Phil,
That was a great line, but I must say that I liked "I'm a lesbian trapped in
a man's body", better!

Yes, it was a great line, surprised he said it in Northampton, though.
Mission Inn: The Mission Inn was (is?) a very unique hotel in Riverside,
California. My grandfather was trying to sell a piece of land in Riverside
for an estate. He'd have to go out there to show it or whatever and would
take me with him. We'd always stay at the Mission Inn.
Remember this was before Disneyland, before color television, so it was
very interesting stuff to a boy.
It was styled on the outside something like a California Mission, but it
was the inside that I remember. In the basement was a wax museum called the
Catacombs, I believe. The lobby had a Presidential Room which had a huge
chair. It had been made especially for President Taft, our largest
president. He visited Southern California and stayed at the Mission Inn. It
was probably twice the width of a conventional chair.
His visit to the area and to the Mission Inn are well documented in the
movie "Tell Them Willy Boy is Here" starring Robert Blake.
The best rooms were known as Artists Row and they had very tall cathedral
ceilings. We got to stay in one of those rooms once.
There was no television in the lobby, but there was always a huge jig saw
puzzle set out on a table. Again, great fun for a kid.
It also had a pool, which doesn't seem like a big deal now, but it was
quite a thrill for me then. There was also always a beautiful parrot
outside near the pool.
I went there in 75 with a girlfriend and it was closed except for paid
tours, which were not being held that day. But we walked around the outside
and I discovered an open door. So we went inside and I gave her a private
tour.
Great place!

Thanks Roy -
We too are looking forward to working more with John. The next
project (after giving Rough Sketches some proper promotion) is a US
release of Bandera. Regarding the R/S credit to Dave - the credits
are exactly as John told them to me, so . . .
Sincerely,
Ian

Glad to know the Mission Inn is doing well. But since I'm now into downward
social mobility, it's probably out of my price range.
Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention:
There used to be an automobile race track just east of Riverside and the
Mission Inn was "the" place to stay in the track's golden days.
Years later I learned that at night there was a virtual parade of hookers
and groupies roaming the halls!

The Lesbian line was uttered in Cambridge not in Northampton.

Um . . I know I heard it in Northampton 'cause i wasn't in Cambridge. But
more importantly (just because I'm beginning to wonder what this thread
looks like out of context), I'll add that the line was uttered along side a
pretty clear call for tolerance and the wise observation that hate and
violence are a lot more worrisome than any particular form of love. I
believe there was also some discussion of a "July" remake: "Ernie, you're a
woman . . . " (sung, i suppose, by Bert). Now, that one i'd like to hear.

Bob-Since there were so many judges, the competition got a group discount
down to around $80, but the card on the back of the door in my room said
it rented for as much as $250. That's way out of my league too.

Margie, wasn't that a great line? I loved it, too - "I'm a lesbian trapped
inside a man's body." Thanks for that reminder, even though you wrote it to
Phil, cause you don't know me. I was at the Iron Horse, too, though, and glad
someone noted that line of his, it was really funny. KShep87309

To Bob Immler: Yes, it was a little surprising that John made such a
statement in Northampton. It actually looked for a few seconds like he was
surprised that he had said it - but he moved right along... thanks Bob for
that nostalgic picture about the Mission Inn. I was never there (although I
was in Monteray as a child, and my memory flicked on a few of the mental
pictures you evoked, as our relatives took us to some monastery-like
enclosure with a pool, so MAYBE I was there).....but your description made me
feel like I am there now.
Is John going to play there? KShep87309

John,
I saw you perform at the Ice House in the early 70s.
You made some remark about the Catholic church, or catholicism or Catholic
schools. Very funny.
I was there with my former wife and her best friend from high school. At
that time the friend was a Catholic Nun, but her order no longer wore
habits, so she was in "civilian" clothes.
I always thought it would have been interesting if you'd realized there was
a nun in the audience and she was laughing along with the rest of us.

Dear Bob and Friends,
The Mission Inn, in Riverside, has been refurbished and is open for
business. Looks great, and all that history around! (We spend our
honeymoon night in it in December of 1994.)
They have a wonderful Sunday Brunch (Ice Sculptures, et al), but save your
nickels and dimes. Better yet, have a friend take you there as their
guest! (And I am already booked elsewhere for the next 100 Sundays :-)
)
Paul

I judged the wine competition for the Pacific Rim International Wine
competiton last month in San Bernardino. They had all of the judges stay
at the Mission Inn. It was lovely-and a bit of an adventure as each room
is very different. One judge had the room sort of in a tower. Mine was
on the top floor overlooking the pool with this huge skylight. My only
complaint, if you're over six feet, two inches, don't take a room on the
top floor as the beams hang down and will clip the top of your head.
Ouch!

Yes, the Mission Inn has been re-furbished, and is quite quaint. I believe
you can get a room there for about a hundred bucks, but I wouldn't recommend
wandering too far from the hotel at night as you could possibly get mugged.
By the way, the hookers are still in the area, as are the winos and other
derelicts. I know this because I owned a business in downtown Riverside
for many years, and my family still owns some commercial property there.
Also, where the Riverside International Raceway once stood it is now the
Moreno Valley Mall. Yes, it would be cool if John would play at the
Mission Inn sometime. (He never comes to the" Inland Empire.")
Keep it flyin' , MOTT

Dear Margie, just for the record, the remark about being trapped inside a
man's body was apparently said at both Northampton and Cambridge, because I
was only at Northampton, and if I could make up a line like that, maybe I
might try going on stage myself! It was funny enough to use twice, don't you
think? KShep87309

Sorry to keep drifting off topic, but...remember the old "you can't get
there from here joke."
One time at the Mission Inn, my grandfather wanted to take me to some
museum in Riverside. We lift the hotel and asked a young man if he knew
where it was, he said "sure, follow me."
We turned left and walked to the end of the block, turned left and walked
to the end of that block, turned left and walked to the end of that block
(the starting point), and then crossed the street to the museum.

Moreno Valley? Still "jack rabbit pass" to me.
Last time at Riverside for a race I sat in the stands at turn 6, turn 8 was
already gone with a mall in its place.

Del,
Hey, I didn't mean to suggest that anything other than comedy, along with a
plea of tolerence, was involved in the comment in Cambridge...hopefully no
one was offended by the remark, I'm certain that wasn't the intent!
Also thanks for keeping things straight, reading all of the "reports" from
the latest tour has been a wee bit confusing! :~)
