Welcome Fred!
If you happen to bump into the Chaplain, George Geiser, or his wife Judy (who
I believe teaches an art class or two) tell them that Margie said Hi! Judy

I'm not certain if they are "connected" or not.
Thanks and welcome again from one Oh-HI-ohan Stewartista to another!! ( I am

I've heard it said that John "owned Phoenix".....Phoenix Concerts definitely
impressed his brain engrams on the minds of people in THIS state, that's for
sure
I saw 50 people go see him in La Jolla CA and two HUNDRED and FIFTY in
Scottsdale...quite a difference.

Start after the four you mentioned and work your way to 1997...you got a
long way to go, friend...so get going! <BG> OR...you could start with Rough

Hi Mike,
I think it is a regional thing. You're lucky to find a slot for John Stewart
records in most Alabama record stores, much less the actual records. It has
been hard to follow John down here, but I'm ready to start trying again. You
folks have given me faith.

hi merle,
it's difficult, but not too hard. you start in D, then with you're third
finger you go to to the F on the D string, then to the E on the D string,
then to the Eb, and you keep working that over and over thru the verse. The
chours is D to G to Bm to G and walk down to EM and A. Walk back up to D and
start all over again. Atleast that's how I do it. . . . .

Big tornado came through about a week ago (Saturday night?).
Your friends in Soddy are, like ourselves, quite safe, as we're about 30
minutes to the north of the affected area.
About $60M in damages, so far, and that's the conservative estimate. I
haven't heard any loss of life, but the news here just sort of receded after
the event. Except for the ongoing clean-up and recover stories.
The most affected area was East Brainerd, near Hamilton Place Mall, if that
helps you pinpoint it.
Come see your Soddy-Daisy and Chattanooga friends sometime (Riverbend
Festival is a good time) and include us on that list.
Take care.

Subj: Intro from an "Oldest Living Son"
Date: 97-04-04
From: Loboaw@ix.netcom.com (Steve)
Well, a brief intro may be in order. I've been a fan of John's since
the Kingston Trio days. Thought then and think now he's about the best
singer-writer we've had in this country. I like the fact that he's loved
"Mother Country" despite the pain, despite the peer pressure to hate it.
My next younger brother's name is Jim - we were in Vietnam together. As
much as any place, we were pretty much from Ohio. So John's "Oldest
Living Son" was like a hammer in the heart for me. I got a chance to
tell John about it at a writing workshop he did out here in PA a few
years ago. His breath caught when he thought Jim didn't make it back,
but we both did, with all our fingers and toes and most of our hearts
and souls. I took "good care of him," I told John.
My wife and her songwriting partner met at the workshop - John was
blown away by a short fragment of lyric she did. They're still at it and
even I've chipped in a few songs, though my field is poetry.
We saw John last year at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia and he invited
us into his dressing room after the show. Jean gave him a sculpture she
did (her real job is being a potter) and he seemed delighted with it.
All this is roundabout. What I wanted to say was in the dark years
after the war, when I felt like an outlaw in my own land, Stewart's
music was one of the threads which held me here, helped me keep the
faith that eventually "Mother Country" would remember her "oldest living
sons (and daughters)". He helped me come home.
BTW, the workshop was great. Since then I've finished two books of
poetry, am 2/3 through another, finished a novel, and have begun three
others. No, nothing's published yet, but that's not the point.

Subj: re: where to start listening again
Date: 97-04-04
From: cwoodward@ucflink.com (Charlie Woodward)
Everyone has given great suggestions on where to dive
into John's releases that you've missed.
I think I would take it chronologically. One of the things that
has always drawn me back to John's music is that he never
lets himself get stale. He's constantly evolving and trying new
things while maintaining his basic formula.
If you listen to the tapes/cds in the order they were released
you will get a sense of that evolution ( small plug for Darwin's
Army! ) that you'll miss if you skip around.
That's what I really like about secret tapes--we get an insight
into how John develops his songs. One of the latest examples
is "Interview With An Angel." You think it's a great song in its
original arrangement, and then you hear the version on the CD
with Buffy--amazing! I'm looking forward to the folk opera with
great anticipation.
You all have a great time at McCabe's and the other shows coming
up. I hope John can work out something in the southeast soon.

