Which is the only part of the survey that I can answer for = now.... But I want to share this.......on my way downtown this morning to a = CodePink peace action, I was feeling quite overwhelmed, depressed, = generally sh---ty. Maybe it's being in Washington where we get inundated = with depressing news by the minute - but I am totally blown by the lack = of outrage as we prepare to go to war with the seeming inevitability of = a nuclear conflagation somewhere on this planet - perhaps started by us. = (Where is Bobby Kennedy when we really need him?) My self-imposed = efforts to try to stop what is, to my mind, Bush's Folly, seems so = futile.=20 Of course, my fragile emotional state was probably enhanced by too much = New Year's Eve and getting maybe two hours of sleep. I popped in a John Stewart live concert CD that was gifted to me for the = holidays (thanks, Sailor!). What a change of mood! I heard some songs = for the first time (I am a relative newbie) along with the banter and = laughter with the audience. John's songs - this is not news to you = liners - run the gamut of the fabric of life in America. He chastises = what is wrong and celebrates what is right - with a healthy dose of = humor in between. And along the way we get lessons in history, = geography, politics, justice - well, whatever he wants to expound upon = or funny stories he decides to tell. I was a lot cheerier by the time I walked in to the event. I had figured = out what was really wrong with me - I NEED A FIX - a Johnny Stew = concert. Us east coasters are going through withdrawal. Any salvation in = sight??? In addition to music and concerts, I wish for all of you years of health = and joy. Peace, Salaam, Shalom Bonnie ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: bloodlines digest #525 - 12/31/02 From: Date: Thu, 2 Jan 2003 00:24:57 EST Hi Bloodliners, It seems like a long time, too long, since J.S. has issued an album of all new material. When I got aboard the JS bandwagon about 15 years ago I got in the habit of looking forward to a new studio album every year or two. Does anyone know if John has anything on the horizon? I know J.S and his family have had some rocky roads to travel in recent years but I hope the river of music will continue to flow. Happy New Year to All, Bob ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Happy New Year From: "Jane Titus" Date: Thu, 2 Jan 2003 18:12:14 -0500 Hi to all- As I move into my second year as a member of this wild and wonderful group, I wish everyone a year of personal growth and one that will bring closer to true peace of soul. With all the uncertainty in the world, the only thing we can truly hang onto is spiritual peace. So I wish that to you all. I look forward every day to reading my digest with that first cup of coffee. Hope that I will meet some of you when John comes east again. Life after the Fantasy Camps has not been easy for the Singing Animals. The Penguin has been in drug-rehab since just after Thanksgiving. Anxiety from seeing his wattled brethren carved up is the word on the street. The Chicken met his fate trying to cross the road in Scottsdale just after the Camp. I guess he just needed to see what was on the other side. And he did. The Duo of the Bluegrass picking whatever they were's, however are booked to open for John at Anderson's in June. They have done very well for themselves since taking Lordfrench as their manager. I hear that Mr. Stewart is already working on something as controversial and cutting edge for this year's Camp. pr ryboltcox@earthlink.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Survey From: Date: Thu, 2 Jan 2003 10:30:45 EST THE JS ALBUM I LISTENED TO MOST THIS YEAR: Punch the Big Guy NON-JS ALBUM I LISTENED TO MOST THIS YEAR: Brian Wilson's Imagination and Loudon Wainwright's Last Man on Earth PRE-1990 JS ALBUM LISTENED TO MOST THIS YEAR: Punch the Big Guy FAVORITE JS SONG I HEARD FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR: A Walk on the Moon BEST JS/NON-JS CONCERT ATTENDED THIS YEAR: Gamblefest - Dwight Yoakum FAVORITE BOOK READ THIS YEAR: Justice: Crimes, Trials and Punishments by Dominick Dunne The Plague by Albert Camus FAVORITE MOVIE SEEN THIS YEAR: Sunshine State DREAM NEW YEAR'S EVE CONCERT (two opening acts and one headliner): Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, George Carlin and Tony Bennett ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Steven D Alert From: Date: Thu, 2 Jan 2003 13:03:46 EST Dear Bloodliners: I am selling some KT stuff and wanted you to have first the first crack at it before it goes on to e-bay. Makes me want to pull out that old vinyl. Really liked "Just dropped in". Their second album (called Second) had some great tunes. The female lead ( of course the group is known because of some Rogers guy) really had a great voice. Can;t recall her name but is was sort of Native American. I think she was not on the first album...sort of like the disappearing WE Five singer..or maybe it was just a studio band for one of the albums. Didn;t do the survey and don;t know much about the newer stuff but to me Cannons is the best studio and Phoenix the ultimate. my best john parisi johnparisi@iveryanddudley.com -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: re: mike settle From: "Tim Riley" Date: Thu, 2 Jan 2003 14:01:48 -0500 >The female lead ( of course the group is known because of some Rogers guy) >really had a great voice. Thelma Camacho (sp?) