC filming a show
about 'The Mother Road' with John as a 'guide'. The idea would be to travel the
road and visit interesting sites along the way and I suppose include performances
by John. And there was talk of Nanci Griffith and Rosanne Cash participating.
The BBC backed out. John had been asking audiences if anyone wanted to go with
him. Wonderdog put the question on his web site and people began responding to
Angelbravo. At one point I believe there were about 40 people. Unfortunately, there
were nearly 40 reasons why we all couldn't go at the same time. At the end, it was
decided that there would be no trip (at least for now) John replied that the number of
people who could make it would 'all fit in my car'. Ron Beffa and I both agreed that
we could handle that but...
I emailed a suggestion to John that:
        1. Lets plan a trip farther in advance (6 months to a year) to let people
plan vacations - quit jobs - send their children to foster homes etc.
                (JOKE JOKE JOKE)
        2. Maybe KMart would be interested in some sort of tie in since they've
been pushing RT 66 jeans etc.
        3. Let's get a bus - a band bus - a Bandera bus? Less hassle than all
driving and trying to not get lost. We might still get lost but at least
                there's someone to talk to.
There was some brief discussion of a possible Spring 97 trip but considering how busy
John has been (Darwin's Army, etc.) I don't think we could have done it anyway.

Now, if John is willing to particpate, and have a busload of 'serious folk musicologists'
aka 'nuts' follow him maybe we can get this thing flying. We need to figure out when
and how far. I don't favor mid summer, as John said it's HOT. I was never that much of a
summer child. Late Spring or Early fall seem to be a good idea. Chicago to LA (or LA to
Chicago) seems a long way I'll suggest Oklahoma City to LA, but will go along with
whatever. John - can you give some estimates of how long it takes for various legs of 66.
Are we talking about a week, two weeks, two months??
Is there anyone on Bloodlines who happens to be (or know) a travel agent?
Someone who knows how to set something like this up? Anybody have any connections
to KMart? or PBS or someone who might like to film something like this? We've go a lot
more people on this net than last year (thanks Michelle)
This could also provide a built in audience for a 'Texas tour' and maybe Spitbucket could
get some bookings.(How many performers bus their audience from gig to gig?) Ian - could
FolkEra get some kind of publicity out of this? Bloodliners seem smarter than the average
bear - we should be able to get this going.

If you're drivin' on the highway...
Roy

Sorry Nance-

catching up on my email. Missed the radio broadcast too. Darn.

Like the bus tour, it seems, setting up the house concert far enough in
advance is a toughie. We've all got lives. There was a brief moment in time
when it looked like next weekend...But, am hopeful that we might get it going
later this year. There's been background chat and inquiries to me but I've
kept it off Bloodlines. I'm still quite hopeful that we can make it a
reality. When things get closer to reality then we can start hollering.

Hope we get some good Capitola reports

I too heard the interview (on the radio--KPIG is the station of choice
at our house). I heard "Johnny Flamingo" and "Neon Road" for the first
time. After hearing these songs I actually became less excited about
seeing John in Capitola and more excited about finding Dave in Capitola
so I could purchase a copy of "Rough Sketches".
My husband had spent the whole day re-plumbing our entire house so I
stood in line for seats while he had Margaritas in a Capitola pub. John
strolled out a couple of times while I waited. I believe some people in
line got autographs. I (the soul of consistency) behaved as I usually do
when I am within a few feet of Mr. Stewart: my heart pounds wildly, my
mouth freezes shut and I manage only to steal a few fertive glances in
his direction (he's like the sun, you know, look too long and you may be
blinded). When they let us in, I found Dave, asked him for the location
of any other Bloodliners and bought "Rough Sketches". I met Bloodliner
Georgia and her two daughters, as well as Nancy of San Jose (NalfNalf).
Enjoyed talking to them. Disappointed that I did not find Paul (Paul,
did you make it?) Georgia said she talked to Lee, but she and I could
not relocate him. (Georgia, please write me, I'd like to have your
E-mail address)
John came out wearing the coolest pair of sunglasses. He talked about
Bloodlines (asked how many of us were there) and announced that the cool
shades had been sent to him by our very own BLUESY!!! The show was
excellent; I did not keep a list of all songs played, perhaps someone
else did and will post it. He opened with "Johnny Flamingo on the Blue
Dream Road" which sounded great. Yes, you Easterners were right about
"Black Sky Shining", surely a new classic. I loved all of the show but I
think the highlight for me was "Freeway Pleasure", one of my favorites,
done solo, just John and guitar. John and Dave looked and sounded great
and Buffy beamed radiant beauty. John, as usual, was funny and handled
the audience with ease. All the posters claim the Capitola Theatre is
newly refurbished; didn't seem that way to me. Those are the same seats
I sat on as a teenager in the Sixties. Not that I'm complaining, I loved
the theatre: small and cozy and quite comfortable. We also received the
rather astounding news that John will return there in October to play
with the Kingston Trio. This will be, as Peter said, the biggest	show to
ever hit Capitola. (Georgia and Nancy: we'll be there, will you?)
Well, I gotta go, the sun is out and it appears to be another beautiful
Northern California day. I'll check back this evening hoping to find
some observations from other attending 'liners.

Hi, Catherine - Shep here again. I just read your e-mail about the Capitola
and loved your analogy of looking at John too long being like looking at the
sun too long. I only met him recently, in the east (Northampton). I will
have to hear "Black Sky Shining" if it rings true to the eastern geography

AT least right now I am feeling sad - sorry to be blue on this nice
