Several years ago, I was watching a program on the Arts & Entertainment
Network, "Live at the Improve." John Stewart was the musical guest.
He had a full band and did a rocking "American Way." I had the "Trancas"
album and was really into how different the song was from the slow
version that I was familiar with. Enjoyed the upbeat version, also.

And then there was a post on the list or the board (?) about a mail
campaign for an A&E John Stewart/Kingston Trio Biography. Another excellent
idea.

I guess we're becoming an activist organization.

Stewartistas-
Today I received the "Collectors' Choice Music Catalog". Un huh, I thought.
Sure, but I bet you don't have...
WOW! He's in the Artist Index. Yes, wait, look again, yes it's John, not
Rod, not Al, YES!

They call themselvs "America's #1 Authority on Popular & Hard to Find
Music". Well they have one JS title: "American Journey", the 3 CD boxed
set. Good for them. AND...
They have THE WE FIVE: You Were On My Mind/Make Someone Happy. The
discription says, "We couldn't stand seeing our customers special-ordering
these albums from Japan at $40 a pop..."

Now, for the question. Is it better to buy from this catalog in hopes that
they will carry *more* of John's stuff and expose *more* of his work to
*more* people, or continue to buy from Homecoming and know that John reaps
more reward for his wonderful work in the short run? There must be some way
of encouraging a slick catalog like this to carry more of his stuff.

All you record industry moduls out there... whadya think? I thought of
writing them (the catalog) a letter saying that I already have the set, but
thank you for carrying it... would that do any good? Couldn't hurt!

BTW for those of you who like *other* music in addition to John Stewart the
address is:
Collectors' Choice Music
PO Box 838
Itasca, IL 60143-0838

Yes. I got this, too. I always liked them. Took me many years to realize
that it was not THE WEE FIVE (very very tiny musicians), and many more
years to discover the Stewart connection. What I wondered is whether the
guys get any royalties form this re-issue? I mean the price is right, but
I'm wondering which issue the artists have a greater interst in. Anybody
know? Dave? John?

From the shameless plug for Dave Batti Department:

I had the genuine pleasure of catching Dave "blistering fingers" Batti,
Dennis "Son House Roar" Kenmore and John "buried in the mix" Hoke fronted by
blues guitarist Bill Lynch in San Francisco last night (Saturday). Dave's
been keeping a secret, and all those Southern Californians should make it a
point to catch one of the Bill Lynch band gigs if you get a chance. These
guys are REALLY good. If you like your blues rock in a Stevie Ray Vaughan
style, then you'll like the band. Bill is really hot and Dave has to go and
tell me that some tracks he cut with Mr Stewart didn't make the final cut.
Aaaaagh. OK- whoever has a secret tape of these, let me know... We'll talk.

Anyway, the boys were really good and I haven't boogied so much in a long
time. I couldn't sit still- I was bouncing all over my seat. Several of the
songs they did are really outstanding. I think my favorite was a really
rockin' cover of a Son House song. They didn't say the name of the song, but
I'm pretty sure it is called "Dead Letter". Bill Lynch is exceptionally
talented and Dave rocked right with him. And Dennis banged away just great. I
thought John Hoke's rhythm guitar was buried a bit too deep in the mix to
appreciate - and there were some sound problems that didn't help it, but
nevertheless they were good and sounded good. Catch em if you get a chance.
This band is a 180 degree switch from their Stewart sound, but don't let that
scare ya.

The following is an (edited) extract from a piece in the British football
(soccer) magazine 'Four Four Two', June 1996:

"To celebrate Reid's heroics, 'Simply Red and White' - Sunderland fans and
wannabee popstars - have released their own version of the former Monkees
favourite. 'Daydream Believer (Cheer Up Peter Reid)' sold over 10,000 copies
in its first week of issue, outselling Oasis in Sunderland's music shops and
reaching number 41 in the UK charts. All royalties from the record, which
have already amounted to 4,500 Pounds Sterling are being donated to the
Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children at the request of Peter Reid."
                                 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Does John know about this? The money's obviously going to a good cause, but
I would have thought that it should be up to John Stewart to waive
royalties, rather than Peter Reid (who's Sunderland's mamager, BTW).