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: re: mike settle From: "PC Fields" Date: Thu, 2 Jan 2003 13:15:46 -0800 (PST) Jerry Kergan's site has a very Trio-centric page on Mike Settle: http://users2.ev1.net/~smyth/linernotes/personel/Settle.htm I'll also note that Larry Cansler (from John's "Runner" project) worked with a later edition of Kenny Rogers' group, after Kin Vassy had replaced Mike Settle. And, that the following bio on Kin Vassy from All Music Guide is funky: One of the most successful and enduring talents to come out of the Back Porch Majority, Charles Kindred Vassy later sang on records with Elvis Presley and on several of Frank Zappa's recordings. He was a successful songwriter as well. A graduate of Auburn University in Alabama, Vassy became a folk singer in Phoenix, AZ. After making his name in local coffeehouses as a singer and instrumentalist, he was hired by Randy Sparks for the Back Porch Majority. In addition to performances with Zappa on stage in the early '70s, he worked with Elvis Presley as a vocalist. He was also a songwriter, with one of his compositions, "My First Night Alone Without You," being recorded by Bonnie Raitt on her album Home Plate in 1975. He was also mentioned by name in John Stewart's song "Gold." Two of his own singles reached the top 40 on the country charts, and he was well known in Nashville. Vassy downplayed his association with Zappa, owing to his conservative deep south family background. HUH!!! Obviously the All Music Guide has there info mixed up again. Whoever wrote this must have mistaken the line: "Oh, my buddy Tim Bass he's working pumping gas" They must think the line is: "Oh, my buddy Kin Vassy he's working pumping gas" Nice try. From: "Jeff Tarry" Date: Fri, 03 Jan 2003 10:14:41 +1000 Sheeeesh . . . the line-up for that doo-wop fest has me droolin' and longin' to get my oldies-but-goldies outta storage . . . the Capris, Maurice Williams, the Penguins, the Elegants, the Diamonds and even dear ol' Rosie (who fronted the Originals . . . "Angel Baby", in all its simplicity, still drips magic for me). Missin' from the line-up, though, are the purveyors of two real special doo-wop classics - the Silhouettes ("Get A Job") and Dion and the Belmonts ("I Wonder Why"). Do these guys still earn a decent crust from gigging? Tracking down many of the old soul acts years ago, I found so many wonderful performers working as grease monkeys, waitresses and suchlike - many of them having been ripped off of their financial dues from past glories. I recall that Sugar Pie Desanto, f'rinstance, was working at the San Francisco post office at that time. Others, of course, managed to sustain careers from the impetus of one or two hit singles. At the same venue as the doo-wop fest, I noticed a date for the Elvis show fronted by his old band. Do guys like James Burton, Glen D. Hardin et al still go out with this package? I met John and Buffy when they lived in Charlottesville, VA. At the time, I ran an art store and they would come into the store for supplies and I framed a number of pieces for John. I have gotten online a couple of time over the past couple of years to see what John has been up to and decided this time I would join the list. You can put me on the regular list, I don't care how many emails I get. Here at school, I now teach computer aided drafting instead of being in retail, we have very fast internet access. Thanks for the invite to the list and I look forward to reading what is going on. From: "Tim Riley" Date: Thu, 2 Jan 2003 20:23:53 -0500 You can welcome Jean backchannel at jean.merl@latimes.com. Here is Jean's intro . . . I guess you could call me a Stewartista Interrupted. I was a diehard John Stewart fan in the late 60's and early-to-mid-70's--went to all the local concerts, bought all the albums, etc. Then life happened (marriage, career, twins) and I kinda faded away (but still listened to the music and kept up as best I could.) In December, my sister surprised me with tickets to John's show at McCabe's in Santa Monica. WOW!!! It was like I'd never been away! Marriage is over, twins are away at college, but John Stewart rocks on!! So I bought some more music, found all the websites and got myself up to speed. Now I wanna be a Bloodliner, PLEASE! Thanks for helping me find my way back! Jeanie Merl PS: I was sorry to learn John and his family have had so many trials these last couple of years, including the recent death of his brother. (I believe I may have seen Michael perform with John at the Troubador in LA many years ago.) I do hope Buffy/ Angel Rain is feeling much better now. I add my prayers and good wishes to all of yours! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- End of bloodlines digest
