Subj: Rough Sketches CD arrives
Date: 97-04-01
From: donfish@sttl.uswest.net (D&L Ruiz/Peeveyroo)
Got my ``Rough Sketches'' CD in the mail today, and it's clealy a case of
turning a good cassette into an even better CD.
I like the JS artwork on the CD packaging. I also like JS's little essay inside
explaining his take on the songs. And of course, I'm real happy that a
lyric sheet is included.
Also appreciated the added song. ``Spirit of the Road'' fits the spirit of
the disc as if it belonged there all the time.
And I think this CD includes what will come to be thought of as the
definitive version of ``Interview with an Angel.'' Buffy taking the angel's
lyrics feels right, and the song seems a little less spoken and a little
more tuneful, with an almost calypso beat. I really liked it.
Thanks and congratulations to Folk Era, and of course, to John.

Subj: Intro from roads and hills of Oh-HI-oh
Date: 97-04-01
From: fendres@arcrs1.saed.kent.edu (Fred Endres)
Hello Bloodliners:
Greetings from the roads and hills of "Oh-HI-oh."
Unlike you, until recently I didnt know John Stewart was not only alive
and well, but had continued writing and performing after 1967. The Trio,
as I knew it, was breaking up, I was getting out of college, and life had
to go on.
Well, 29 years later--spring of 96 to be precise--I discovered that JS was
not dead; indeed, he was scheduled to come to Kent State University, where
Ive been teaching for more than 20 years. A retired faculty member (and
true Bloodliner), Pete Crossland, had arranged for JS to be a Guest Artist
during University Honors Week. Now, remember this is coming from a person
who hadnt heard Johns unique voice for almost 30 years. Crossland gave me
a tape of California Bloodlines and Punch the Big Guy. Lord, I almost lost
it when that incredible voice rolled out of the speakers. I was 52 years
old, quickly going on 21.
To make a far-too-long story shorter, John appeared before a large number
of classes, visited the May 4, 1970 memorial on campus, did a sing-along
and then a talk/perform presentation during the two days he was on campus.
I arranged for him to share his Route 66 photos with one of our photography
classes, and then he did a mini-press conference for some 19-year-olds who
didnt have the good sense to appreciate who they were listening to.
(Actually, there were 2 converts, now loyal Stewartistas.) I asked John to
sign two of the KT album covers Id brought in, didnt have the good sense
to think to have a picture taken with him (duh!), and then took my
8-year-old son to hear him perform the next night.
(JS, do you remember any of this?)
I do have one question. Ive now got probably 10 of Johns Cds, including
Chilly Winds. But, has John ever re-recorded Take Her Out of Pity or
Ballad of a Quiet Fighter (I think thats the right title)? If so, what
album are they on? If not, why not!?
Peace to all.

From: ddunet@concentric.net (Michelle Stevens)
Just a note from your friendly mailing list manager and webmistress,
Michelle:
Wow, What a great message from Fred, one of our newest Bloodlines members.
It sure is nice to hear these stories of people rediscovering John and his
music after periods of absence. I can only imagine the mixed feelings to
find out a) that you missed a lot of concert opportunities, but b) the
treasure trove of recording that's been goin' on! And how fortunate for us
that it continues...
Welcome, Fred (and Karen and Kevin and Lee) and the other 20 of you or so
who have joined in the last two weeks!
And finally, here is this month's "from out of nowhere award" winner post
that came through my "in basket". (He gave me his "snail-mail" address to
reply to. Too cute!) Enjoy.

Hi...I was beginning to wonder if I was the only J.S. fan out here! Well,
I'm probably one of the few 25 year-olds who even knows who John Stewart
is! Anyway, thank you for your outstanding web page. I'm really new to
the Internet (I don't even have a computer..the store I work at sells
computers so I'm using one of the displays.) I have been a fan of John's
since I was about 3 or 4 years old. Seeing so much of his old recordings
reissued on CD has been wonderful. I'm very happy to see that so many
other people love John and his music...I've always felt it a great
injustice that he hasn't had more mainstream exposure. I would really
like to know how to write or contact John and tell him how much his music
means to me & inspires me (I am a musician/songwriter too)

Oops, after checking the records, Fred from Oh-HI-oh is not, in fact, our
newest Bloodlines member. Sorry, wrong Fred. Maybe our new Fred will send
us his story soon.

Subj: Tell John You Like Him
Date: 97-04-01
From: sprest02@sprynet.com (ALLMuse)
Hi Bloodliners
Just a thought or two. While surfing through the net checking on some of
my favorites, I came across the news that Carl Wilson (of the Beach
Boys) is suffering from cancer. It of course seems to come from out of
the blue and gives one cause for pause.
It reminds of ten years ago last month when my father died of the same
things (lung cancer with spread to the brain). How quick life can be
taken away from us and how we generally don't take time to stop and
enjoy it and those around us.
Not trying to be morbid here, but when people who are only 50 or so
start falling from disease, and sudden at that, it makes you want to
reach out and tell those who you admire that you do.
So the next time you go to one of John's concerts, take the time to
track him down (he's almost always somewhere just before or after a
show) and let him know. You never know when you might never have the
chance to tell him how much Dreamers On The Rise has meant...or that his
newest music touches you deep.
Matter of fact...tell anyone you love that you love em...and keep the
negatives to a minimum...it'll lower your blood pressure.
And a special to MBUtters...heard about Chattanooga over the
weekend...hope you're doing ok
Take care all
Steve

Hello Steve,
Carl Wilson is a friend of mine, though I haven't seen him for a couple
years. I didn't know about his cancer. Thank you for the information. And
thanks for the heartfelt suggestions and reminders below too.