Hi folks (or should I say "folkies"), I'm DMotley (Doug) and I'm the one who
initially suggested barraging Austin City Limits with requests for JS to
appear on their show. I'm really pleased to see that so many of you are
participating in this effort! Keep up the good work!
This is my first posting on Bloodlines, although I have been a member for
about a month.
I would like to volunteer my place, in Crestline, Ca. for a house concert.
We are located in the San Bernardino Mtns. at 5,400 ft., with a lovely view
of the San Bernardino Valley (and the San Andreas Fault). My house is
surrounded by National Forest with few neighbors to bother, and plenty of
parking. This location would be covenient for folks coming from L.A. or
San Diego. Also, my son plays drums if they are needed.
I would be happy to approach John about this. Is anyone else interested?
Let me know! As always, "Keep it flyin' "

Laura, I would like to join the others in urging a John Stewart Austin
     City Limits appearance.

John certainly fits the show's style and feel perfectly. I think that
it would be a service to the viewers who have not had the pleasure of
     seeing or hearing John perform.

As I am sure you are aware, it is a mystery to many of us how John
remains a secret to so many. In some ways we enjoy having him to
ourselves, but at the same time think that if given the chance others
would appreciate "America's Greatest Singer/ Songwriter" as we do.

     My wish list would be:

     1. John Stewart
     2. John Stewart
     3. John Stewart
     4. Guy Clark
     5. Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock & Joe Ely

If you haven't already sent us your bio (however short it might have to be)
please consider submitting it soon. I know there are still a few of you out
there! If anyone would like a list of the introductions that have already
been posted, please send me a post and I'll get that out to you asap.

Also, is anyone interested in popping about $3 or so for a nicely designed
"bloodlines" button that will identify us to each other at concerts and the
like? I know that Nancinet offers just such a button and it has been a
great conversation starter and has also helped to bring others into the

I've been following John on and off since the mid-sixties when I saw him
with the Trio in Hawaii.

I kind of lost track of him until the Gold album got my attention.

I saw him on a somewhat regular basis in San Francisco at the Great
America Music Hall.

I now live in Denver (I get around), and recently saw John in Colorado
Springs. It is amazing that he keeps writing such good songs. I love the
Route 66 stuff.

I was recently in Albuquerque for the hot air balloon festival and
drove the length of Central Ave (old Rt 66)

>(If you love JS' music, I recommend Greg Brown's "The Poet
>Game", if you haven't already checked it out.)

I just have to concur with Peter's commet about Greg. Greg Brown has this
incredible deep bass voice (one of the few true basses I know of in the music
biz), and writes some of the most powerful and moving songs out there (along
with John, of course).

I've actually been thinking about making John a tape & sending it to him of
the lead off track on Brown's "The Poet Game." The song is called "Brand New
'64 Dodge," and in it Brown beautifully caputres and convey's one of John's
favorite motif's - how much things changed with Kennedy's assasination.

The lyrics are:

Money comes out of Dad's pocket,
Hankies come out of Mom's purse,
The engine hardly makes a sound,
Even when you put it in reverse.
It's got push-button transmission,
Hard top convertible 4 doors.
It's November of 1963m
And the brand new Dodge is a '64
The brand new Dodge.

And we're rolling slow down Main St.
The asphalt and the gravel crunch.
Chruch is finally over,
and we're gonna have our Sunday lunch.
And then I will play football
With my buddies down in the park
And dream about my girlfriend,
As I lie alone in the dark
As I lie alone

She has short red hair and blue eyes
And her swimsuit's also blue
And her little brother is retarded
But Jesus loves him too
And Jesus loves our president,
Even though he is a Catholic
That's an awful lot for a boy to think about
As he walk's along the railroad track
As he walk's along

And my sister won't get carsick
Cause we're only going half a mile
and the car still has that new car smell
And Dad looks like he might smile
And the world is big and full of autumn
And I'm hungry as can be
And we're in our brand new '64 Dodge,
November of 63.
November.

lyrics by Greg Brown.

I'm exciting about being on this list. Hope the above wan't way too long a
posting for eveybody. I can get kinda carried away about the music
sometimes.

Best,

Ian Shaw
