Unfortunately, no, Kent. I was so excited just to get a dialogue going with
the guy that I didn't want to wear out my welcome before I even had one, so
I kept it short and sweet.

If I had a magic wand (or a couple of angels at my command) I'd establish a
US tour for Johnny Flamingo and the gang all over the country to promote
Rough Sketches, stopping in each state and picking up stray and wayward
fans along the way. Since I know very little about the music biz, I must do
what I can in my neck of the woods and hope that y'all can do the same.

BTW, how's everyone doing on the JS Tribute Recording? I've finally chosen
my 2 songs, and I've contracted my musicians, but I played my guitar so
long this afternoon that I have huge blisters on my left hand, and I'll not
be able to practice for a couple of days.

I hope y'all are still up for it. Contact Randi on this list for specifics.
Randi, can you copy from a 4-track DAT tape?

Hi bloodliners!

My husband loves "Cody" by JS and has been asking for weeks to find out if
any of you know the origins of the song, e.g., is there a real story behind
it, how was JS inspired to write this song, and just anything anyone knows
about the song's origins.

Also, he wants me to ask why other artists have not recorded JS's songs. I
told him it was because JS's songs are so unique and his style of performing
them is so compelling that it leaves little room for others' interpretation.
<grin> Anyway, if anyone knows of any of JS's songs have been recorded by
others, my husband would like to know. He's just being his curious self.

Thanks.

Subj:	Towne Crier Review
Date:	97-04-21
From:	ddunet@concentric.net (Michelle Stevens)

It seems only fitting that a songwriter who sings so much about the road
would draw fans from so far afield. The concert at the Towne Crier in
Pawling NY last Sunday night had only about 40 in the audience, but many
traveled quite aways to attend. An unscientific query from the stage
revealed that some had come from as far away as Pennsylvania. But that's
rather a normal occurrance at John Stewart concert.

Even at the last stop of a long road trip for John and Dave, they were in
fine form, and this has to be the best concert I've seen of the two of
them. When the sound is right, you know it and it was right that night. The
venue was not packed, and there was a "house concert" type of feel to this
performance. I have never heard the mixing done as well as it was here.
Usually the volume is way too high for me, but this was absolutely perfect.

Also met a Stewartista who is a long time fan, but new this week to
Bloodlines (welcome Stan!) who bought me Pepsi and knew the words to every
song... my kinda guy. One other Bloodlines member evident at the show, but
he was down in front and I never got a chance to find him after the show.

John and Dave played one *awsome* set, two hours of music with *no break*.
True performers all the way.

Johnny Flamingo
Ticket to the Stars
Wingless Angels/Survivors (new version with drum machine and new lyrics)
Black Sky Shining
Irrisitable Targets
Children of the New Frontier (slower than past recordings with a more
steady beat)
Dreamers on the Rise
Cowboy in the Distance
Keeper of the Flame
Strange Rivers
China Sky
CA Bloodlines/The Road/Brcause of a Dancer
Interview With An Angel
July (with audience participation)
Renegade Rising (another new and wonderful song w/drum machine)
Neon Road
Headed Down the Line
Midnight Wind
Dogs of San Jon
Daydream Believer (with audience participation)

Here John switches to the 12 string for:
Chilly Winds
Mother Country
Long Train of Dreams (new)
Shadows of the Angels Winds

The audience was in awe of these two from the start and the show delivered
it's usual bounty of great lyrics, wonderful music and the obvious pleasure
that the performers bring to the stage. Thanks, guys, you did it again!

Karen & Duncan,

F.Y.I. Pat Boone recorded "July Your A Woman" , so did Eddie Arnold. I've
heard tell that Elvis used to sing "July" every night, in his dressing room,
before going on stage! I know of many other songs, but I'll let someone
else do the honors.

                                                          Keep it flyin' ,

Thanks to all of you who have continued to participate in this list. We are
experiencing a huge number of recent subscribers and that is great, but it
also starts to bring up some issues.

We are also experiencing a large number of unsubs. I've been querying those
who have recently unsubscribed and the main complaint is that there are too
many posts in general for them to wade through. (This is understandable,
most people expect 2 or 3 messages a day and we have been going higher than
that for quite a while). Now, I don't want to ask anyone not to post
(that's what we're here for anyway, right?) but I would like to ask that we
keep the "Me too" type posts to a minimum.