OK...Michelle asked for an intro so here it is....
I'm a fourth year Ph.D. student at the University of Utah, in Salt
Lake City. Took time out from studying for comprehensive exams to go
to the conert here Saturday night and it was excellent! Salt Lake
City seems to get bypassed by a lot of concerts too.
I realized yesterday, when I sent this note to Michelle
that I sound like this is the only thing I do....WRONG. So to set the
record straight I'd like to say that, in another life (and hopefully
again someday) I was a terrific stagemanager. I lived on a 45 foot
sailboat for several years and so got into yacht refinishing as well.
I also play the bagpipes and once restored an antique merry-go-round.
I lived in LA for several years, and did the McCabes flyer run there
in the early 80's. This was a nifty little job that got me two free
tickets to every concert at McCabes that I wanted to go to. Anyone
familiar with McCabes will understand when I say that this was an
opportunity to expand my musical horizons and to give me very
eclectic tastes in music.
Everyone seems to be able to remember the exact moment they
discovered John Stewart. I have to say that it seems John has always
been around for me...I just can't remember when he wasn't part of my
"musical consciousness".
I'm actually from Seattle and I'm wicked homesick down here, so let
me hear from you guys up there, OK?

George...
You think it's tough in Alabama...you should live in Salt Lake City
(the land of top 40), where anything shown on public tv or played on
public radio is "Alternative". Meaning it's sold "someplace else" I
suppose. This includes John...but also Richard Thompson, Fairport
Convention, Steeleye Span, Bonnie Rideout, Greg Brown, etc,etc,etc......
HOWEVER... there is one cd store here that orders and is
into customer service, and mail-order is great for filling in the
gaps.

I would welcome any effort at a JS songbook and would contribute however I
could to one. As someone else suggested, I think anything organized to the
point of printing, distribution and sale should include a cut for John. In
the meantime, I have pretty good tablature on Freeway Pleasure; Bolinas; and
Last Hurrah.

Dear Bloodliners,
I just wanted to clear something up concerning the songbook idea. I posted
this hoping that maybe Angelbravo would be interested in publishing such a
collection if there was enough interest generated. I don't wish to suggest
that anything occur which would infringe on any copyright or publishing
restrictions.

Thank's for making Reservations for us at Earth, Wind & Flour for Saturday.
There's just one minor problem; you forgot to mention what time. If I
recall correctly we agreed to meet there at 5:00 PM. The reason for the
early dinner is so we can line up in time to get GOOD seats. By the way, I
plan to swing by Mc C's about 4:30 to see if anyone else wants to join us.
Of course I'll invite John & Dave if I run into them. See you all there,

Date: 97-04-04
From: delausa@mailbox.syr.edu (Del Lausa)
Actually, it's spring--and a beautiful, fine one here in central NY. I
don't mean for it to be a ritual, but every year for many years now, it is
just this sort of first golden spring day that brings out the Dream Babies
albums, along with Blondes and Budgies. My own joyful celebration of
spring, and a cleansing of the collected little depressions and grey
thoughts of winter. A renewal in multiple ways, since it was Dream Babies
that first made me aware of John Stewart's great gift. And an opportunity
to reflect on all those who have shared its appreciation with me over the
years. I suppose it would be an overstatement to credit John for spring
itself, but there is a sublime joy in his music that amplifies this fine
feeling of seeing everything crisp and clean in a new light, tingling
anticipation, and dripping golden sun--when you breathe deeply, as one, the
sweet air and the colors and the music. This lovely day is a better one for
John's music: more joyful, more electric, more sublime, more golden. Is
there anything more valuable that one person could give another? I'm
afraid that "Thanks, John" is all I can give in return.

I didn't have the guts to present my stuff, It was just additional verses

I paint. I don't write music. And you're right (write) he opened up some
