This from NanciNet regarding the music Nanci Griffith is having played at her
concerts before the show:
"Nanci's concerts begin before she or her guests take the stage with the tape
she prepares for the auditorium. Here were many of her favourites; Iris
DeMent, Loretta Lynn, John Stewart."

Hi Greg,
If we ever get to see her, maybe we can listen prior to the show. Are we
still set for Saturday morning around the 11:00am time-frame? I will have
all the songs copies that you requested, including "John's Little
Songbook." Do you have the one about Route 66? I can also make copies of
that. I really appreciate you letting me demo the amp Greg! What a cool guy
gesture. We have a gig at the VFW in Kearny Mesa on Friday, April 25th. I'm
thinking of using the amp then. Any problem on that? Please let me know.
Thanks Greg....Merle

you can find it , as well as pictures of available product, at John's

Subj: hello JS world!
Date: 97-04-17
From: linehan@clark.net (Skip Linehan)
Hi, all.
I found and joined this list about a month ago. Only now saying hello, but
I have been reading all your messages.
I have been a fan of JS since the late KT days (my grade school days) and
all the early solo stuff (high school and college). Phoenix Concerts was
one of the most played records during college.
I had lost touch with his work probably around Dream Babies time and
only discovered all the newer stuff about 3-4 years ago. John played
at the Birchmere in VA a couple of times. I think he had just moved to
Virginia. I guess he has now moved back west? By the way, Buffy came up
and sang with him both times I saw him there. One of those times my
sister left her purse and we had to go back after everyone had left.
To make a long story short, my sister, my Dad and I went backstage to
meet JS and Buffy.
They were extremely friendly, but I was tongue-tied. John signed my
CD and was asking me about my job in computers. He was really interested,
but I was too nervous to say anything intelligent. Rats.
I sure wish he would come back here...(DC area)
By the way, I used to have a hobby recording my favorite singers
when they would stop by at local radio stations. They used to do that
a lot in the early 70's. I have a recording of JS from about 1972 from
a visit to a local radio station when he was in town (Washington, DC).
He mentions having just played in Baltimore. Anyway, just for fun
I digitized the songs he played and can contribute them to the cyber-world
if JS consents. They are California Bloodlines (of course), Road Away,
Freeway Pleasure (my favorite), and July You're A Woman.
I can make them available for access through my web page. Just think of it
as a time delay in listening in (of about 25 years). ;-)
(Just think... that broadcast is still propagating out through the
universe, 25 light years away by now.)

Subj: What is a Darwin's Army?
Date: 97-04-17
From: ddunet@concentric.net (Michelle Stevens)
Well Duncan and Karen, you've asked the $64K question! I have been trying
to find the definitive answer to this one since I saw Darwin's Army at the
show in Alexandria. Here's the way *I* see it... (Your mileage may vary)
Darwin's Army is a group. It's not really "John and friends", but a
collaborative effort. It consists of John (usually playing banjo), John
Hoke on rhythm and lead guitart and vocals, Dave Batti on bass, Buffy on
vocals and assorted percussives, and Dennis Kenmore on drums (I'm not sure
if they let him sing or not).
They play traditional folk and folk/rock music, mostly cover tunes, rarely
any of John's original stuff, but great stuff all the same. Dylan, Simon,
Seeger and the like. (Their version "Boy in the Bubble" is phenomenally
tight) My understanding is that there will be a DA CD out something this
year (but don't tell ANYONE I said that, it's just between you and me, OK?,
boy if this leaked to the whole mailing list, I'd be in big trouble.)
Also, for anyone who wants John to come to a specific venue, don't whine
about it here, This is not the place. Whine about it to Steven "SpitBucket"
Gordon who can be "reached" at "GorDoom@aol.com". Post to him a message
with your request for a venue apprearance. I imagine the more work you do
on your end (finding a venue, a date no less than 6 months in the future, a
nice big bribe, you know, that sort of thing) the more likely it will be to
happen. I understand that Saturday night gigs are not SpitBuckets forte.
(But that's another story)
Who else would like to post their impressions of "What is Darwin's Army"?
Not really sincerely,
Your friendly mailing list manager and webmistress Michelle