Thanks, Steve, and how right you are. My own father's sudden death 12 years
ago was like a head-on collision with mortality, too. But it really focused
my life up to and after that in ways I can't describe.
As you said, live life as it comes, a step at a time ... as our man wrote:
"Today's so soon tomorrow ... and then you're old."
Guess that's part of the reason we're all drawn to this web space ... and
thank you, Michelle, for your spirit in keeping this flyin' ... that it
gives us a chance to connect with our favorite songcrafter, a chance to
recharge, so to speak.
Hmmmm ... hokay ... enough introspection. Anyone wanna perk things up a bit?

Kent

Subj: Hello Bloodliners

From: tburke1@CCGATE.HAC.COM
Hello Michele and other Bloodliners,
I signed on last week after discovering John on the web. I live in Southern
California and, as a kid, I was a huge fan of the trio, particularly after John
became a part of that great group. (Does anyone else remember an all-
instrumental album by the trio called something like "Learn to Play Guitar
with the Kingston Trio?" I learned my first chords playing along with 'Chilly
Winds,' etc.) I remember seeing the trio at Melodyland in Anaheim, probably
1965 or 66.
Later, after a tour in Vietnam, I rediscovered John while in college. I still
consider "California Bloodlines" one of the two greatest albums I've ever
owned (the other is Van Morrison's "Moondance.") I also saw John, among
other places, at the old Golden Bear in Huntington Beach and even the Japanese
Deer Park in Buena Park (I wonder if he remembers that gig!) where I had a chance
to speak with him before his show. (I'm sure most of the tourists at that long-gone
amusement park had no idea who he was - but I recall they loved the show!)
John's albums and live performances have always struck a deep chord in me -
his true patriotism and love of country in stark contrast to all the self-serving
buffoons claiming to speak for America. I bought all of his albums up to
"Bombs Away Dream Babies" or "Blondes" (I'm not sure which was the later release).
Somehow or other with all the changes going on in my life at that time I lost
track of the Old Lonesome Picker. I still played his music, and looked for new
releases in the stores, but he kind of disappeared from view. Until last week,
that is. I'm so happy to have found him again. I am trying very hard to make
it to McCabe's on Saturday, but if I don't, I'll be there in spirit, and thanks
to this site, I'll know where to be in the future.
Thanks for keeping the flame burning.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for reminding me of the Trio's instrumental album. Boy, did I play
the grooves off of that one. It came at exactly the right time to help me
make guitar playing a part of my life. Still is today. John, I too have
found the delights of Taylors and got a 710 about a year ago.
Strange thing about that album which I seem to remember reading is
that none of the Trio members played on it. Nice photos on the front but
inside, studio musicians. Did I dream this??
Anyway, it didn't matter to me at the time because I could hear the
Trio in my mind and the chords were ones I could master.
Been trying to play John's stuff for my own pleasure ever since.
Was very proud of my version of Willard, a real knuckle buster. I think I
saw John comment here recently that he played it in another tuning. Oh well.
Thanks Michelle for this great list.

Hi
No you didn't dream it...The Trio did not play at all on the
instrumental. I have it too...and learned to play Chilly Winds from that
album. Cool memories.

Hi Tom, and welcome to Bloodlines. I too saw John at The Golden Bear in
about 71, and again in about '83 just before it closed up. I remember lots
of great concerts at the Bear, including, Hoyt Axton, The Byrds, Linda
Ronstadt (Her backup group at the time was the Eagles), Jose Feliciano, and
Tim Morgan, just to name a few. I was also at the KT Farewell concert at
Melodyland in '66. Great memories. Hey, if you make it to Mc Cabes on
Sat. ( I understand the first show is sold out, but call them about the 10:30
show) please come join us at Earth , Wind & Flour, a pizza joint on Wilshire
between 22'nd & 23'rd at 5:00 pm, for fun and pizza.
Keep it flyin'

Hi Tom,
You expressed it most eloquently. I too am new to Bloodlines, after
finding it on the net I was elated at rediscovering John. I immediately
rummaged through the old boxes and found some tapes of Phoenix Concerts,
Willard, etc. With moving, kids leaving and a divorce the bulk of them had
disappeared over time and I had lost contact with an extremely important
point and influence in my life. It is truly rewarding to hear so many
wonderful comments concerning John and to renew a friendship with his
music. Saw John back in 63 in San Francisco performing with KT, then
really got turned on to the Signals through the Glass album in 69, and have
been an ardent fan ever since.
A truly great artist never gets old.
Lets get a concert in Minnesota, yes we still have snow but some hot pickin
will melt it.

The album, "Sing a Song with the Kingston Trio," featured Frank Hamilton on
all instruments. At one time, I believe, he played with the Weavers. I
think he was their last banjo player, after Pete Seeger (the man!) and Erik
Darling. Somehow, it's the only "Trio" album that got lost in my many moves
over the years.

P.S. I'm jealous of all of you going to McCabe's!! We want a full report on
