Can anyone give a brief explanation for the words to the song "Bolinas"?
"Time in Bolinas is so very small - the clock on the court house ain't
workin at all - and the mayor of Bolinas is diggin for clams but folks in
Bolinas - they don't give a damn -" well it's pretty obvious, but that song
is worth another listen or two or two thousand - as is Lonesome Picker -
and well , all of them, really - KShep87309

Can any of you "Lonesome Pickers" out there recommend favorite strings for

I'm using GHS light guage White Bronze strings, because I tend to make
strings go dead quickly. The white bronze seems to last longer. If you
don't have the kind of acid perspiration I have, Bright Bronze sounds a
bit brighter. I've always found GHS to be great strings.

Okay guys, if you really wanta get into Ghost of the Superchief, Top This:

I used to play touch football
in the Chapman Woods
neighborhood.

(actually Bill Lambert chipped my front teeth playing touch football there
and twenty-five years later I had to have them root canalled as a result)

No, I really don't think any of yuze can top that.

I've found two brands I have liked. I use Pearse (I think Gary Pearse,
I'll double check) on my 6-string. They have a balanced sound and seem to
be very long lasting. On my Ovation 12-string I have stayed with the
original Adamas light gauge phosphour bronze. I have only broken 1
string in the year I have had it. They also seem very balanced for
sound. Speaking of "Lonesome Picker" and in reference to JS songs covered
by others, Glen Yarbrough recorded "Lonesome Picker" on an early LP.

Subj:	What is Bolinas?

KShep-there is a small town sort of on the West Coast of Marin County,
just over the hill from Mill Valley. The very small town takes great
pride in being isolated and wanting to be left alone. They keep taking
down the road signs that the state puts up telling outsiders how to get
to Bolinas. To say it's a laid back way of life may be the supreme
understatement, even for notroiously laid back Marin. The clock on the
courthouse doesn't work, the mayor digs for clams, nobody cares.
(Although even though I was raised in Marin and went to Bolinas from time
to time, I don't remember there actually being a courthouse--this may
just be a bit of songwriter license) But it's just that kind of place.
John's lyrics caught the feel of the town.

Bob Foster (Marinite from 1954 through 1974, with parents still living
there)

Bluesy33: I've used Martin Marquis on my Guild GF55 six string for
years (and on its predessor F-30). I also used Marquis on my old
battle-scarred F412 for a long time but as an experiment tried a set of
Dean Markley "Earthwoods" light gauge and love them. They last longer
than the Martins and they're cheaper too! But nothing beats the Marquis
on the 6 string. Now that I've opened up a hornet's nest of string
discussion, I'll shut up.

Dear Karen and Duncan and Mott,
Also, in addition to Pat Boone and the other person you named (plus Elvis in
his dressing room), Robert Goulet had a version of July You're A Woman in
1976 or 1977.
Of course, I did it and so did a group of other musicians I met and bonded
with, buy we were only local heroes and heroines - mostly just
hero-worshippers. There is no one like John Stewart ! KShep87309

Stewart, also really liked Yarbrough. My brother is an angel now, but
sometimes I need help to remember all the neat people he shared with me - and
Glen Yarbrough was one I hadn't thought of - thanks~! KShep87309

Hi. I joined the Bloodliners about two weeks ago after I heard John and
Dave play at the Caffee Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY. It was the first
time I heard them live, and I was enchanted.

I only "discovered" John's music two years ago, when my friend sent me
some of his CDs. Unfortunately, I had to send them back and couldn't buy
more here in upstate NY. So I was thrilled to get a chance to hear him
live and buy a few CDs of my own.

At the beginning, John asked for requests. So, of course I called for
Pirates of Stone County Road, my favorite. He said he'd play it in the
second half. I was so disappointed when he ended the set and there was
no Pirates. How could I know he was saving it for the encore! So, if
you're watching these postings, John, thanks!

Caffe Lena's a special old coffee house that has hosted hundreds of folk
singers and musicians. It only holds about 60 and was full that night. A
local (young) reviewer said the audience was a bit "long in the tooth,"
but hey, we're still here at least!

So, come back John & Dave. Come back during the season (August) when the
flat track is open and ALL the horse people are here! I won't come alone
next time -- I'll bring my friends & we'll fill the place twice!

Hi Nancy of San Jose,
Thanks, I'm looking forward to it too. My husband will be with me and
there should also be Paul who lives somewhere south of us. I believe
Paul has quite a distance to cover to be there.
		See you then. Catherine

In an article I read a couple of years back, Vince Gill mentioned that the first
song he ever recorded was John Stewart's "July You're a Woman" - don't any
more (label, etc.) about it - never heard it...

I think it was John Wilkinson (country singer) who had a minor hit with
"July" around 1970. Issued as a single; got some airplay in L.A.

Also, I hate to try to out-weird anyone, but I know I heard John Davidson
sing "California Bloodlines" at least once on TV, and am afraid he may have
recorded it as well.

My daughter frequently rides in equestrian competitions at the fairgrounds in
Pomona. As I've mentioned here before, it is impossible not to have "Back in
Pomona" playing as mental background music on those weekends.

By the way, I've been to Marshall (Calif.), where the sea begins, several
times, although I understand from Angelbravo that the town (which was only a
few structures to begin with) burned down. Bolinas is not far away, but you
have to know where you're going, since the residents take down the
directional signs periodically. Bolinas Lagoon is magnificent and worth
seeking out.

These places are real, and John's songs capture their essence as well as any
photograph.

I didn't think it could get stranger than John Davidson, but Robert Goulet
tops my story.

(Of course, who can forget Petula Clark's "Wolves in the Kitchen"?)