Some people find that answering all the days posts with one inclusive post
is more efficient than answering each post separately. It does take a
little extra time to past in the appropriate original text, but I think
we'll have a more efficient list for everyone. Now, for those people who
still think that there are too many posts, well, there might be a digest
version available after we hit 200 or so, but in the meantime, let's keep
the electron's flyin', 'cause that's why I do this!

And finally, I found this floating around in cyberspace and thought it
might be appropriate for this discussion!

Q: How many internet mail list subscribers does it take
     to change a light bulb?

 A: 1,331:
1 to change the light bulb and to post to the mail
list that the light bulb has been changed
14 to share similar experiences of changing light
bulbs and how the light bulb could have been
           changed differently.
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs.
27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about
           changing light bulbs.
53 to flame the spell checkers
156 to write to the list administrator complaining about
the light bulb discussion and its inappropriateness
           to this mail list.
41 to correct spelling in the spelling/grammar flames.
109 to post that this list is not about light bulbs and
to please take this email exchange to alt.lite.bulb
203 to demand that cross posting to alt.grammar,
           alt.spelling and alt.punctuation about changing
           light bulbs be stopped.
111 to defend the posting to this list saying that we
are all use light bulbs and therefore the posts
**are** relevant to this mail list.
306 to debate which method of changing light
bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs,
what brand of light bulbs work best for this
technique, and what brands are faulty.
27 to post URLs where one can see examples of
           different light bulbs
14 to post that the URLs were posted incorrectly, and
           to post corrected URLs.
3 to post about links they found from the URLs that
are relevant to this list which makes light bulbs
           relevant to this list.
33 to concatenate all posts to date, then quote
them including all headers and footers, and then
           add "Me Too."
12 to post to the list that they are unsubscribing
because they cannot handle the light bulb
           controversey.
19 to quote the "Me Too's" to say, "Me Three."
4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ.
1 to propose new alt.change.lite.bulb newsgroup.
47 to say this is just what alt.physic.cold_fusion
was meant for, leave it here.
       143 votes for alt.lite.bulb.

I haven't contacted Spitbucket about this - maybe later.
Has anybody else wondered why we've never seen John on Austin City Limits?
OK so everybody reading this has access to the wierd wide web - ACL has a
site and you can send them comments - in fact, they say they want comments
Get to the site and tell KLRU you want your John Stewart NOW!
This could get John at least one gig in Texas and maybe Spitbucket could build
on it. Come on gang, JS and Darwin's Army on PBS. Think of the great tape.
And the replays during pledge week. Get on your PCs and bombs away
Austin City Limits.

Roy
Other strange ideas to follow.

There's a long list of songs recorded by others. It is just not nearly as
long enough as we might like. Two "prominent" ones are Rosanne Cash's "hit"
version of Runaway Train, and Nanci Griffith accompanied by John on "Sweet
Dreams Will Come" from her Little Love Affairs album. I don't have it handy,
but I'm pretty sure that John Authored "Dance With The Tiger" that Rosanne
Cash has on her Interiors album. John plays some awesome guitar on that cut
as well. Joan Baez has done a respectable version of "Strange Rivers" on her
Play Me Backwards album. Kate Wolf does a superb version of "some Kind of
Love" on her "Give Yourself To Love" album. These all are fairly recent
recordings that you shouldn't have too much trouble finding.

Also out there are songs of John's recorded by the Limeliters (Headin' for
the Hills comes to mind). Belafonte has done Missouri Birds and possibly
another. The We Five did a couple. The White Mountain Singers have done
"Zapatta" and "Wings of St. Michael" on their 1984 album "Sunrise".

On Cody, at a concert I saw about a year or so ago John mentioned that he
wrote Cody after reading Steinbeck's "The Red Pony" so I would say that your
husband should head straight to that master, Steinbeck, to find the
inspiration. With reference to John's (Stewart) book "American Sketches" he
adds that Cody was written one night in Chadds Ford Pennsylvania in 1967 and
it is based on the character of the old man in "The Red Pony".
