Subj:	Introduction
Date:	97-04-03
From:	kkirby@venus.superstore.com (Karen Kirby)

Hi,

I had no idea that a John Stewart mailing list would be this active. I'm a
long-time member of the Internet (and before that arpanet, since I'm a
computer scientist) and have subscribed to many mailing lists.

Well, I just want to let you know why I'm here. I met my current husband,
Duncan, in Dec.'92 (while going through a divorce) and he's been a John
Stewart fan since the late 60's. Then in Feb. '93, Dunc actually gave up
playing golf in team play to take me for a weekend in La Jolla, so his golf
team buddies knew he was really serious. On the drive, I heard for the first
time John Stewart (old tape of California Bloodlines). I immediately fell in
love with him (Dunc, John Stewart, both). When "Ruby, you're a woman"
played, Duncan actually drove off to the side of the road to show me what he
meant. How's that for an introduction to John!

I've always been a folk music fan from the PP&M days. So, I was a very
willing inductee for Dunc to help me know John Stewart. After my divorce in
Dec. 93, Dunc and I married in Jan.'94, and since and before we've been
trying to collect all of John's music on CDs. While Dunc's not a computer
person, he bugs me daily on my progress with this list.

I guess more than anything, we'd really like to go to a John Stewart
concert, if John does these anymore. We've been to Kingston Trio concerts
lately where they do a few of John's songs. But I've never heard a more
soulful folk singer than John Stewart. The Pirates song from Bloodlines
absolutely makes me get goose bumps. I love his voice! If anyone knows if
John is still doing any concerts anywhere, please let me know!!!!

Dunc sends his good wishes to all of you. Me too.

Karen

(Only kidding, Karen, welcome to the list). I *think* John still does
concerts... (ahem)

Welcome, Karen, Dennis, Tom and everyone else who just joined! The more is
definitely the merrier, in this case.
And maybe if we lobby ... really hard ... Dennis, we could encourage John
and his entourage to swing through the midwest, by way of Minnesota and then
to Missouri ... or vice-versa ... whatever works. (Sorry, but obviously,
trying to bring him back to this part of the heartland is of MAJOR interest
to me and other local Stewartistas! 'Least, I know of one other fellow
afficianado in my office.)
Michelle, such a thing you've started here!

Kent,

I'd definitely be for that. Perhaps the Midwest faction should all pull
together to get John and his entourage to swing through this area with a
tour. A little Omaha Rainbow looks nice after a Kansas Rain and makes the
Missouri Birds sing. What happened to Minnesota??

Hi Bob,
I believe I have an extra copy. It seems that quite a few people played
along with "Chilly Winds"...I was no exception. While my buddies were
playing along to "Play Guitar with the Ventures" (gag), I put "Chilly
Winds" on the turntable with a microphone & a tape recorder about 6 feet
away from the speakers. I Then stood about 2 feet back of the mike and did
the vocal while finger picking an acoustic guitar. It took a few times to
get the balance right, but the result was very cool. (OK...it WAS then!) I
haven't thought about that in a long time, and last night, tried to locate
that tape....I know its in one of those boxes marked old tapes. Thanks for
bringing back some memories!!

Hello hello hello all recent arrivals! I just love reading everyone's "how I
found John Stewart" stories. Like religious conversion, or the first sexual
experience, but more fun to share with a group :-)

Kent, Dennis,
to set your fevered minds at rest, some of us Midwesterners have been hard at the
campaign for a while. See, I went to school in St Paul, and have an "in" at a venue in
Mpls. I've been hassling my "in" and GorDoom to get it together, and have high hopes
that they will -- the "in" is also a lifelong JS fan. Kent, do you know anyone at a joint in
St. Louis? I've been dreaming of following John & Dave through a circuit of St
Louis-Chicago-Mpls, and bringing along as many friends as I can. (Funny, I was never
attracted to the following-the-Grateful-Dead thing. Maybe it was too popular. Anyway,
all the folks I knew who did it were vacuous posers, not fine minds like the Stewartistas...)

looking forward to summer,

Jane in Chgo

Thanks, and , as always......... Keep it flyin' , Mott

Wow, this is great! When I joined this newsgroup, I thought I'd find four or
five people, but No-o-o-o-o! It's great to know there are so many faithful
listeners to John's music. Here in Alabama, I only know of two or three
people who even know who he is, and most of them have been introduced by me.