Hi Kirbys, I can't help you with this Orange County problem, but I can
tell you that some of John's truly devoted fans (such as Paul Burbank
and Lee Bittner) are driving up here from various spots in Southern and
Central California to see him in Capitola next week (April 26). He is
appearing on a Saturday night so you Kirbys could make a romantic
week-end of it. Capitola is a fine place for that sort of escapade.
It's a very pleasant, hilly little village on the ocean. If you cannot
book a room there, you could get one in Santa Cruz which is 10 minutes

Gee, I didn't think I was whining. I was just expressing a wish. But I can
certainly emphathize with Michelle, who has spent the last 3 days in the car
with her kids. When I'm in a situation like that with my children, every
wish, request, or breath sounds like a whine to me.
I will, however, contact Steven. Since I'm not in the music business, I have

This is basically pretty simple. Where in your neck of the woods do
you think is a good place for John Stewart to play? i.e. when you go
see other artists you like, where do you see them? Then it's a
simple matter of :
a.) Write down the phone number and address of the club and e-mail
spitbucket (a.k.a. Steven Gordon and Gordoom@aol.com)
b.) Call / write / petition the club that when a booking agent calls
about John Stewart, if the club books them, you and X many friends
will come. (the bigger a number you can promise, the more likely
the club owner is to be interested - just don't say you'll come with
100 people, and only come with 10. It makes it hard for John to get
booked back when that happens).
It theoretically is then spitbucket's job to make things work out as
far as open dates and other such things.
If you don't know where you would go in your area to see a concert, I
suggest two things
1) If your paper has an "entertainment" section, or better yet, if
your community has an "arts" paper (Chicago has the Reader, New York
The Village Voice, etc.) pick up that and read through it. Look for
names of people like John, Guy Clark, Greg Brown, etc.
2) Browse to http://www.automatrix.com/concerts/com and learn to use
Musi-Cal - an on line calander database that is a wonderful way to
find out who is coming through your neck of the woods when.
Happy hunting.
Sincerely,
Ian

Thanks Ian. You wrote what I hadn't the patience to. I hope Karens doesn't
think I was being flip, it's just that even though we have NO way to
control John's concert schedule through this medium, there is a lot that we

Many thanks, Ian. Great info.
For example, I'm contacting the music critic for one of our local papers to
see just which venue might be the best place for one of John's shows. These
writers are usually pretty accessible, love music and (usually) don't mind
sharing their thoughts, particularly if they're familiar with John's music
already. This not only helps you with your cause but also helps promo John
with local music writers if and when he comes to town and enhances chances
for coverage.

To add my 2-cents worth, I would agree with Michelle's description, and
add that my impression of the choice of name indicates that this group
represents the next step in the "evolution" of popular folk music
(hopefully not the "Missing Link"), according to the group's impression
and interpretation of the direction they would like to see the music go.
I think it's a great concept and a great name that speaks volumes (as
you would expect from JS).

I'll try to follow up on your simple solution (perhaps simple for you, but
not for me). I rather thought that since JS reads bloodlines and posts that
he, Dave, and others might see a need and ask their agent (or whomever) to
look into this.

The fact is I can't bring 100 or 10, but only 2, myself and my husband.
However, I can suggest a couple of clubs and email spitbucket. Perhaps
others in Orange County might be willing to help me with this? What about it?

Hi Lee, yes the Capitola Theatre is almost on the beach and is indeed
in the Village as opposed to the ugly 41st Avenue area of Capitola. I
am attempting to find out what time the doors open and if I am
successful I will share that information with you.The theatre is now
available for concerts and seminars and has been for a few months. It
has been remodeled and has an opera company which performs there
regularly. I do not think movies will be shown at all anymore; the
elderly movie lady who operated the theatre for many years is gone. As
far as the special guests are concerned, well, there's "Dave", he's
pretty special. Then there might be Buffy and Luke and Darwin's Army and
the ghost of Dave Guard. Beyond that I have no guesses. I shall sit here
and visualize Rosanne Cash but I don't know how much good it will do me.
Oh, my husband just returned from the mailbox and handed me a new
corrected postcard announcing the Northern California dates. That's
good, now no one will be confused and there will be no need to blame
that nice Mr. Spitbucket.
Okay, Lee, it's only a week away, shall we synchronize our

"Texas is a problem ... Other than Dallas & Austin it's hard to find gigs &
unfortunately two gigs don"t make a tour ... John has been on me for two
years t' put a Texas tour together ... He sez driving through deep Texas

So lets sock it to him! Any of you guys down in the Texas area look for

venue owners interested. Take your notebook computer and show all the web