My first meeting with JS's tunes was when I saw him on, I believe, the Joey
Bishop show, singing Armstrong. I immediately went in search of the record
and any albums by him. First, I found a 45 rpm of Armstrong b/w Anna on a
Memory, then I found California Bloodlines and Williard. I was a devoted fan
and player of his tunes from that day until this.

An interesting story about that first copy of California Bloodlines. I was
living in the early 70s in a friends rather rundown apartment in a bad part
of Birmingham. This friend had a friend who was a prostitute and a junkie,
and she masterminded a heist of all my records and my friends stereo. It
took a while, but we eventually found the person who bought the records (I
probably had a 100 or so at the time) and got most of them back. Most were
in great condition, but Bloodlines had been scratched all to hell and back,
and was almost unplayable. I don't know if they liked it and played it a
whole lot, or if they ate pie off of it. I hope it was the former.

On the thought of "telling John you like him", I'd just like to say that
"Some Lonesome Picker" was always been a song of great inspiration to me and
has kept me writin' and singin' songs when most people thought I oughta hang
it up and get a real job. Thanks John, I'm one "lonesome picker" who's
"found some healing in this song".

Oh yes, since I have heard nothing of John's work since "Dream Babies", I
would like suggestions from the group, to your favorites since that one. My
favorites have always been 1) Calf Bloodlines 2)Lonesome Picker Rides Again
3)Wingless Angels & 4)Willard. I'd like to know where to start on the newer
stuff.

To GeoScher

Where do you even start with John's stuff since Dream Babies? There is
so much to choose from, and not a slack effort in the group.

I would have to say start with his reunion with Nick Reynolds REVENGE OF
THE BUDGIE...it has the original version of "Dreamers On The Rise" which
is my all-time favorite from John.

You should also hunt SECRET TAPES I for "The River", his latest ROUGH
SKETCHES which brings the old Route 66 to life in song...

and his two most recent live albums, BANDERA and John and Buffy's TURF
INN give a great representation of his material from the past few years.

Many of these can be ordered through John's Homecoming Records or from
Folk Era Records...if you need information on them you can e-mail me.

Good to see another southeastern bloodliner!

Steve

Take out a small loan and buy it all!! Seriously, there is so much great
stuff since Dream Babies...I mean "Last Campaign", "Essential J+B",
"Blondes","Deep in the Neon" "Secret Tapes" "Teresa & Lost Songs" ....it's
all fantastic. By the way, if you have the chords for "Some lonsome
picker" ...I would love a copy!!

Dear Bloodliners:

Every so often I see a posting mentioning "getting the right chords to a JS
song". I find myself trying to figure the "right chords" far to often, so I
really think it is time that someone publish a definitive John Stewart
songbook. I know JS published one with some of his most popular tunes
awhile back, but I want more! Any Ideas?

From:	battery@teleport.com (Battery Express!)

I just got my copy of Rough Scetches a couple of days ago and if it were
vinyl it would be well worn already. Although I think my favorite JS
sound still comes from Bandera, John has found a new level of expression
with Rough Scetches. None of John's music (or any other music) has
painted such vivid pictures in my imagination. I can really feel and see
Route 66 even though I'm sure I've never been there. This is High-end
art, folks! Something that has struck me in reading the new intro's is
how many people lost John's music years ago and have wondered what
happend to him and does he still perform? This baffles me. Maybe it's a
regional thing but here in Portland OR John's music has been at hand all
along. I remeber Trancas getting air play here. Maybe Portland just
supports folk music well. It's a real hot bed right now. Any idea's?

Well Luke, I gotta tell 'ya that it has been such a pleasure for me (a lot
of work, but still a pleasure) to make contact with and fascilitate contact
between all the Stewartistas. I have made some good friends (even met a few
of 'em) and I must say that they are *the* nicest bunch of people!

I must also thank everyone on this list for minding their manners, too. If
any of you are on other mailing lists, you know that there can be flame
wars galore and I have been so impressed with the way y'all have stayed on
the subject and played well with others.

After the last few posts, I can't think of anything more fun that to sit
around with the Minnesota contingent and watch the Fargo video! Except of
course, sit around with them listening to a John Stewart concert!

At any rate, I am happy to be at your service, I appreciate everyone's
participation (ahem, "Dave", have we received *your* intro yet?) John has
been quite gracious in answering some of the questions that only he can
answer. My hope is that he realizes what a great group of people his fans
are!
